Does anyone know of a RODGERS connection to VERMILLION? My grandfather's youngest sister, Rosa VERMILLION, married Fred RODGERS in August of 1895 in Lawrence Co., MO. Sometime subsequently they moved to the Boise, ID area. I did find their graves last summer in ID, but I'm curious to find out if the RODGERS being discussed is connected to Fred Rodgers. Rosa VERMILLION was the daughter of Zachariah and Mary Catharine Burton Parker VERMILLION. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks. Donna, Sylvia Rodgers was Inez Rodgers Bullard's mother. Sylvia's husband was John Rodgers. When Sylvia sold/closed the restaurant she bought a trailer and parked it close to where the barber shop, beauty shop and telephone office was. Halltown is just a blip on the road. Little bitty place. Mom doesn't remember Ralph. Sylvia and John had a son named John and a daughter Inez (maybe more). Harl (spl?) Bullard was Inez' husband; they had a son who committed suicide. The only other child my mother is aware of is Harlette who was married and gone when her brother killed himself. Her brother had one son. That's all we can come up with at the moment. There are names posted on the Rock Prairie Cemetery chapel door for contacts. If you want to email me privately I'll give you a couple of them and the phone numbers that go along with them. Hi Pat, me again. Re - your message mentioning Mason. My Mom was best friends with Chloe Rogers Mason married to Deward Mason. As I told you my Moms family owned the Halltown Cafe and Chloe grew up next door. Any connection to your Masons? Kaye
I've just joined your list and have read the postings on Halltown. I have recently found out that Sylvia Bond-Rodgers is my aunt and that she's suppose to be buried there in Halltown. Anyone with any information on her and would be willing to share it with me would be much appreciated. Her parents were C.Thomas and Victoria Bond, one of her brother's Ralph is my father. I had a DNA testing done to verify it. I am 48 years young and would appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thank you in advance. Donna
My Grandmother's half brother is Fred Underwood. His father is Finley Underwood. Does this match with your Underwood's? Kathy

Hello Everyone, I am in sunny Southern California for a few months. I have been busy, but have had time to read some of the recent emails, and have a couple of comments. Also at the end I insert the obituary for Helen (Brewer) Marshall, who passed away a little over a week ago here in Long Beach. I was in Dade & Lawrence County for one day three weeks ago. I had time for a quick run for documents at the Dade and Lawrence Co courthouses before visiting an aunt in a nursing home. I spent some time at the Dade County library, and among the things I was looking for were obituaries for my Bird and Marsh family, the earliest generations (already had death dates). To do this I went through microfilms for two or three papers 1890s, 1900s, 1910s, 1920s. These were obits I didn't find in the excellent files kept by the genealogy society. I have these observations: First, I found several obituaries in the microfilms, so if any of you visit Dade Co., and can't find the obituary in the family files, the microfilms are right there handy. I found probably ten of interest in only 30 minutes. Second, and this relates to the California migration, in the Greenfield Vedette at one point in the 1920s I think they had a "neighborhood" report, right along with Everton, South Greenfield, Lockwood....for the San Joaquin Valley in California! Third, one obituary I wasn't looking for, for an allied Draughon line, didn't appear until about three months after the death. This would have been in the 1910s...so keep this in mind if you don't find something in the first couple of weeks after the death. Finally, my cousin Bertha Helen Marshall passed away as I mentioned. Her obituary from the Long Beach Press-Telegram follows. The obituary says she was born in Greenfield, but there is general agreement that she was born south of So. Greenfield near the Lawrence Co. border, probably 1/2 mile from WW (my mother remembers where they lived). Helen was the daughter of Lenia Fortner and Roy Brewer. son of William Brewer and Emma, with half siblings Tim and Oda. Lenia was the daughter of Bert Fortner and Bertha Marsh (sister of my grandmother Lucy Marsh Sexton). They were the children of Jacob T. Fortner and Sarah Haney (who lived in Lawrence County) , and William Michael Marsh and Casselia Bird. Lucy Marsh Sexton's husband Charley Sexton, was the grandson of Elizabeth Fortner Marshall, aunt of Jacob Fortner....oh well, you all get the picture...Cousins all around. Incidentally, I have found tons of old pictures of my mother's from 1920s, 1930s, especially all her Miller High School pictures, such as the extremely poorly padded football team in the 1930s, etc.. We are slowly going through and identifying the people. My best regards, Janet Hunter MARSHALL, Helen B., also known as "GrandMa", was a resident of Long Beach, CA for nearly 75 years. Helen died at her home on March 24, 2003 at the age of 82, due to complications from pneumonia. She was b orn in Greenfield, Missouri on December 10, 1920, the oldest of five siblings (the Brewers) and leaves three survivng sisters; Joyce Carter, Bonnie Sparr, and Betty (and Dewight) Williamson. She attended a one room School House in Missouri before relocating with her family to Long Beach at the age of eight. She attended Long Beach Wilson High School prior to her marriage to her husband, Jim Marshall, for 59 years when he died in January, 2000. She is survived by her loving daughter and family, also of Long Beach; Vicki Lynn Kennedy, her husband/ [Robert] Helen's "Son"-in-Law and her cherished grandson, Ryan Marshall Kennedy, now twenty years old. In Georgia, she leaves behind two great grandchildren and their parents, Joseph & pregnant Kimberly Kennedy. Helen loved to play Bingo every Wednesday with her favorite niece, Pam Marshall, & with her daughter, Vicki. Lotto scratchers or tickets, penny-ante card games and quarterly trips to Laughlin tickled her funny bone. She wore her earrings, necklace and lape l pin every day and said, leave your angels behind". She relished in the delightful smiles and glees of all little children. (She also thought of middle aged adults as .) Most days she would bring a smile to anyone wanting one (and even if they didn't.) She fought a lot of health battles in her 82 years and was truly a walking miracle. Thus her love of angels. God Bless her. She had a good heart and will be sorely missed. Grave side services will be held at One O'Clock on Saturday, March 29 2003, Forest Lawn Mortuary, 1500 E. San Antonio Drive, Long Beach, just to the south of the Memorial Chapel, Forest Lawn, Long Beach. An informal gathering will follow at the Marshall residence after the service. Donations to the American Cancer Society, 936 Pine Ave., LB may be made in lieu of flowersm if you wish. Published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram on 3/28/2003.

Hello Sharon: May I suggest you put a notice that you are willing to share copies of your photos and are soliciting identification info about others in the online newsletter, Somebody's Links? http://www.petuniapress.com/ They produce two free online newsletters providing this service. The other one is entitled Missing Links, same URL. The two newsletters come out in alternating weeks. These newsletters have put many people in touch with descendants who no longer live in the original area of the photos, bibles, letters, etc. and have pointed the way for a lot of people to retrieve family treasures that have been discovered in antique stores, ebay, or even goodwill and then posted there. Kenneth Goodman, 96, of Halltown passed away on Saturday afternoon in Mount Vernon Place Health Care Center, Mount Vernon, Mo., following a short illness. Kenneth was born in Halltown and grew up in the Halltown area. He lived in California for a few years and moved back to Halltown and was a lifelong area resident. He owned and operated Goodman Garage and Service Station in Halltown and Interstate 44 for 45 years. He was a member of the Halltown Baptist Church. Kenneth and Cleo West were united in marriage on Jan. 14, 1939. To this union two sons were born. Together they were privileged to share over 58 years. Cleo preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 1997 Also preceding him was a grandson, Darin Goodman on Sept 26, 1994; two brothers, Elgin and Walter Goodman; and two sisters, Jewell Dickens and Gladys Scott. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Denny and Judi Goodman of Halltown, and Joe and Debra Goodman of Springfield; three grandchildren, Daryl Goodman, denise Perry and Tara Goodman; two step-grand-sons, Robert and Jeff Gilbert; and four great-grandchildren Derrick and Danielle Goodman and Kristen and Kaitlyn Perry. Services will be at 2 p.m. tuesday, July 3, 2001, in Halltown Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Conway officiating. Interment will follow in Yeakley Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Wilson Brim-Daniel Funeral Home, Ash Grove. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today in the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
This is funny. It appears that a lot of the people on the board have lived in California. I live in Texas now, but my brother lives in California. The call of the west called loudly to those from Halltown. Sharon, Kenneth Goodman from Halltown died about a year or so, maybe two and I think I have his obituary. I'll see if I can find it for you. Jackie, The location of L.Byron Stewart and Alice McCoy's wedding was Lawrenceburgh too. Their's was Dec. 16, 1900. Wedding performed by Rev. Harvey. Witnesses were Mr. Celia Wilkerson and Carry Woody. I think I'd better check the spelling on that "Mr." Celia Wilkerson. My father was good friends with some Wilkersons from Aurora...gotta check on the relationship with this Wilkerson. Ford sounds familiar. Pat & all, I've been enjoying the discussions reg. 'harvest time' and would love to be included in discussions of 'old' or 'pioneer' families in Lawrence County. Halltown is just one of the particular areas where my ancestors lived. Like so many of the Lawrence Co. researchers on the list, I figure I must be related to many, if not by blood at least by marriage. My ancestors lived in Barry, Lawrence, Dade, Polk, and Greene, often moving back and forth between the counties. My 2nd great grandfather, Thomas NICKEL migrated from Ohio to the area in the late 1830s...living first in and marrying [Jane Hall] in Barry County in 1838. By the time of the 1840 census, he was still in Barry Co., as were his parents, Samuel & Charlotte Nickel, and brothers Samuel, Jr. and family, and James Nickel & family. Land records in the 1840s put Thomas Nickel and his father & brother Samuel, Jr. in Dade & Lawrence Co. Sister & brother-in-law Robert W & Sarah BOLIN and family migrated from Ohio to Dade in the mid to late 1840s. Because of changes in the county boundries, Thomas appeared to move back and forth between Lawrence & Dade, even though he never moved. His farm was near Halltown, where he died in 1898. He, his wife and some of his adult children are buried in Wann Cemetery. My gr grandfather, John Nickel, grandfather Josephus Nickel, and mother Helen Nickel were all born in Lawrence County. John Nickel married Laura Ann Garringer in 1864 in Lawrence Co., while on leave from serving in the 16th MO Cav. during the Civil War. John and Laura are buried in Ash Grove Cemetery. To my knowledge, the Nickel surname for my family no longer exists in the Lawrence, Dade, Greene, etc. areas. Some of my mother's gradeschool years were spent in Mt. Vernon, but during the mid 1920s, the family moved to Springfield, where she graduated from high school, and married the following year. My grandmother died in Springfield, but is buried in the IOOF cemetery at Mt. Vernon, where her parents, and first child, who died at the age of 6, are buried. Many of my collateral lines, Nickel descendants, are still living in the area: GARTON, BLACKBURN, MASON, CALLISON, DOWNING, BOX, GRAVES, DAMERON. My 2nd grandparents, Andrew & Hannah (CARMAN) GARRINGER, from North Carolina, were also early settlers in the area. They are buried in Misemer Cemetery. Many descendants of the GARRINGER/GARNER, KIMMONS/CUMMINS, and WEST lines still live in the area. My gr grandfather, Edwin M. Goodman was sheriff of Lawrence Co. from 1904-1908, and his son-in-law, my grandfather, Joe Nickel, was a 'jailer' in Mt. Vernon. I don't know when, but I would guess that it was when Edwin Goodman was sheriff. Ed and his wife America [Chumbley] are buried in the IOOF cemetery. Like many or most on this list, I have relatives in many of the cemeteries in the area. Two years ago I was very fortunate to be able to stop in Mt. Vernon for a couple of days on my way to and from the FGS Conference in Davenport, IA. It was a very exciting trip and full of many 'firsts' for me. It was the first time I was able to research at the library and courthouse in Mt. Vernon, the library in Springfield, visit 3 local cemeteries, attend the monthly meeting of the Lawrence County Historical Society, of which I've been a member since the 1980s, and best of all the first time to meet and visit with my cousins, Lem and Sue Compton. I am very, very interested in the history of Lawrence and the surrounding counties, and am never bored when members of the list take the time to post all the wonderful information regarding the history of the area. Most often, these are stories that do not appear in the history books for Lawrence, but are an important part of the 'social' history of the area. Please keep the stories coming, and please include me. I would love to correspond/share my information with my cousins. Also, among the few family photos that I have, are a number of individual photos of school children...the little photos that we would trade among our friends, but unfortunately, the photos are not identified, nor do I know if they were of children from the Mt. Vernon area or the Springfield area. Also, I have 2 photos of 2 different school classes, taken outside of the school building, but again, I do not know if this is Mt. Vernon or Springfield. Guessing from the approximate age of my mother in the photo, I believe that they may have been taken in Mt. Vernon. I have a photo of Ruth Hight [her mother Eva was a close friend and school mate of my grandmother Emma (Goodman) Nickel and her sister, Cora (Goodman) Goodman], and there are a couple of pictures of neighbor children with my mother, and one of which is Max Whaley. I also have a photo of my grandmother & Mrs. Whaley together. I would love to find descendants of the photos so that I could share them with them. Since I cannot send attachments to the 'list', anyone who is interested in helping me to identify and find homes for the photos, or just interested in seeing the photos, please send me your e-mail address and I will scan them to you. I apologize for the length of this message. Hi Jackie, My stepfather was Earl K. FORD, born in Aurora. I don't know if any of the family lived in Halltown. His father was Patrick Henry FORD and may have been born in AR., his mother was Mary Keesee and she was born in Protem. Don't know if we have relatives. Barbara Marsh Pollock Pines, CA ********* One of my GINN family, Orlando, married Bertha FORD, born Halltown. Bertha was daughter of James Boy FORD and Julia Ann RENNAKER. Any relatives out there?
Dina, I also have Gibson ancestors in Aurora, Mt. Vernon and other parts of Lawrence Co. Who are your Gibsons? Pat, Judy Johnson Reustle is the coordinator for this MOLAWREN discussion list, the Ancestry/Rootsweb Lawrence County Message Board whose postings are automatically sent to this list, and the Lawrence County Rootsweb webpage at http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/index.htm There are many different categories of files available online at the Lawrence County Rootsweb webpage above, but not one specifically designated for Bible records at this time. However, I am sure that Judy would be willing to add that when she is able to get to it. As many subscribers know, she suffered a devasting property fire last summer. She is back online but still recovering. In the meantime you can include the Bible records in a message posted to this MOLAWREN list. It will be saved in the MOLAWREN archives as are all messages. You can also post it to the Ancestry/Rootsweb Lawrence County, Missouri, Message Board. I would suggest that you also send a paper photocopy and transcription copy to: Lawrence County Historical Society P. O. Box 406 Mount Vernon, Missouri 65712 The Society published a volume of Familly Bible Records (from more than 80 family Bibles) a few years ago. When enough more are received, then they would probably publish another volume or publish a second edition of the first one with new records added. In the meantime, they will publish Bible records in the quarterly Bulletin. Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 04/03/03 07:39AM >>> Saralie, The only other Bible records I've posted is to a invitation only family site from a different side of the family. Where is a good place to post Bible transcriptions...I haven't done this before? Pat Miller Mike Northam wrote: >Hi Pat: I'm always interested in seeing bible records.
