    3. Henry Thornton lived in Barry County as far as I know. There is no tombstone for his grave from what I was told by my g-g aunt, just a fieldstone in that cemetary. Apparently his son, John Franklin Thornton was also buried in the same cemetary with a fieldstone as a marker. John Franklin's wife (Ida Sheppard Thornton) was buried in Red Oak Cemetary in Lawrence Co. She died the same month as Henry Thornton in 1902. JF Thornton didn't survive either for very long. We believe Ida had TB so did JF. ThanksBrenda From: "Ross Cameron" To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Fellowship/Thomas Hi, There is a Friendship Baptist Church cemetery in Pierce City. According to Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 9, Pierce City and Western Pierce Township, p. 92, part of this site was made into a parking lot. The only tombstone inscriptions reported there are two Higgs stones. There are a only a few Thorntons listed in the indexes to all nine volumes of Lawrence County Tombstone Inscriptions, but there is no Henry Thornton. I also did not find him in the 1900 Lawrence County census, though there was one Thornton family and a James Thornton boarding in another dwelling. 3. Hi Michelle, Yes, Lemuel W. Allen, Jr.'s first wife was Mildred Lewis, daughter of Richard C. Lewis, according Lemuel's biography in Ozark Region (1917), Vol. III, History of Lawrence County, Missouri, Biographical, pp. 37-38, which ends with the following paragraph: "His first marriage was contracted in 1878 with Miss Melvina J. Lewis, a daughter of Richard C. Lewis. To this union were born three daughters, Ettie, (Mrs. Press Stockstill); Levada (Preston); and Grace Allen, who is a student in Marionville College. The first Mrs. Allen passed away in 1891, at the age of thirty-three, and rests in the Spring River Camp Ground Cemetery. In 1897 Mr. Allen married as his second wife, Miss Tressie Bogle, daughter of John A. Bogle. Mr. Bogle was a native of Tennessee, from which state he moved to this region. To this marriage has been born one daughter, Lela, who resides with her parents at the family home." Some of the information above is inaccurate based on other sources. I have noticed many errors in these biographies just as there are in the earlier Goodspeed's history. His first wife was Mildred Lewis, not Melvina. He had a sister named Melvina He only had the two daughters by Mildred -- Ettie and Grace. Lavada was Ettie (Allen) Stockstill's daughter, Lemuel's granddaughter. I think the person who took the notes for the biography or the one who wrote it confused the fact that Lavada was a granddaughter. Often these biographies list the spouse and children of each child of the biographee that is married and has children. Lemuel did have three daughters, two by his first wife and one by his second wife. The writer obviously took the three daughters information and changed the notes so that there were three daughters by the first wife instead of a total of three daughters. Etta Allen, 20, Verona, was married to Presley Stockstill, 23, Verona, on 17 July 1901, by George F. Harbour, at the bride's residence, Book I, p. 139 [Lawrence County Marriage Records, Vol. 8, Sept. 1900-Jan. 1904, p. 36 Lemuel, Mildred, and Tressie Allen, and Etta and Lavada Stockstill are buried at Lee Cemetery (also called Campground Cemetery or Spring River Campground Cemetery). Lawrence County Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. VI, Spring River and Freistatt Townships, Lee Cemetery: p. 63: Stockstill, Lavada, 2 Jul 1902 - 24 Sep 1916 Stockstill, Etta Allen, 28 Oct 1880 - 21 Sep 1967 p. 65: Allen, Mildred J., 1859 - 1891 Lemuel W., 1852 - 1945 Tressie E., 1870 - 1959 Here is an abstract of a brief obituary for Levada from the Aurora Advertiser, even though both of her names are misspelled. The error may be either in the original newspaper or in the transcription. Ruth Browning, Southwest Missouri Newspaper Abstracts, Vol. 27, Aurora Advertiser, Jan. 7, 1915-May 23, 1918, p. 27: "Sept. 28, 1916, Died, Miss Nevada Stocksdill on her way to her home near Oklahoma City. Because Etta was buried in Lawrence County, I would suggest that you look for an obituary for her in the Lawrence County newspapers even though she may not have died in Lawrence County. That should list her survivors and their places of residence. Even easier would be to check with the Library Center in Springfield, Missouri, because her obituary might also have been published in the Springfield newspapers and they have a published index for the newspapers for 1967. You could also check the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) online for their sons Preston and Gerald Stockstill. Now to the other daughter, Grace Allen, who is related to me by marriage. RC Lewis is my 3rd gr grandfather and Mildred would be the sister to my gr gr grandfather Richard L. Lewis. Mildred is shown in the 1870 census as living with her father but by 1880 she isn't living at home. The Goodspeeds biography does not state a marriage year. 3. This is the funeral book I said I'd send for Alice McCoy Stewart who died in 1940. If you want it as a word document send me an email address where you can receive attachments and I'll send it. This makes their life seem more real than just a census record. It was a big funeral for Halltown. Mom remembers Morris Wilkerson and said that he did grown up with my Dad, John A. Stewart. You may recognize some of the names on Grandma's book since a lot of them grew up with Dad and therefore your Dad. The Halltown High School burned some time after 1936...not sure when, but it was before I started school in Halltown in about 1950. It was gone by then and the foundation not even there. 3. Virginia, Where do you live now? I'm the one who started the Stewart, McCoy etc. line. My father is John Albert Stewart. There were two Stewart families there. Byron was my grandfather; the other was John Buff Stewart and his son John Howard Stewart. Two of John Buff's daughters still live in Halltown, one on the old Stewart home place. Our place backed up to theirs. I have been told that the Byron Stewart property took in a lot of the property for quite a ways South of Halltown until after Byron died and split it up between his kids. Two of the kids sold out and moved to California. Only my Dad stayed and then he sold and we went to California in 1953 after his mother had been dead for several years.. I'll ask my mother about the Wilkersons. The only ones I know live in Aurora, but that may not be the same family. I'll type of Alice McCoy's death book and you can see if you recognize any of the names. 3. I only found two Goodriches in the 1870 census index for Lawrence County. Both were single men, James age 23 and Sylvanus age 55. When I widened the search to all of Missouri, there are 70 households of Goodriches. I looked in the surrounding counties of Greene, Jasper, Newton, Barry, Dade, and Polk, but didn't find her. ----- Original Message ----- From: "M.M. 3. Goodspeed's Biography for Lawrence Co. states....."L.W. ALLEN Jr. son of L.W. ALLEN Sr. and Sarah A. SPRINGER Allen " chose for his companion in life Miss Minnie, daughter of R. C. LEWIS, Esq. and this union has resulted in the birth of two children, both daughters, Ettie and Grace." I assume this is Mildred LEWIS daughter of R.C. LEWIS and Eliza GUTHRIE Lewis. Can anyone help me find marriage or census records for LW Allen and Mildred Lewis? Also I would like any further information and contact with descendents of Ettie or Grace the children of L.W. Allen Jr and Mildred Lewis. Did they have any other children than the 2 listed in the biography ? All help is appreciated. 3. I have a biographical sketch of Lewis B. Whinery from Index to Greene Co. MO History and also a short sketch of The Spring Creek Mill from History of Stone County Missouri and a short sketch of the Caplinger Mill from Historical Sketches of Cedar County Missouri by Abbott, Clayton. Also have a biographical sketchof William C. Whinrey of Lawrence Co, brother of Lewis B. If any of this you do not have and would want I will be happy to send it to you. My Gr-gr-grandparents are Peterson and Martha Whinrey Grammer who lived in Lawrence Co. So I am interested in all Whinery info. At one time we had a Whinery web page with quite a lot of information on it but I was unable to locate it now. Also interesting to note you are at the State Historical Society in Iowa. We lived in Cedar Falls for about thirty-five years. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] L Byron Stewart and Alice McCoy Family Bible

    3. Pat, Please excuse my surprise that people south of Halltown would have had a Bois D'Arc address. I have received another email about someone who lived southwest of Halltown and had an Ash Grove address. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised. I have sent many emails before about people living in one county and getting their mail via a post office in another county. Perhaps the size or "class" of the post office determined whether or not it could serve rural patrons. It may be that the Halltown post office only served people right in the village of Halltown and the rural areas around Halltown may have been served by Rural Route carriers from other post offices like Ash Grove and Bois D'Arc. Ross >>> [email protected] 04/10/03 01:59PM >>> Pat, When you are in Halltown later this year check the Farm Road numbers and then it can easily be located on a map. It is surprising to me that the address south of Halltown would have been Bois D'Arc. It seems more likely that it would have been Halltown. Bois D'Arc is in Greene County. It is about 5 or 6 miles east and 4 or 5 miles north of Halltown. Halltown has always been in Ozark Township. But Turnback Township starts just 1 mile south of Halltown. Yes, it is very likely that George Ingram and Mary Ray were working on the farm rather than being relatives. Yes, that was quite common. The Stewart's oldest daughter Carrie was listed as 9 years old in the 1880 census and not listed in 1870, which means that she was likely born sometime between June 1, 1870 and June 1, 1871. She could have been born shortly after the census and Mary Ray may have been there to help during the last months before the baby came or even earlier. As you say, there are several explanations for George and Mary being there. There are some census records available for free on the Internet, but most are not. I suspect that a large genealogical library in Dallas would have a subscription to one of these services. You could go to the library and use it there. But I don't know which library or libraries. The Lawrence County Historical Society has published the census records for Lawrence County through 1920 and I have those. The 1850 census of Lawrence Countyh and part of the 1870 census of Lawrence County census are online at the Lawrence County Rootsweb page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/rsrchfil.htm along with some other records there. The Ozarks Genealogical Society has published many of the Greene County censuses. Some counties have some records posted on the Internet and others do not. You can start at a couple of places: US GenWeb starting with state lists at: http://www.usgenweb.org/statelinkstext.html Go the the state, county, etc. There are also records there at the various US GenWeb Archives websites. Another place to start is Cyndi's List at: http://www.CyndisList.com/ which is an index to all kinds of helpful information and websites. If you have an questions or need any explanation of what I have sent, please ask, for example, if you don't know what all of the information in the census records represents. I don't usually provide a full explanation because it takes too long, but I will answer questions about it. For example, the 1900 census provides a lot of information that is not easily identified unless you are familiar with it. In General J. McCoy's record below the "M-25" means that they have been married 25 years. The first TN is his place of birth, the second his father's and the third his mother's. In Sarah A.'s record below the "7-7" means that she has had 7 children and that 7 are living. If it were 5-3, it would be the woman had had 5 children and only 3 are still living. 1900 Census, Missouri, Lawrernce County, Ozark Township, family 350: General J. McCoy Jul 1846-53 Yr. M-25 Tn. Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 04/10/03 01:08PM >>> Ross, The Stewarts had property South of Halltown, quite a lot of it and the "old home place" was south of Halltown in a location that I can find, but can't tell you the road numbers. The address out there was Bois D'arc, I don't know what the township would have been at the time. Mom says that many people at the time had young girls keep house for them and teen boys that helped with the farming. Therefore any strange name on a census was probably that. 1870 Green county census: I suspect that George Ingram was someone from Ezekiel's home N.Y. area that came to work for them. Naturally he could be a relative. Mom doesn't remember the family talking about anyone with the last name of Ingram. Mary Ray was in the household too, but was probably helping with the housework or could have been just a friend of Nancy's that was at the house when the census taker showed up. 1920 Lawrence County Census:They called my grandfather Barnie and my dad wanted to call my son (Byron) Barnie, but I didn't like that. Ha! Thanks for the census records. I am really new at finding genealogy information and have been floundering with the volume and complexity of records. Is there a "free" place to do census searches for both Missouri and Arkansas on the internet? Any tips?
