Dear Sherry, In "the Beard book" of the county's family histories there is a William Hough who seems to be the right age. He is the son of Ashford Hough and Catherine Bohanon. (Most Bohannons in Laclede County use the double "n".) Ashford was the son of Paton and Sophia Hough. Paton was born in 1790 in Virginia as was Sophia. After Paton served in the War of 1812 they moved to Ohio and then on to Missouri. The biographer, Alma Bates, says that they had 21 children but only four of the boys lived to have families of their own. If this turns out to be your family, don't confuse the Paton Hough mentioned above with another man of the area named Payton Hough. Do you think this might be your William Hough family? In the new County History book it shows your Martha Jane Atwood marrying William Huff/Hough. She was the daughter of William Atwood (born Aug. 14, 1792 in North Carolina & died 1861 in Laclede County) and his wife, Elizabeth Ann (born April 2, 1794 in Edgefield County, NC?) They had ten children most of whom were born in Lincoln County, Tennessee. This information was submitted by Laverne Stodden. I hope this gets you a jump start. Good luck in your search! My ancestors, the Zephaniah Barnes family were in and out of Laclede and Pulaski counties from about 1850-1870. I have not been able to find any siblings or parents for Zephaniah, though I have been told that Zedekiah Barnes of Texas County was a brother to my GGGrandfather, Zephaniah. I did find another Barnes family in the census as follows: 1850-Laclede County 130-130 Barnes, Sarah 52 SC Hezekiah 18 TN Elizabeth 17 TN Jasper 16 TN Sterling 14 TN My Zephaniah is from TN-He has a son named HEZEKIAH. I have found Sterling in Rockwall Texas with similar family names, such as Wiley Turner Barnes. I cannot seem to connect anything, with all these "clues". Does anyone out there know who this Sarah Barnes family is, or any of the other Barnes in the census? Your assistance would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanking you in advance. Hello All, I am working on the Hough line in Laclede County. Does anyone know who the parents were of William HOUGH, shown in the Laclede marriage below ? This is to certify that I joined together in the Holy State of Matrimony, William HOUGH and Martha ATWOOD this 29th day of July, 1855. Paton HOUGH, Justice of the Peace Thanks for reading. Does anyone recognize Samuel and Melinda Parker in Laclede County (on the census of 1880)? Two daughters are listed. The writing is hard to read, but it looks like either Lucy or Sary C. (age 2) and Delia or Delila (age 4 months). This is on page 11/70 of the Laclede Co. census. I believe Melinda Parker's maiden name may have been Stewart. I am interested in whether they raised my great aunt, Rosella Dawson (Rosella's mother was Melinda Stewarts sister - Sarah E. Stewart Dawson). One payment was made to Samuel Parker for $20 in 1884 for the board of R. S. Dawson (Rosella). This is in the probate records and guardianship records of Sarah E. Stewart Dawson and minors, Joseph Dawson (raised by Dawson side of the family) and Rosella Dawson. If the Parkers raised her from age two or three, did she take the name of Parker? I can't find a Rosella Dawson anywhere, but there is a Rosella Parker, born in 1878. However, her parents are listed as Calvin Parker and Lucy Ann Delozier Parker. Is Calvin the brother of Samuel? If so, did Calvin and Lucy Ann take in my aunt Rosella? Or, did they also have a child in 1878 named Rosella? HELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP???? Lynne - This falls in the "ideas" category. You might contact the MFA to see if they have a historian, perhaps someone who has early annotated photographs. Also, the local Grange might have some history. And, the Historical Museum at the old jail might have some old MFA records. Don't overlook the possibility that the County Library has records among there collection; as I recall from my visit there a few years ago they had quite a few boxes of stuff that did not fit real well on library shelves and the librarians were very helpful. Would the MFA have recorded anything with the county Recorder like "Fictitious Business Names"? All long shots, but perhaps someone has some records. It's the sort of search that could grow on you! MFA's operations are very different now than they were a few decades ago but it's still a thriving operation. Good luck in your research.
