Leona, Thank you very much. This is in the same time period that my father was adopted. Was this adoption done "intercounty" and not across county lines? My father was born in Oregon County, Mo, taken to St. Louis (so I have been told) and taken from there to Lawrence County, Mo to be adopted. He also had a brother that was adopted into another family in Lawrence County. I have a Bible with the name of the man who brought the boys to Lawrence County. I will email a friend who lives near the Lawrence County seat and see if she knows who does county research there. I have been researching my father's adoption records and have been told that most records were kept in the county of the adoptive parents. For me that would be Lawrence County, MO. This would have been in about 1914 and prior to adoption records being sealed. Does anyone know if records were sealed retroactively in Missouri or forwarded to Jefferson City? If the records were kept at county level where would I find out about them in Lawrence County? I am in Texas and would love to find someone willing to get them for me if they are available. Thanks, Pat Miller

[No messages have come through the list for a couple of weeks -- but rather than just a test message, Ill pass along a story from Newton county which might be of interest to some Lawrence County researchers. At least the names McKee, Ritchie and Wear are connected to Lawrence County.] >From Missouri Patriot, published Springfield, Missouri, Thursday, 24 Aug 1865 Honor to Whom Honor Is Due On the 28th day of October, 1864 -- a memorable day for the citizens of Newtonia, Newton county, Mo. -- occurred the last fight with Prices rebel raiders in this State. That Post was garrisoned by company K of the 15th Mo. Cav. Vols., commanded by Lieut. R. H. Christian. For more than two years the Lieutenant and his command had distinguished themselves by capturing rebels and killing bushwhackers--not only in this county but in Jasper and McDonald counties, and often pursuing them into Arkansas. Many plans had been laid by the exasperated rebels to destroy this troublesome band of patriots, but all failed up to this fatal day. Christian lived about one-fourth of a mile from the fort (which had no cannon) and his wife had been confined on the 26th. On the morning of the 28th the Lieutenant was notified by his superior officer of the approach of the rebels in full force, and ordered to withdraw his command eastwardly, as the enemy was approaching from the north. Accordingly, he withdrew his men early in the morning to the timber, about two miles from town, from where he could have observed the enemies movements; but becoming restless, having had to leave his wife as she was too ill to be removed, he and a few of his men returned to town, and there watched for the approach of the enemy. At about 8 oclock a.m. the rebels appeared in sight about one mile distant, marching in three columns. The Lieutenant and his half dozen brave men stood as if fascinated, gazing on the swarming hosts, though often warned and entreated to go by Mrs. Wolcott, a Union lady, near whose house they were standing. But they depended on their horses, and apparently waited to get a shot. But the enemy had fleet horses also, and a gang of bushwhackers, who were well acquainted with the Lieutenant, and knew he would be likely to expose himself, came on like an avalanche, and swept all before them. Too late Christian attempted escape -- he was overtaken and killed. Not content with the death of their intrepid foe, these white savages (illegible word) him, and hacked off a portion of his head, skin and all, and returned to town, and with exultation and horrid oaths exhibited these bloody trophies to the Union ladies they met. Christian fell about two miles from town, near the house of Mrs. Jane Sanderson, whose husband - - a bushwhacker -- had been killed. She saw his mutilated body, and came to town crying, and said, as she described it I am called a rebel, but I cannot stand such sights as this. She informed some Union ladies where the body lay, and they, moved by her story, and by the taunts of the rebels, proceeded to enact their part, which for coolness and true heroism has not perhaps been surpassed during the war, and their names should be recorded and remembered with honor. They were: Miss Mary McKee, school teacher, Miss Amanda Ritchey, sister of the Captain, Mrs. Wear, wife of Lieut. Wear of Christians company, Miss Nancy A. J. Pearson, Miss Priscilla Walker, and Miss Elizabeth Killion. These ladies, accompanied and assisted by rs. Sanderson, (illegible word) into their service a small boy, with a yoke of oxen and a wagon, and amid the roar of cannon and the crash of small arms -- annoyed and insulted by the rebels going and coming -- they proceeded to where the body of the unfortunate Lieutenant lay, and brought it (illegible) to his own house, just as Gen. Sanborn arrived to reinforce Gen. Blunt, who was being pressed hard by the rebels. (The correspondent who contributed this article to the newspaper signed it Welcome.)

They are all buried in the McGhee area of Williams Timberlane (I think I have that right) Cemetery outside Welch OK. I've been told that since I was last there Ma and the boys have gained a headstone. Family lore has it that Q.P. McGhee, my grgrandmother's first cousin, gave permission for Ma & the boys to be buried there when no other place would permit it (and maybe at a time when Q.P., himself, was being sought by the FBI). I suppose it just seemed the logical place for Pa and whoever else there was. Ma got a bad rap. Leo
Ross, Thanks for that information on Ma Barker and her family. My step father, Earl Ford, used to say his mother told him Ma. Barker would look after him from time to time. Judy, The message below does not contain his email address as the others did. If you can send an email address for him, I will reply to him. The Spring River Fountain is the only Lawrence County newspaper extant for 1871 and according to Ruth Browning's published extracts, it does not mention his death. And as you know there were no death certificates in Lawrence County for this time period. Also, there is no probate record for him in Lawrence County in the early 1870s which would indicate that he did not live in Lawrence County at the time of his death or else his estate was not large enough to need probate. I would suggest that he check the St. Louis newspapers of which there are several for this time period at the State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia. The City of St. Louis does have death certificates for this time period even though the State of Missouri does not. They are online at ancestry.com. There is no William T. Scott listed, but there are 32 William Scott listings, 1850-1908. A possible match is: Scott, William Death Date: 27 May 1871 Volume: 4 Page: 134 Birth Place: Cemetery: County Library: RDSL 12 Missouri Archive: C 10370 SLGS Rolls: 311 Address: Orange St Another less likely in late 1870 is: Scott, William Death Date: 23 Nov 1870 Volume: 4 Page: 49 Birth Place: Cemetery: County Library: RDSL 12 Missouri Archive: C 10370 SLGS Rolls: 311 Address: 4005 N 2nd He should also check with the record keepers at Bellfontaine Cemetery if he has not already done so because they may have additional information. Ron (and MOLAWREN), Fred Mieswinkel gave a presentation on the Ma Barker Gang at the LCHS meeting in May 1991. The text of his presentation was published in the July 1991 issue of the Bulletin of the Lawrence County Historical Society, pp. 27-28, 36. There are some additional notes in later issues. The Bulletin is available for purchase from LCHS on CD if you are interested. I recommend that you contact Fred Mieswinkel through the Lawrence County Historical Society, P. O. Box 406, Mount Vernon, Mo. I am sure that he can provide you a lot of information. The following is extracted from his article. A copy of the marriage license was published in the article. George E. Barker, of Aurora, over 21, and Arrie Clark, of Mt. Vernon, over 18, were married on 14 Sep 1892 at Aurora by Rev. William B. Cochran, pastor of the First Christian Church at Aurora. "Ma" Barker was born Arizona Donnia Clark about 1872 near Ash Grove, Greene Co., Mo., to John and Emeline (Parker) Clark. The father died in the late 1870s and the mother remarried Reuben Reynolds. The family apparently moved to Lawrence County by 1889 because the oldest daughter Electa A. Clark, was listed as a resident of Aurora when she married on April 6, 1889. George and Arrie purchased a lot in Aurora in 1898, which in 1991 was located at 108 Jasper. They sold that in 1899. The family is not in the 1900 Lawrence County census and may have lived east of Riverdale in Christian County at that time. The youngest son was born in Aurora in 1902 and the older sons attended school there until the family moved to Webb City, Missouri, sometime around 1904-1908. Kimberly (and MOLAWREN), The Stotts City Sunbeam , 26 Jul 1901-27 Dec 1907, is on microfilm at the State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia. However, SHSM does not sell copies of newspaper microfilm to individuals and recently they stopped selling copies of newspaper microfilm to institutions. The Lawrence County Historical Society was purchasing microfilm of Lawrence County newspapers up until that time. LCHS does have the Stotts City Sunbeam microfilm and it is available at the McCanse Library in Mount Vernon. Looking for any info on the family of Dempsey Osley Pace and his wife Mary Elizabeth Johnston Pace. I believe Dempsey was born in 1807 in Arkansas and died before 1850 but I don't know where. Mary Elizabeth Johnston Pace is supposed to have died in Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co. Missouri in 1865. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks, Cindy
