Hello Jefferson County researchers, Henry Frederick Tarnow born 27 November 1818 in Germany. Henry was enumerated as a Taurna, Henry 52 M W School Teacher in the 1870 Jefferson County Census. I believe he was the Henry Turner who taught school for a short term at the Maple Grove School. (Refer to page 25, Jefferson County Genealogical Society Newsletter; September 2001; Issue 24) Henry Tarnow was a cousin to Amandus CRULL of Jefferson County1. February 2, 1855: Amandus Crull and wife Mary Ann to Henry Tarnow of Jefferson County for $12.50 in township 42, Range 4 East and in section 27 of same township, south half of SE quarter, 100 acres more or less1. "The above is the Deed of sale from Amandus Crull and wife Mary Ann to Henry Tarnow of Jefferson County, Missouri, February 2, 1855. County Court House Hillsboro, Jefferson County. Deed book M, p. 342." 1 "As noted earlier, Amandus and Mary Ann sold one hundred acres to Henry Tarnow for $12.50. He was probably the cousin Amandus visited when he first arrived in St. Louis about 1841. The remaining 140 acres he and Mary Ann sold to William H. Powell for $800. I know of no reason for the great difference in the price of the land."1. Henry married NANCY SHEFFIELD 26 August 1855 in Jefferson Co., Missouri. Children of HENRY TARNOW and NANCY SHEFFIELD are: i. I found John Sheffield listed in the 1830 Jefferson County census (Ancestry.com) but do not have access to the 1840 Jefferson census. Nancy lived with Mary FROST in the 1850 Jefferson County census. They lived in District 42. Also listed in the same household were: Jackson Sheffield, age 18; Mary Sheffield, age 13; Mileta and Lorenzo RICHARDSON who were most likely the children of Absalom and Polly (Sheffield) Richardson. Isham and Lavina (ATKINSON) Sheffield lived in the District as well. I would love to hear from anyone researching the above surnames.
