    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Pierce City Cemetery & First Baptist Church
    2. Wilma Fields
    3. I was through Pierce City this morning on my way to visit an Uncle in Mt. Vernon. I stopped by the cemetery. Except for one tree, the cemetery was not hit by the tornado---no stones were broken nor toppled. If any of you have family history related to the First Baptist Church of Pierce city, I do have a picture I took of the damage. Please feel free to request it, and I will send it to your e-mail address, if you provide it. Wilma

    2. Hello Everyone, On Sunday, Mother's Day, my Aunt Eunice (Bryant) Sexton, wife of Raymond Sexton, passed away in Greenfield, Dade Co. I understand that there was an obituary for her in the Joplin Globe probably on Tuesday. I am sure there will also be obits in the Miller Press, the Greenfield Vedette and maybe the Lawrence County Record. I will see the Greenfield Vedette, but probably not until next week. I would very much appreciate it if any of you have the time, to send me the text of the obituaries. I could not find the Joplin Globe online. Best Regards and my thanks, Janet Hunter

    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Tornado recovery report
    2. Pat Miller
    3. I am sending an edited report from a local involved friend concerning the tornado. This is from the Aurora. Pat <big clip> There was 23 miles, 3/4 mile wide through Lawrence County of disaster. Every mile is devastating. Locally, we have all we can handle and it is hard to look beyond your immediate community. Pierce City still has buildings standing even though they will have to be torn down. Stockton didn't even have buildings left. We came into Pierce City from the north Sat. evening. There were no trees around the spring area just before you enter town. The metal buildings and old houses you first pass have parts standing but are not salvageable. The old downtown area has the building fronts standing, but shells behind. Yesterday, I saw a 10 minute video of the tornado approaching Aurora. It was unbelievable. You could see the smaller ones spin off and then go up. One man I spoke with said his neighbor got two pictures of the tornado just before it hit his house. It was well forecasted and on the ground so long that there are lots of good pictures. The County emergency services were warned Sat. noon to expect a major storm later Sunday. They were in place and waiting. The County has contracted for the debris to be picked up. Most of the area hit is rural. The company cannot go onto the private property. So there is a need for volunteers to help move the debris to the road. There is a mobil home frame in a fence row on ZZ. I hope that is close enough to the road! I am learning about all types of disaster ministries. The one I learned about today is a church in Iowa has a daycare ministry. They have trailers set up as daycares that they move in for the victims so they can work on their property. All the personnel are cleared and licensed. You can't have the ladies at the local church do it, they have to have background checks! How regulated we are!!! I had Red Cross Volunteers come in today. One from Iowa and one from Vermont. Their job was to see to the elderly and minority storm victims!!!............. <clip> Your report about no clothing is true. I was warned from the start about accepting clothing. Red Cross wouldn't accept it from day one and now I know why. I stopped accepting clothing late last week and received a call from someone on the County level warning about accepting more. I have accepted extra large clothing. That is the only request I have had................. .......... a handout of places in the two towns where people can get food, clothing, showers, household items, and volunteer help. The Aurora Rural Fire Department is handing them out to the people. Communication is difficult. They are all working on their property without electricity. They are not listening to the TV or radio. Many even lost their cars. One "upscale" looking family said their three cars were all parked in different areas and all were destroyed. We are seeing a tremendous outpouring of support from family, friends, employers, and coworkers. Most people are getting what they need through this sphere of support. <big clip>

    3. I have finished the transcription and will send it to those who ask for it privately. Just don't want to put it out to the world in case there are errors. I transcribed it just like I read it, but don't know whether this inventory is exactly right. While I am in Missouri I will check with the records in Mt. Vernon. BTW, I saw somewhere in my stuff (don't remember where) that this cemetery has another name besides the three I knew it was called. Does anyone have the history about all of the different names of this place? Pat,

    3. I'd like to help too, but I'm 400 miles away and can't drop everything to help either. Sorry about the crutches situation...hope it gets better soon.. Red Cross site is at: http://www.redcross.org/news/ds/tornadoes/030508missouri4.html 1)Red Cross Donations may be sent to: Amercian Red Cross Disaster Relief 1835 E Chestnut Expressway Springfield, MO 65802 Mark in the memo section of the check "Pierce City Disaster Relief". 2) Zip code for Pierce City is 65723. I would suggest you address any written correspondense to the city at the zip code. If you send money, write how you require them to spend it on the memo section of the check; they have to use it for what you request. I don't know anyone in Pierce City so can't find out first hand for you. Pat, John Wall wrote: >Pat, > >I wish I could go there and help but I'm 2,00 miles away and on crutches at >the moment. 3. Pat, If your Grammer Cemetery list dates earlier than Mary Curry's, I would be interested in the burials noted. Today there are undoubtedly stones that were once there that are missing. We first visited the cemetery probably in the late seventies when it was nothing but brambles and poison ivy, so hard to look for stones that were down. We did find Peterson and Martha Grammer's stones laying under a bush near the entrance of the cemetery. The last time we were there was in 1997 and the change was amazing. I don't know if any stones were reset. Peterson and Martha Grammer's stones are no longer there. I doubt they could have been reset. J L Grammer's stone is there and in good shape. It has no dates on it - just J L and Co. B Burrows Mo, HG. From that inscription I feel certain that is Jesse L Grammer, my great-grandfather, because I have documents that he served in that Company in the Civil War. From family records he apparently died in 1890. But there are Grammers, who died earlier that I feel must surely have been buried there. The Grammers came to Lawrence Co. probably in the fall or winter of 1851. Peterson's mother, Elizabeth, died ca 1 May 1852 and his brother, Leonard, died within a year after Elizabeth's death so it just seems logical that they were buried there, but no records to prove it. 3. Pat, Yes, that is my 3-greats aunt. Don McNeill sent me a photograph of her tombstone awhile back. The LCHS list transcribes her name as Rachael, but Curry's lists Rachel which is correct. LCHS lists 69 tombstones, on one of which neither the names nor dates are legible. Curry lists 77 stones. Ross >>> [email protected] 05/13/03 01:03PM >>> Ross, Let me get this transcribed so I can read it with some intelligence. There is Rachel W. Moore b.Jan 14, 1817 d March 12, 1893 on the list I have and there are seventy four headstones listed. How many are on the other lists? It says that there are a lot of graves marked with sand stones with no names. So this may be recent. I don't know where it came from or who typed it. I will put it out for anyone's use as soon as I get it figured out. If this is from a McNatt cousin that I know was in the area searching for graves in the 1980s then he might not have been able to read what was there in past inventories. 2. Pat Miller
    3. Ross, I suspect that this could be a combination of both lists with some additional information from whoever put it together. Mom doesn't know who did it and says it was with some of her sister's things (Carol A.McNatt d. 1999). Would it be possible to get a copy of both lists so I can see if I have all of the dates correct? Or do I have to go see for myself, hope the cemetery is still there. Some of this is really difficult and one date just got copied out. Pat, Ross Cameron wrote: >Pat, > >Yes, that is my 3-greats aunt. Don McNeill sent me a photograph of her tombstone awhile back. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] 1891 BIDDLECOME, PEIRCE CITY, photo on Ebay
    2. Good Morning Everyone, In case any of you Biddlecome's are interested, I believe the Myrtle in the David Biddlecome household below in the 1900 census married Ezra Estus around 1910. They moved to Visalia, California by the 1940s. They had one son and four daughters, one of whom, Thelma married my mother's brother Milton Sexton. My aunt Thelma and Uncle Milton had four children. I have more information on their descendants, and a cousin should sound send me more details, including on Ezra and Myrtle's other children. As we visited my aunt and uncle several times a year, we saw Ezra and Myrtle often. Ezra made a mean persimmon cookie. On a much sadder note, Eunice Bryant Sexton, the wife of my mother's oldest brother, Raymond Sexton, passed away on Sunday afternoon. Although, she had been in poor health for a number of years, she was surrounded by children, grandchildren, great grandchildren at her peaceful death. She was my only remaining aunt/uncle, and I am very glad I was able to see her a couple of months ago (and I copied down her recipes for homemade ketchup and apple butter). I will pass the Biddlecome emails to a cousin.
