Pat, When you are in Halltown later this year check the Farm Road numbers and then it can easily be located on a map. It is surprising to me that the address south of Halltown would have been Bois D'Arc. It seems more likely that it would have been Halltown. Bois D'Arc is in Greene County. It is about 5 or 6 miles east and 4 or 5 miles north of Halltown. Halltown has always been in Ozark Township. But Turnback Township starts just 1 mile south of Halltown. Yes, it is very likely that George Ingram and Mary Ray were working on the farm rather than being relatives. Yes, that was quite common. The Stewart's oldest daughter Carrie was listed as 9 years old in the 1880 census and not listed in 1870, which means that she was likely born sometime between June 1, 1870 and June 1, 1871. She could have been born shortly after the census and Mary Ray may have been there to help during the last months before the baby came or even earlier. As you say, there are several explanations for George and Mary being there. There are some census records available for free on the Internet, but most are not. I suspect that a large genealogical library in Dallas would have a subscription to one of these services. You could go to the library and use it there. But I don't know which library or libraries. The Lawrence County Historical Society has published the census records for Lawrence County through 1920 and I have those. The 1850 census of Lawrence Countyh and part of the 1870 census of Lawrence County census are online at the Lawrence County Rootsweb page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/rsrchfil.htm along with some other records there. The Ozarks Genealogical Society has published many of the Greene County censuses. Some counties have some records posted on the Internet and others do not. You can start at a couple of places: US GenWeb starting with state lists at: http://www.usgenweb.org/statelinkstext.html Go the the state, county, etc. There are also records there at the various US GenWeb Archives websites. Another place to start is Cyndi's List at: http://www.CyndisList.com/ which is an index to all kinds of helpful information and websites. If you have an questions or need any explanation of what I have sent, please ask, for example, if you don't know what all of the information in the census records represents. I don't usually provide a full explanation because it takes too long, but I will answer questions about it. For example, the 1900 census provides a lot of information that is not easily identified unless you are familiar with it. In General J. McCoy's record below the "M-25" means that they have been married 25 years. The first TN is his place of birth, the second his father's and the third his mother's. In Sarah A.'s record below the "7-7" means that she has had 7 children and that 7 are living. If it were 5-3, it would be the woman had had 5 children and only 3 are still living. 1900 Census, Missouri, Lawrernce County, Ozark Township, family 350: General J. McCoy Jul 1846-53 Yr. M-25 Tn. Pat, Yes, the same Ezekial/Ezekiel Stewart. The suggestion is that it is possible that he was married before because of the George Ingram living in his household in 1870. There really isn't any evidence that he was married before but we can't rule it out. He was several years older than Nancy and could have been married before. In both the 1870 and 1880 censuses, Ezekiel's place of birth is listed as New York. In 1880 it also lists New York as his father's place of birth and his mother's place of birth. Without knowing a county, it would be very time consuming to try to find him in the 1850 or 1860 New York censuses because he might be living with his parents still, at least in 1850. Finding this family in the 1900 Census using the Missouri Soundex should be another priority for you. It will also tell how many children Nancy had had and how many were still living. You also might find an obituary in the Springfield newspapers or Lawrence County newspapers. If George were Ezekiel's own son by a previous wife, his surname should still be Stewart instead of Ingram. However, it is possible that he is Ezekiel's stepson if Ezekiel were previously married and his first wife had had a son before she married Ezekiel. Get's rather complicated, but there are several possibiliities - nephew, stepson, half-brother, cousin, etc., or even no relation at all. Another possibility to keep an eye open for, as you go backward, is that George is Ezekiel's son by a previous wife.....given the age difference between Ezekiel and Nancy, and that Ezekiel is 24 years older than George. --pig On 4/10/2003 8:16, [email protected] shared this thought: > 1870 Census, Missouri, Greene Co., Center Twp., dwelling 2038, family 2019: > Steward, Ezekiel, 40, m, NY, farmer > Nancy, 23, f, Mo, keeping house > Ray, Mary, 19, f, Mo > Ingram, George, 16, m, NY, farmer > [NOTE: Because George Ingram is also from NY perhaps he is a relative, maybe > a nephew of Ezekiel's. Pat, I did not find any Markley in Lawrence Co. at this time. I also checked Dade county because some people in the Halltown - Lawrenceburg area attended church in Dade County, but I did not find him there either. Some people also attended churches in Greene County so I checked there, too, and I think I found Brother Markley. 1920 Census, Missouri, Greene Co., Springfield City, Ward 4, E.D. 35, sheet 6B, lines 62-63, dwelling 132, family 149, 224 Nat. Boulevard: Markley, Andrew J., head, male, white, 60, married, born West Virginia, father born Pennsylvania, mother born Virginia, Pastor Lee (?), wife, female, white, 30, married, born Missouri, father born United States, mother born United States, no occupation. I did not find what church he pastored, there are several along National Avenue in Springfield. He probably lived near the church maybe even in a parsonage or home owned by the church. The intersecting street after this was St. Louis St. which is the main street through the Square in Springfield. If I remember correctly there was a renumbering of house numbers in Springfield after 1920, so the house number may not be the same as that today. Also, it does not say whether it was North or South. National Avenue north of St. Louis is, and I believe has been, commercial/industrial for a long time because the railroad runs just a couple of blocks north of St. Louis. However, south of St. Louis St. on National Avenue are many nice homes and churches. The staff at the Library Center in Springfield may be able to help you further identify Brother Markley. You can phone, write, or email your lookup request to them. I still would like to find "Brother Markley" who took my dad to the Stewarts South of town for adoption in 1914 or 1915. I recently found a picture of Dad right after his arrival and the pup he always talked about is in the picture. Dad is standing in front of a huge felled tree (taller than he is) with the (big) pup at his side and two little girls are setting up on the tree trunk. So cute. If anyone would recognize who the girls are it would make the picture more interesting. Also, I transcribed the Stewart Bible last night and found that really interesting. Ross, Hey, thanks, that gives me a little bit of a start. I will have to track his wife to find the connection. But, I can do that. I will be in Springfield in mid June and will do some research in the Genealogical Library there. I will get back to you and everybody else on your long genealogy post. Pat, My ancestral lines in the Halltown - Lawrenceburg - Ozark Township area are the Cameron, Hollingsworth, and Moore families and numerous other surnames that married into these families including some you have mentioned. First I am sending a little information on the Camerons and McCoys. My own great grandfather Hardin Cameron didn't come the Lawrenceburg area until 1894, but his older brother William M. Cameron had come to Lawrrence County about 1869, and their uncle Harden Cameron settled on the Lawrence County - Greene County line east of Halltown about 1839-1840. His family is in the 1850 Lawrence County census. After 3-greats uncle Harden Cameron's first wife, Elizabeth Ray, died probably about 1855-56, he married Anna L. McCoy, whom I believe is the older sister of your great grandfather General Jackson "Jack" McCoy. So as not to confuse anyone, his first name was General; it was not a military title. Some have listed Jack as the stepson of Harden Cameron and the son of Anna L. (McCoy) Cameron, but I believe that he was her younger brother. It is very likely that his death certificate may give his parents' names. The data below provides information on the first generation of my 3-greats uncle Harden/Hardin Cameron's family and some data on the McCoy family which I believe identifies Anna L. (McCoy) Cameron and General Jackson McCoy's parents, James McCoy and Sarah J. Carter, and the siblings of Anna L. (McCoy) Cameron and General Jackson McCoy, as well as Jack's wife, Sarah Adaline "Addie" (Wallis) McCoy, her parents, Nathan McNeill "Mack" Wallis and Martha E. Lotspeich and grandparents, William and Matilda (maiden name?) Wallis and Felix and Eliza H. (maiden name?) Lotspeich and other members of these families. This is information primarily derived from published transcriptions and is not proven though it offers evidence. Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 04/03/03 12:50PM >>> Some of us have been discussing privately that many of us from long time area families are related in some way. Any of you all that are on this forum that may be related to us too? It would be interesting to find out how many pioneer families are trying to find out about their backgrounds. In major discussion are the old families that lived around Halltown. I have questions about the Ezekial Stewart, father of Byron Stewart and Ines Stewart Cantrell. Also interested in the Mason families and the Hunts families. There were two families of Stewart that were not related. Their property backed up to each other. One on the East side (us) and one on the West Side just South of Halltown. Also about GJ McCoy and his family. Alice McCoy Stewart was my grandmother. Alice had at least five sisters and two brothers. Where would their families be now? I wonder. I have questions about more families. My mother's (she was born and raised in Aurora) ancestors help settle the Aurora area. I have her as Eliza W. Neal, daughter of William Neal. Eliza is 35 years old on the 1850 census, and doesn't appear on the 1860, and Felix remarries in 1853, so I'm presuming she's deceased 1850-53, but have not checked the divorce records. I don't have a marriage date; she's married before they leave Tennessee. That's cousinly hand-me-down, so take it for what it's worth. --pig, Lotspeich researcher, 1st cousin 4x removed to Martha E. Nancy, Do you have the book you're refering too? If you do would you look for someone with the name of Markley, either last name or first name. If you find one I'd like to know if there is a wife with him and who she was. He was in Halltown Missouri or surrounding area in at least as early as 1915. The name GRAMMER caught my attention. Are there others on the list who are researching Grammers at Marionville and Aurora? If so, I have info on the family to share and would like to learn more myself. Sorry, meant to send that last message directly to Pat. Kaye
Hi Pat, yes was trying to tell the other Pat about my Moms friend Chloe. She was living in Burbank, Ca when my Mom died in 1987 but have had no contact with her since. My grandparents Will and Allie Mayabb owned the Halltown Cafe when my Mom was growing up. Will died in 1926 and Allie continued to run the cafe until her death in1932. I am not sure what happened to it after that. My Moms sisters were Zella Johnson and Lela Brazil then Campbell. Her brother was Harvey Mayabb. Does your Mom remember them? Does she live near you now or still in Mo? I bet she has some wonderful memories to share. Your Mom might remember the Bank of Halltown. It was started by several people including my other gf William Ross Hutchison. I have a couple of blank checks from it. I was told it was in the building that is now occupied by the telephone company. It looks like the building has been remodeled though. I wish I had some pictures of early Halltown but only have one. I will try and dig it out and send it to you if you want. Wish we could visit Mo again but I don't think we will be able to anytime soon. Kaye
Dina, Back to your history question. I have found that I have some books that might interest you, but only one is still in print. I have the 1870-1970 Centennial book that was produced when Aurora celebrated it's centennial in 1970. I have a book titled "Track to the Past, A Pictorial History of Aurora, Missouri." The David Wheat Family genealogy (I am related to the Wheat family). "Places I Have Lived and Worked" by Dale Lee Hilton. "McNatt Family Record 1706-1992." I have some more things packed away in boxes, but that is a start. The "Track to the Past" can be ordered from the Aurora Advertiser (local newspaper) and they might be able to tell you about the Centennial book. The other books were private gifts from family friends and weren't published for sale. On page, well, this book doesn't have page numbers...so it's near the middle of the Aurora Centennial book (not a real book, but a magazine type) We have a picture of H.P. Grammar with a picture of the inside of his store with this caption: "Two different kinds of food stores were among Aurora's largest in the period between 1900 and 1930. One, at upper left, was Grammer's Grocery and Market, located on North McNatt avenue. Because it delivered orders brought or telephoned in, it had customers all over town." I was looking through several of the books and the name Grammer comes up several times. Kaye, I'm not especially looking for Mason...maybe you're answering another Pat, but there must be two families of Mason around Halltown (probably cousins). The Mason I knew in the mid forties is Mamie Mason Bullard. Mamie lived just south of us and used to help my Mom with her three little kids (one was me). Her husband died right after WWI with the flu. She never married and raised her two girls, Dorothy and Helen by herself. Dorothy married Loren Sifferman and they lived outside Halltown for most of their married life; had one daughter who also had one daughter. Others are looking for Mason's that had four or five girls. Your relative that owned the Halltown cafe was probably the wife of one of Mamie's brothers. Just guessing there; somebody who knows correct me here. My Mom is busy thinking about this, but if I remember correctly. Memory jolt....I recall sitting on a swivel stool in the Halltown cafe with my father. I was no more than ten years old, maybe 11 and Chloe was there. She looked funny to me because her skin was a different color than mine; it had a bluish tinge and I ask Daddy about it. He told me she had some sort of disease that made her skin blue. The restaurant was near the beauty shop and barber shop near the phone company office on the south side of the hwy. That is my total recollection of Chloe. The next summer when we visited Halltown the restaurant was closed, so I don't know what happened to her. Do you? Remind me of who your mom is.
