Hi Ross, I did respond to Vickie and have had one other request. I sent the book on zipdisk to our web manager so it could be put on the website but our list manager had to give up the list before it could be done. I'll check with rootsweb regarding the free web pages to see if I could possibly get it online with a link to the Lawrence County web site. I still have it on floppy and my son (this is why we have children) can help me with the html. That way it will be available to everyone online -- and although I do enjoy basking in praise, don't worry about copyright. This is public information. Dear Marilyn, Thanks so much for the mail and suggestion. When I first searched All of Missouri, I was unaware of all of my Anc.'s names. Wichita has a great genealogy library, and I think I will give it another try. My anc's were from Switzerland, and suspected anti-baptist, and exiled in 1710 to America. Name org. was Kauffman or Kaufmann. I know there are Hoffman lines from Germany, but will check it also because no one could spell back then, clerk wise. regards Carl ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Jerry, I am weeding out old messages and just about decided not to comment on your BRASHEARS, but decided that perhaps I should. I am not a BRASHEARS researcher, but a brother to my 3rd gr grandmother (Jane MASON JEFFERY), Daniel MASON, while stationed at South West Point in Roane County, TN in the latter part of the 1700's, married a Mary "Polly" BRASHEARS. Hay-Hay, Thanks Ross for answering with two e-mails about questions on search in Lawrence Co. Missouri. Your messages have been of great value to me. I wanted to comment on Deadrich as Andrew From Grainger, Tenn used, or a clerk put down, Deadrich Houfmann on a marriage Lin in Harrison Co. Texas. This is really far-a-field from Andrew David Coffman don't you think. I've been able to get thur this search by searching the women in his life instead of him, all except this missing 16 years and 1859 would be about in the middle of this missing time. I really thank you for the look-up also, and your advise. If you live in county seat, I'de surely like to meet you, but I suspect you live near St. Louis judging from your e-mail address. I still wish for search advise on data available in Lawrence Co. Warm regards Carl Coffman, from the wheat fields in Kansas ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Carl- I understand the Greene Co. Library has a copy of: " A HISTORY OF THE BAPTIST IN MISSOURI-By R.S. Duncan published in 1882 " I found a 'used, out of print' copy at one of the internet booksmiths but did not feel the price $108 was warranted. My ancestor was interviewed in 1871 for this publication so it may cover early history of the church and its ministers in Missouri. Good luck with your search, bill
Carl, First, he may not have changed his last name. Those differences may just reflect how whoever wrote it thought it was spelled. Or if you are using transcriptions of records it may just be how the transcriber read it. You may already realize that, but thought I would mention it just in case. The census takers usually did not ask people how to spell names. They usually wrote down what how they thought it was spelled. Courthouse clerks and ministers did the same. Many spelled phonetically or spelled it like a name they already knew. However, some people did intentionally change the spelling of their name or even unintentionally spelled it differently at different times because they were not well educated. I have examples of these among my own ancestors. And there are also many documented cases of people who were missed in every census. For example, I know of several Lawrence countians who were omitted in the 1850 Lawrence county census. So you may not find him because the census taker didn't find him. There are not as many records of this time period for Lawrence County as there are for later years. I did not find any mention of him in Judith Johnson Reustle's "A View from the Courthouse: Abstracts of Lawrence County, Mo., Circuit Court Documents, 1858-1869." But other unpublished court records might be worth checking. There are also land deed records for this time period, but he may not have been in Lawrence County long enough to buy land. The name does not appear in the published index to Goodspeed's 1888 History, but then many names do not appear there. I am in the process of trying to locate surviving records of Baptist churches in the county because many of my ancestors and relatives were Baptists. A photocopy of the records of Sycamore Baptist Church which was organized in 1856 are in the Ozarks Genealogical Society Library in Springfield, MO. I found some of my ancestors and relatives in them. You probably should check out that library and the Genealogy & Local History section at the Springfield - Greene County library while you are in the area. There are no known surviving copies of the newspapers published in Lawrence County in the late 1850s, but there are some for Springfield and other nearby towns which include mention of news and people from Lawrence County. There are published abstracts of these at the Springfield and/or OGS libraries. Incidentally, I have several ancestral lines, including Cameron, which came from Grainger County, Tenn. I, also, have the given name Deadrick in my family. My great grandmother Cameron's father was William Deadrick Lee, born 1822 in Hawkins Co., Tn, mar. 1841 in Grainger Co., and died 1889 in Grainger Co. That middle name has been carried down through my grandfather, an uncle, and a cousin. There was a Deaderick family in the area at the time, but I have not found any connection to it. Hope this helps. Ross Cameron >>> carl_coffman@hotmail.com 08/03 8:44 PM >>> Thanks guys, And Gayle, I didn't mead to mis-lead you, I meant hunt as in rabbit hunt. Dear list, I'm on a part of a hunt that about has me down. Here is what I know, he was married in 1849 was in the 1850 census in Polk co. Missouri under Mr and Mrs, no children, and with correct name. Found him married again under different name in Harrison Co. Texas in 1866. Found him in 1870 census for Fannin Co. Texas using A D. for Andrew David. The marriage in Harrison, as you can see is his 2nd. and which out coffman family springs from. The missing 16 years are my concern to see if there is more family. With in the last 2-weeks I got a lead from his mother's estate statement that this anc. was in Lawernce Co. Missouri 2/12/1859. I checked ever entry (took hours) in the 1860 census, on places and dates that were used in case he was using a different name's. I found 4 that could of been close in Dates and places, but very far-a-field, in a like a made up name. The only thing I know to do now is drive over there and turn over all bricks, from 1850-1859. List if you were me, what all types of records could you expect to find on everything in between census in a small co. in Missouri, listing people and names on every thing, Court house and Beyond??? Sure wish it was a straight-forward search and he wasn't running for his life, from a private war in Polk Co. I don't want to miss a bet and I'm asking about things like reg. to vote, property taxes, and etc. I wish you to know I am serious and will try out all your ideas, and I also wish To thank you for your ideas.
