Hi newly-found 5th Cousin Buddy, Glad to have all this information on my Boyd cousins. This is yet another connection to the 12 Families for me that I had not previously noted. I have Eliza's marriage to Wormington in my Boyd records, but I haven't done any work on the Boyd line in a few years. I, too, am a great, great, great, great grandson of Josiah and Jane (Fullerton) Boyd. Their daughter Isabella married Claiborn Osborn. According to Claiborn Osborn's biographical sketch in the 1883 History of Jasper County, Missouri, pp. 915-916: He "Was of Union principles during the war of the Rebellion and suffered severe loss of property in consequence; in fact everything but his land. In 1863 he moved to Lawrence county for protection, where he remained three years. He was quite a speculative man and owned farms in different parts of the county. He moved into Sarcoxie in 1866, . . ." It was during those three years in Lawrence County, that their daughter, Martha Ann "Mattie" married Gallahugh Blackburn Moore of Lawrence County, on 21 December 1864. Her parents moved back to Jasper County after the War, but the Moores remained in Lawrence County. That is how I got my Jasper County ancestors -- Osborn, Boyd, and Fullerton. Here is a very brief outline of our relationship chart: Josiah Boyd and Jane Fullerton -- common progenitors Isabella Love Boyd Osborn -- sisters -- Eliza Emaline Boyd Wormington Martha Ann Osborn Moore -- 1st cous. -- John Benton Wormington Mary Belle Moore Patton -- 2nd cous. -- Henry Price Wormington Earl Henderson Patton -- 3rd cous. -- Chester Henry Wormington Bonnie Ruth Patton Cameron -- 4th cous. -- Dortha Florence W. Fesmire Ross J Cameron -- 5th cous. -- Roland Dee Fesmire I had planned to get over to Sarcoxie to photograph and videotape the tombstones of the Osborns and Boyds while in Missouri earlier this year, but I didn't have time -- hopefully next year. Have you done any research on our Boyd and Fullerton ancestry? I have some data published by others, some of which is unfortunately erroneous. By the way, in reading through your material, I noticed in the data on Henry Price Wormington, No. 4, you have his death in Minco, Grady Co., Missouri, which should be Oklahoma instead of Missouri. Ross Cameron >>> rfesmire@pacbell.net 08/11 3:15 AM >>> To whom it may concern: I have gotten a lot of good information from the recent postings on the Wormington and 12 Pioneer Families. Janet, We may have communicated about this line (GAY) before, but my brain is on meltdown! One of my maternal ancestors Rhoda GAY Spivey was living in Polk Co. almost on the Dade Co. line in the 1850's-60's. I don't know if there were any of her Gay relatives there or not, but they and the Spiveys lived near each other in VA and NC. I'd be interested, too, in learning who this Green Gay was. For the HASSELL searchers, I submitted a bible record to the Sumner Co TN Web site which is posted under the name of GRAY-HARRIS. You might want to take a look as this bible record which shows Nancy Ann HASSELL Wormington's brother and his family. This brother was Abraham HASSELL and his family included two grandsons who moved to Lawrence Co MO. They appear in the 1850 Lawrence Co MO census. The two were Robert McGee KING and William Jennett David KING. They were sons of William McGee KING & Priscilla HASSELL. Imogene Bennett Springfield, MO ibennett@mail.orion.org

To Dade & Lawrence Co Researchers, I was doing some research on my Gay family recently (Wm Washington Gay, DeKalb Co TN>Lawrence Co MO 1850s, with Whaley folks) and I made another stab at trying to figure out who the Green GAY in the 1850 Dade Co census was. Well, I found one of his descendants at genforum (www.genforum.com/gay -- try the site for all your surnames!). He sent me some descendant information (see names of allied families at the end), which included the following interesting letter in the closing days of the Civil War from a group of Dade Co citizens requesting assistance from murderers, pillagers and plunderers (I hope not rape). I don't recognize any of these folks here, but I thought it was intriguing from a history point of view as well. Those of you just with Lawrence Co interest may question some of their claims? I am no judge. Kaye, you may want this on the Dade website??? I am curious if anyone knows what happened next? Was any of this a part of the burning of Dadeville in 1864, for which one of my ggg uncles, Nicholas Houston Choate was tried for murder, and the Choate/Byrd and other families became divided over? Did the Dade citizens get protection? Did a substantial portion of the citizens move? Were conditions different in Lawrence Co? My best, Janet Hunter Here is the letter and reference: "The source of this letter is ; Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Series I, Volume 48, Part 1, pages 949-950; It will become part of Green Gay's biography; Second the letter is the basis for the research done in an effort to locate Green through the migration pattern of these friends; The letter is as follows; Greenfield, Dade County, Mo., February 22, 1865. To Brig. Gen. J.B. Sanborn, Commanding Southwest District, Springfield, Mo.: The undersigned citizens of Dade County would most respectifully ask leave to represent briefly the condition of affairs in this part of the military district under your command. >From the outbreak of the rebellion a very considerable portion of the citizens of Dade County manifested a determination to stand by the Federal Government in sustaining the laws and in the suppression of the rebellion. This is made manifest from the fact that no other county in the state has furnished more soldiers for the Federal Army in proportion to the population than Dade. The few remaining citizens, after filling up the ranks of the Union Army, have struggled with a zeal worthy the cause of the Union, and while we look with pride upon their noble and patriotic devotion, we turn with deep mortification to the fact that many of them have been inhumanly murdered and their wives and children robbed of their little all. Yet, in the midst of these repeated outrages, our Union citizens have still continued in their devotion to the cause of the Union. They have borne with comparitive silence what they considered seeming neglect on the part of the Government in the management of the military affairs of the country. Last spring we hailed with delight a communication emanating from Capt. R.B. Owen, exhorting the farmers to repair to their homes and cultivate their farms, assuring them that they should be protected. Many had made their arrangements to leave the country , but at the earnest persuasions of many of us, in view of the protection thus promised, were induced to remain, and the result shows that many of them were shot at the plow handle and others robbed of their little all. The amount of military that we received under that promise was one skeleton company of state militia and a few of the enrolled were all that we had to protect the country and till the soil. But even after the bloody ordeal through which we passed last year we still had hopes that this spring would open up more propitiously for us. We had made more vigorous preparations to cultivate the soil; More grain was sown last fall than at any time since the war commenced (in proporation to the population). Confidence in the ability and willingness of the military to give us all the protection that was necessary was manifesting itself among the people, but owing to the appearance of guerilla bands in the country a panic has siezed upon the people. Within the past ten days several of our citizens have been robbed of their horses, bedclothing, wearing apparel and money. The consequences are that whole neighborhoods are preparing to leave the country, and unless some steps are speedily taken to arrest it there will be a general stampede and nothing will be left to protect but the military posts, and it is very evident that unless the farming interest is protected there is but little use for a military post. We would not be understood as reflecting in the least upon the command stationed at this post, but, on the contrary, would take the occasion to say that we have a good command, composed of officers and men who feel a deep interest in protecting the country and its interests. But one company is not sufficent to protect the post and the country, too. Our settled conviction is that it will require at least one full company to constantly patrol the country or the people cannot stay at home, much less till the soil. We should have infantry to guard the post and mounted men to protect the settlements. Now, general, there is nothing here said that is drawn from the imagination. It is no idle visionary of the brain, but the records of the country will bear testimony, and our sole object is to lay the facts before you and through you to ask of those having the authority to render us that aid which we think we are justly entitled to. With sentiments of high regard, we are, general, your friends. D.B. RIVES, ---- BENJ. APPLEBY, --- GREEN GAY, --- RICHMON MITHELL, --- WM. P. GRIGGS, --- NELSON McDOWELL, --- J.D. MONTGOMERY, --- W.K. LATHIM, --- BENJAMIN RAGSDALE, --- C.C. MALLACOAT, --- A.M. CLEMONE, --- JOHN BROWN, --- D.J. McMILLEN, --- PHARAOH COOK." Green GAY died 1876 is buried in Daughtery Cemetery, Dade Co. His wife was Elizabeth STOUT. Descendants in Dade Co married into these families: LEWIS, GROSS, HOLMAN, HARRIS, PUTNAM, BEACH. ...in the 1860s, 1870s. In the late 1800s most descendants were in Barton and Jasper Co MO/ Many eventually ended up in California, the promised land. Janet Hunter, formerly of Long Beach CA
Hi Marilyn, am interested in the portion of your information on Elizabeth Mills who married Stephen Wiles 1849. I have recently been looking for Evelyn Millis or Mills who married Stephen Wiles 2-22-1849 in Lincoln Co., Tenn. I had them as parents of Ross King Wiles 2-4-1862 Mo married Malinda Evyline Williams. It appears this is the same person so I may have the name wrong. I had just posted to mochrist because I show Stephen Wiles died there 1-9-1909 but I didn't know they were in Lawrence Co. too. Would appreciate anything additional you might have. Thanks, Kaye Smith
I actually know very little on my Mills line. My gr=gr grandmother was Margaret Adeline Mills who married Wilburn Hunter Waid Jan 31, 1849 in Lincoln co Tn. Her father was James Mills mother unknown. James will was probated in 1847 in Lincoln Co Tn and there are several entryies in Marsh's Wills & Inventories of Lincoln Co Tn. He was Married to Elenor Wilds Jan 1842 in Lincoln Co and she survived him. The children all appear to be by a previous wife. His daughters were Sarfah who married 1840 Peter Cunningham' Eliza who married 1841 John Ashby, Nancy who married Joshua Stroud 1839, Elizabeth who married Stephen Wiles 1849 and a son James who married 1852 Sarah Waid/Wade. In earlier entrys in the Will and Inventories he was guardian to some Marsh children whose guardian after his death was a member of Rees family. In 1820 Lincoln Co Tn there was an Ellis Mills, James, John Mills and Nancy Mills.. In 1830 there was a Ellis, WEstley and James Mills. In 1840 there is only Westley and James in Lincoln Co. I see in 1830 that the Neece and MCnatt family's are listed on the same census page. I would appreciate any information on the Mills family . I am printing your query. I will keep you group in mind. Ross: Please ignore the message I just sent you. I gave you some misinformation. I got interupted in the middle - in fact three times - and starting and stopping just didn't work. I mixed the families up. I will send the correct information later. Connie
That is what we want to know..Apparently the locals were having trouble with the railroad and the Guard was sent for control. The story my grandfather told later became confused with another maneuver.I have newspaper copies of the other incident and am trying to find the story behind this incident.Could anyone tell me where to write for Missouri National Guard records?
What was the reason they wouldn't let the guard off? Pat
I would try both the State Archives in Jefferson City and the State Historical Library in Columbia. I think you can find email addresses for both online. Marilyn: I noted you are researching Mills. Where are they from? I have two lines of Mills to research. One is a possible--my ancestor, Mills Eason. His father was Joseph Eason and mother was Susanna. Because he was given a names unusual for this family we are wondering if it could have been his mother's maiden name. They were in Rowan and Stokes Cos., NC. The other Mills family was in the Cedar Co., MO area. Michelle: How wonderful!!! I went through the 1880 census again yesterday because someone said they found a Mrs. Mahaffey in the 1879 Township Book owning land. I could find all the neighbors she mentioned but even tho I would like to have found this woman, at least I know I did a good job of reading the census the first time <VBG> Do you know when the Mahaffey family arrived in Missouri? And, did they go directly to Lawrence County? Here's an interesting point, aside from the family, although I subscribe to several lists, especially in the geographic areas I have families in, I rarely post queries. One day at the FHC one of the librarians was telling me what wonderful help she has received from the RootsWeb Lists. I said that when I first subscribed to one or two, I posted initial queries and got no responses, so I hadn't bothered to post any more. Then, when I got to this point with these families - and needing some clues to point me in a more direct direction, that was when I decided to post. What a wonderful experience this has been. I am going to be in Salt Lake City for the conference in September. Then I will be back at the end of September and will have a few days to go to the Family History Library. Because I will be working on these families and looking at anything and everything they have on Lawrence Co., if I can do some lookups for folks while I am there, please let me know. I need to make restitution for all the wonderful help I received here. Connie
Thanks very much, Judy! Great site for getting late-breaking hometown news for those of us 1,000 miles away. I'll ask about getting the LC Record online which I get about 10 days after it comes out. Ross Cameron >>> judy@netfocus.net 08/10 7:02 PM >>> Thought I'd give you a link for local news, including death notices and obits. http://www.msnbc.com/local/KYTV/63829.asp You'll get a list of Southwest Missouri newspapers online; select one and browse. Monett, Bolivar, Marshfield, Joplin, Springfield and others are online. Some have only death notices; others print obits. If that link doesn't work for you go to http://www.netfocus.net Enter Find KY3 TV on the drop down menu under the heading Local News and weather; then click Go There. Click on "news" on the left side panel; then click on local news. At the bottom of the page is a heading "Hometown News." Click there to get to the newspaper index. Judy
