    3. Pat, Thanks for the information. Yes, historically it is very helpful. I wonder if the Whites would answer a letter from me? Do you have the name of the store and/or the address? 1. [MOLAWREN-L] Masonic Research
    2. Sharon Ford
    3. Hi, I just finished reading a very interesting article "Masonic Research: Did Your Ancestors Join?" by Bruce Black in The Searcher, Summer 2003. Volume 40, No. 1, pg-188. The Searcher is a publication of the Southern California Genealogical Society [ http://www.scgsgenealogy.com ]. I would like to search for the Masonic records of my ancestors and I have a few questions. 1. Has anyone on the Dade or Lawrence County lists done any research on the Masonic affiliation of their ancestors in the same counties? Please tell me, what do the initials "A. F. & A. M." and "D. D. G. M." mean? Both my gr grandfather, John William Nickel, and my gr, gr grandfather, Thomas Nickel were Masons. Their farms were located between Lawrenceburg and Halltown [closer to Lawrenceburg]. In the Reprint of Goodspeed's 1888 History of Lawrence County, pg. 129, it states that Thomas Nickle was a member of Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 99 A. F. & A. M. since it's beginning in Jan. 1853. I found the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce website for Fraternal Organizations: http://www.mtvernonchamber.com/AboutOrgs.htm and it gave the address and contact of Dan Ditzler. 2. Does anyone know if they still have the old records? In the same book, pg. 166, it states that John W. Nickle was a member of Rock Prairie Lodge No. 267 in Lawrenceburg, and was a Past Master of the year 1883. The article mentioned above stated that if the Masonic ancestor was a Civil War Veteran [Union or Confederate], there would be other information possibly available. 3. Is The Rock Prairie Lodge No. 267 still in existence and do they still have the old records? If not, did this lodge merge with another? I could not find it through any website. He lived Ash Grove the remaining few years of his life. I found a "Masonic Hall" in Ash Grove through the http://www.smartpages.com/directory but is the Hall still a Lodge? The rest of the lodges I found in the area were all listed as a lodge. 4. Do I need to contact the Grand Lodge? If so, does anyone know how to contact them? I Found the website for the Grand Lodge of MIssouri [ http://www.momason.org ] in Kansas City, but no address is given. Note: This site has links to the Missouri Lodges & Districts. If you click on the Masonic Lodges link, you can find the Grand Lodge Sites for other states. Any information, suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 1. [MOLAWREN-L] Lawrence County, MO - Nichols/Nicholas and Butler
    2. Leona Headley
    3. I am trying to find two Nicholas children. There mother was Eliza Butler, daughter of John and Nancy Butler. I think Eliza married Wilson Nicholas on 05-Feb-1849 in Lawrence County. Eliza is living with her parents in the 1850 census. I think either her parents still counted her or her husband was somewhere else and she was just listed as a Butler. William Perm Nicholas b. 20-Sep-1855 and Martha Ann Nicholas b. 16-Aug-1859. Both children were listed in the Will of John R. Butler in 1866. So I assume Eliza had died along with her husband. I have not been able to find either of the children in the 1860 or 1870 census. Any help finding information on either one of these children, I would be so grateful. Leona Headley 3310 W. Teel Rd. 1. [MOLAWREN-L] Common Law Marraige Update
    2. Wilma Fields
    3. Saralie, and others! Well, my mail today had part of law pertaining to law of Common Law Marriage in Mo. First, earliest they found was 1879 . Revised Statutes: Sec,3267. Marriage may be solemnized, by whom.--Marriages may be solemnized by any judge, judge of county court and justices of the peace, or any licensed or ordained preacher of the gospel (G.S>.458, 4----b.) (b) Marriage is presumed when parties cohabit, and hold themselves out as man and wife, and there are circumstances from which a present contract may be inferred. 65 Mo. 501. It is a civil contract, and when parties capable of contracting agree, per verba de praesenti, with each other to be husband and wife, and cohabit as such, the marriage is valid, and no ceremony need be performed by a minister of the gospel, or officer of the law, authorized to solemnize marriages. 63 Mo. 501; 66 Mo. 391. As to what constitutes a marriage among savage tribes, the legitimacy of children, see 30 Mo. 72. Second, Revised Statutes 1889 -same as above Third, Revised Statutes 1919---Quite lengthy, but the same. Fourth, Laws of Missouri, Fifty-First General Assembly, January 5, 1921. H. B. 159 AN ACT to amend chapter 63 of the Revised Statutes of the state of Missouri of 1919, entitled "Marriage and marriage contracts," by amending section 7302 of said chapter by adding at the end thereof the following words, " and no marriage hereafter contracted shall be recognized as valid unless such license has been previously obtained and unless such marriage is solemnized by a person authorized by law to solemnize marriages. Common-law marriages hereafter contracted shall be null and void. Provided, however, that no marriage shall be deemed or adjudged invalid, nor shall the vlidity therof be in any way affected on account of any want of authority in any person solemnizing the same under the next preceding section, if consummated with the full belief on the part of the persons, so married or either of them, that they were lawfully joined in marriage. Well, there it is. I would assume then , that at the time Common Law marriage was recognized as valid by the state, that all rights of marriage would have also been in effect. Don't you just love legalese? Wilma

    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Myers in Lawrence County
    2. Eddie Davis
    3. I'm seeking for any information on Jacob Myers, who was living in 1860 in Montgomery Township, Owen County, Indiana, but by 1870 was living in Lawrence County, Missouri, and in 1880 was in Tomahawk, Searcy County, Arkansas. I've got all the census records for him and his family for these years, but I'd like more data, especially on his Indiana years. He is listed on the 1870 census as unable to vote due to either a crime or rebellion, and I suspect he may have joined a Confederate group in the Civil War, possibly in Missouri. His family apparently stayed back in Indiana when he was gone, and no children were born from about 1861 to 1865. Any information on them would be greatly appreciated, here is what I have on them: Descendants of Jacob Myers Generation No. 1 1. 3. Lorrie Shorney, Are you the person in medical records that helped me find my aunt "Mary Crow"'s information on Monday July 21? If you are- thanks bunches for the help. I will come back eventually and look at the pictures again to see if I can identify her in those between 1929 and July 1931. Do you know if other information is available somewhere there about her family other than through Missouri State Vital Records? Would the Sanatorium have put a death announcement in any of the local papers and would they have had a funeral there for her? I just found out that my dad and his brother attended her funeral, but we don't know where it was. I also found out that her missing sister was there too. Pat Miller Dallas,TX

They will be sending me the History of the Laws and the exact laws concerning when Common Law Marriage was recognized in Mo. and the law when recognition was repealed in 1921. Should be hearing back within a day or so, and once they receive my check, will mail the copies to me. Wilma

    3. Saralie, This is also for me, as there is a possibility of a "common law" marriage in my husband's line. Futile searches for a marriage, have made some of us wonder! Hopefully, they will get back to me quicly. Sometimes it take up to 8 weeks to even hear from them. Since the lady contacted me so quickly, I am hoping I will get an answer to how many pages, total cost, etc. I have used Archives many times, and very seldom had to wait as long as they say one might. 3. Thanks, Wilma. I appreciate that you are continuing to pursue an answer. In a case where there is no probate file, would the common law wife just keep going into life unless some "legal" heir objects and confiscates whatever there was? I can't imagine that there was much, real estate was rented as far as I can determine, leaving only personal property for anyone to inherit... Wilma We have copies of the Laws of Missouri back to 1824. What exactly did you want concerning this law? Do you want a copy of the law which made common law marriages illegal or copies of the laws prior to that? Did you want to come here and view the laws for yourself, or do you want photocopies of the laws? We can copy them for you at the cost of ten cents per page. Please let us know your wishes.
