If you see anything you would like further information about (like an obit, marriage announcement etc), please contact me directly. Judy Purcell has agreed to set up tables for an index which we will be able to sort alphabetically. A couple of other people volunteered to help should we need further assistance as this goes along. It's going to be a big job. These newspapers were loaned to me by Sue Price Ikerd, whose husband, Don, is a distant cousin of mine on the Forkner side of the family. I don't know who gave them to Sue, but this first group cover about 5 years in the middle l940's. She is going to send me the older ones for copying next, they start about l913. Sue asked me to contact the Laclede County Historical Society to see if they want the original newspapers. I spoke with Connie Morgan, the president, and while they would love to have a copy of the papers and an index, they don't really have a place or means of storing the newspapers, or the resources to preserve them. So I will end up sending them a copy and the index that we prepare. Sue Ikerd said that if the Laclede County Historical Society did not want the original papers, then they were to be offered to the Webster County group. I spoke with them and ended up with Linda Blazer, the director of the Webster County Historical Museum in Marshfield. This is the museum that opened in l997 in the old Carnegie Library building. I visited there last summer and they have done a wonderful job, and they have a resource room in the basement. Timing of my phone call was perfect because the Webster County Hisotrical Society is about to send in a proposal to the state of MO for money which is specifically for museums and historical societies to use in the preservation of historical documents. They are now in the process of preserving Marshfield newspapers with mylar, and Linda said they would try to get more mylar for the Conway papers. So I am happy that the papers will be preserved and available as a resource--eventually. Sue also agreed that it would be a great idea to send a copy of the papers to the Conway Seniors Center in Conway. This group has recently refurbished the old Wilkerson Ford Building on the corner of the main street and they have nearly daily meetings/lunches there. I am sure a lot of the people still living in Conway will find themselves or their families in the newspapers, and Sue and I thought they would enjoy having a full copy. I am going to try to do the postings in some sort of chronoligcal order, but sometimes I've found a paper out of order, so bear with me. The following is how I plan to post them. Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions. Also, contact me asap if there is something of interest to you.
