He was standing on the south end of a car helping to unload sand. The switch engine threw a box car which struck the sand car, throwing WOLF backwards, running over his head and cutting off one leg, killing him instantly. He formerly lived on a farm, five miles east of town. He leaves a wife and some children. FAIR NOTES - J. HUFF has two runners... J.C. SMITH of Caledonia, will have five horses at the fair...T.O. SMITH has a trotter, pacer and two runners...G. WELDERS of Illinois, has several showy animals...J.A. TUTTLE has several head of good cattle...C.W. HARMONY will have a good display of farm machinery...Gust HAMEL's display of school desks and reclining chairs, will be worthy of notice...John M. BURKE and Gus MARTIN a number of fine chickens...Charles H. SMITH, another exhibitor of fine chickens...William BLACKWELL and Aaron COLE will have several showy and speedy horses...J.C. ALEXANDER and Charles BURKE will be on hand with several good horses...C.C. O'FALLON has two fine showy stallions. CRYSTAL and FESTUS - Charles ADAMS has secured a refreshment stand on the Fair Grounds, and will serve his friends with all table luxuries the market affords. IN MEMORIAM - Castle Hall, Royal Arch Lodge - No. 47, Knights of Pthias - De Soto, August 27, 1886 - At a regular meeting of this lodge. held August 27, 1886, this committee appointed to draft resolutions in respect to the memory of Bro.J.C. DOWD, lately deceased, reported the following, which were unanimously adopted and, upon motion, the K. of R. and S. was instructed to furnish copies to the county papers, with request that they be given publication. Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God in his wise dispensation to remove from our ranks, by the hand of death, our well beloved brother, James C. DOWD, at Pine Bluff, Ark.; one who, while with us, was highly esteemed for his moral worth and efficiency as a member, and one in whom the brotherhood places implicit confidence, therefore, be it - Resolved, that in the death of Brother DOWD this lodge is called to, and does mourn over this bereavement laid upon us by an All wise Hand. Resolved, that we deeply sympathize with his afflicted companion, who thus feels the plight of widowhood, and with his sorrowing relations and friends, and we hereby tender them our heartfelt condolence in this sad hour of trial and bereavement. Resolved, that the chapter and insignia of this lodge be draped with the usual badge of mourning. NEFF has sold his farm on Rock creek and is building a house and barn in Kimmswick. Hugh DOUGHERTY, a former business man of Kimmswick, arrived in town last Thursday, after an absence of three years. He has been residing in New York during his absence. Wednesday night at about 8:40, a shock of earthquake was felt by many of our citizens. At the National hotel it was felt so sensibly that Mr. RAUSCHENBACK examined his house all over to see if the walls were cracked. At BOWMAN's and M. MEYER's the houses were jarred very perceptibly. South of the creek, at Windsor Harbor, it was not felt at all. Kimmswick, September 6, 1885. LICENSED TO WED - Ephraim SMETZER and Annie R. JOHNSTON, Henry McNAMERA and Ella McDANIEL. Elias BURGESS raised 3096 bushels of what the past season. Some of his ground averaged 24 bushels to the acre. Mrs. Martha ENGLE, with her children, started for Texas, last Monday. She has some property at Clarkville, where her husband died, and she thinks that the boys and herself can make a living there. For longevity we believe this county will compare favorably with any country. On the 12th of March, Anna GRIFFAW, aged 104 years, and on the 24th of May, George W. MAGUIRE, aged 111 years. This is taken from the deaths filed with the county clerk. George EMPT of Rock township was indicted at last term of court for criminal intercourse with his step-daughter. The Sheriff arrested him last week and put him in jail. He threatened to use his pistol, but the Sheriff got the drop on him and soon convinced him that it would be better to quietly submit. Johnny, son of Judge Patrick BYRNE, met with a bad accident yesterday, by being kicked by a wild mule I have not heard the full particulars as yet, but understand that he was kicked about the face and had a jaw bone broken. House's Springs, Sept. 5, 1886. PROBATE COURT - The following was transacted in the Probate court last Saturday. - Guardian of Mary A. McCULLOCH was ordered to rent farm of his ward. Bond of D.M. PARK as guardian of Madaline FAU, insane, was approved.
