    3. Thanks Cameron, I appreciate you help. Sorry I didnt get the first response. MY gr gr grandfather was John McGehee sometimes spelled McGehe. He was indicted for murder in Lawrence county Mo in 1857 I think, the papers are not in front of me. He requested a change of venue becuase he stated he didnt figure he could get a fair trial in Lawrence county, so the venue was changed to Jasper county, but jasper county has no record of anything and thats where the trail goes cold. His belongings were sold in a probate sale in April of 1858 (I think htats the right month) and he was listed as a "non" resident of Missouri. So i dont know what happened to the guy. His son Marion may have shown up in California so I questioned whether or not he went there. One clue indicated he might have gone to Texas but again, no proof of this. I did find a John McGehee marrying a Polly Elder in the 1860s in the same place that all John's kids were living but I have no indication that it was him and he would have been in his mid to late 50s at teh time. Anyway, any help would be appreciated from any one. Thanks again Cameron. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Monett's location
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Hi Virginia, There are two answers to your question about Monett being in Lawrence County. In 1921, no part of the city of Monett was in Lawrence County. It was not until 1934 that the community of Forest Park in Lawrence County was annexed to Monett. So it was not until 1934 that any part of the city of Monett was in Lawrence County. If you are interested in this story see more on this story below. However, there were people who lived in Lawrence County whose post office address would have been Monett because their mail was delivered from the Monett post office. In fact, there might even be a marriage record that says, Monett, Lawrence Co., even in 1921, because the person was to list the post office address and the county of their residence. Because new post offices were being opened and old post offices being closed, it is even possible that someone living in Lawrence County might have lived in the same house and been served at different times by post offices in two or even three different counties even though they never moved. For example: Clarkson P. O. (Lawrence Co.) closed in 1903 and mail delivery was moved to Wentworth (Newton Co.) [Heath P. O. (Lawrence Co.) closed in 1902 and moved to Clarkson in 1902, which was moved to Wentworth (Newton Co.) in 1903. Lawrenceburg P. O. (Lawrence Co., named changed from Dunkle's Store Post Office in 1876) closed in 1914, and mail delivery was moved to Everton (Dade Co.) Olinger P. O., (Lawrence Co.) closed in 1917 and mail delivery moved to South Greenfield (Dade Co.) Round Grove P. O. (Lawrence Co.) closed in 1907 and mail delivery moved to Lockwood (Dade Co.) Yingst P. O. (Lawrence Co.) closed in 1895 and mail delivery moved to Turnback (Dade Co.) This sort of thing happens all around Lawrence County and throughout the nation because post office delivery boundaries never have necessarily followed county boundaries. Here is a list of a few examples of this. Post Offices in Lawrence County which served residents in other counties: Pierce/Peirce City P. O. served residents of Barry Co. and Newton Co. Aurora P. O. served residents of Barry Co. Marionville P. O. served residents of Christian Co. and Stone Co. Logan P. O. served residents of Christiian Co. Halltown P. O. served residents of Greene Co. Bower's/Bowers' Mill/Mills P. O. served residents of Jasper Co. Post offices in other counties served residents of Lawrence County: Monett P. O. (Barry Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Billings P. O. (Christian Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Ash Grove P. O. (Greene Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Everton P. O. (Dade Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Turnback P. O. (Dade Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. South Greenfield P. O. (Dade Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Lockwood P. O. (Dade Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Wentworth P. O. (Newton Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. Sarcoxie P. O. (Jasper Co.) served residents of Lawrence Co. And there are probably others than those named above. These situartions still exist today. From 1988-1997, my post office address was Alexandria, VA, which is an independent city, but I lived in Fairfax County, VA. Alexandria is not part of Fairfax County. There are in fact several different ZIP codes served by the Alexandria Post Office which are completely located within Fairfax County. Here is a response I gave to the list on this same question about three years ago: "The present Monett is in both counties. As has been stated in another email, the middle of Cleveland Avenue is the county line. What is north of Cleveland Avenue is in Lawrence county and what is south is in Barry county. The city limits of Monett were confined to Barry County until 1934 when the Lawrence County community of Forest Park was annexed to Monett. The information that follows comes from the 1974 Lawrence County History, pages 146-147, in an article written by Glennon Bass on the Lawrence County town of Forest Park. On June 20, 1934, the Monett city council consisting of . . . passed a resolution to put before the votes of Monett and Forest Park the annexation of Forest Park. On August 7, 1934, the city council accepted the vote of the people for annexation. Mr. Bass tells the story of Barry county wanting to pave Cleveland Avenue and having to wait for the Lawrence county people in Forest Park to approve paving the northern half of the street before the project could begin. He also states that the Forest Park School District was annexed to the Monett School District in 1906. Incidentally, he also states that "Records show that people were living in the area of Forest Park in the late 1840's, when Monett was known as Billings." I know that the present Billings is east of Lawrence county in Christian county. I don't know what records Mr. Bass used for his article. The other important thing to keep in mind is that people who did not live in a community or town or city, sometimes received or still receive mail through the post office of the nearby community or city. The post office does not draw its boundaries along county lines, so often times people living in one county would get their mail through a post office in another county. So people living north of Monett very likely would have received their mail through the Monett post office. This confusion is sometimes documented in official records where someone notes or explains that they live on property in one county but receive their mail through a post office located in another county." Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 03/16/03 07:21PM >>> I recently did a marriage look-up for someone from 1921 and now have a question I can't answer. Was Monett partially in Barry Co. and partially in Lawrence Co.? The marriage record seems to indicate so unless the info for one of the parties was in error. Thanks for any help. 3. Virginia, yes, to the best of my knowledge, Monett has long been divided by the Lawrence, Barry County line. It still is, if I am not mistaken. If you have a map, I believe (I could be wrong) it still divides on Cleveland Avenue. North is Lawrence County and South of that is all Barry County. Yes, it is very confusing. 1. [MOLAWREN-L] Lawrence Co. MO Marriage or Death FOWLER 1865-1877
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: FOWLER, HEATH, LEWIS, MEEK, GRAY Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5MB.2ACI/2158 Message Board Post: John C. Fowler & Olivia Heath Fowler had the following children and I would like to locate some of them on the census, or the marriage or death of some of them. John & Olivia were in Newton Co., Granby Twp. MO 1870 near the Lawrence Co. MO border. 1. Ellen Fowler b. @1843 MO married Cornelius Lewis 1861 in Collin Co. TX. I never located them after that. He may have died in the Civil War and she may have remarried, or maybe she died in childbirth? I would like to find out what happened to them. 2. D. William Fowler b. @1845 MO was last with his parents in Collin Co. TX 1860 Census. I never located him on the 1870 Census and I don't find him again until just before he married my Gr. Grandma in AR but he was 33 at that time so I think he was probably married before, I would really like to locate him and if he married before I would like to know who, when and where? 3. Isabella Fowler b. @1850 MO. I last locate her in Collin Co. TX with her parents. Did she marry? Did she die? I hope someone can help me find out. 4. Mary "Mollie" Ann Fowler b. 1855 McKinney, TX m. Robert Meek (date and place unknown) and they had a son, William Francis Meek @1874 and then Robert Meek died or disappeared. I would like to locate their marriage and possible divorce or his death. 5. Olivia Fowler b. @1862 Dallas, TX I know what became of her, she married Francis Matchett in Searcy Co. AR and raised a family and is buried there. Part of what makes this family hard to track is they moved so often, they also played fast and loose with date & place of birth, often varying their ages a few years and often giving the last place they lived as where they were "from." But they seemed to travel together for the most part, the parents and son & two youngest girls were all in Searcy Co. AR in the very late 1870's and early 1800's. The oldest two girls may have been but I don't know their last names if they were? Any help or advice would really be appreciated. Thank you. Charlene

Surnames: Stephens, Campbell, Fenton, Reynolds Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5MB.2ACI/2133.1 Message Board Post: I did not find a tombstone inscription nor an obituary nor death notice for Thomas Stephens in published records. However, I did find a reference to his probate file. Index to Probate Files, Lawrence County, Missouri, 1845-1908, p. 9: Stephens, Thomas, Box 42, File 970. Based on the number of his probate file, #970, I would estimate that he died in Dec. 1888, based on probate files before and after his number. The issues of the Lawrence County Chieftain for Dec. 1888 are missing. You should write the Office of the Clerk of the Probate Clerk, Lawrence County Courthouse, Mount Vernon, MO 65712, and request a copy of his probate file. It should give you his date of death and all heirs and their places of residence. I did find his wife's burial place and one of their daughters and sons in law.
