I posted this to the Jefferson County message board, but, wanted to share it with the list. Also, I have the microfilm for the 1911-1914 Jefferson Democrat for another week if anyone has an obit, etc. that they want me to look for. MCP >From the Sept 9, 1913 'Jefferson Democrat' Newspaper, Hillsboro, MO Fifty years ago courts were held in the old court house, near the site of the present school house, and steps were being taken to build a new temple of justice on the site of Mrs. Steen's hotel. That hotel, in 1863, consisted of a lot of one-story rooms covering considerable space. Amor made his advent into the town about that time and married Mrs. Ed Hoeken, and he and his wife ran a store, saloon and hotel on the block across the street from the Jefferson Hotel; Abner Green, James A Beal, Sam Hendrickson and John L Thomas were the lawyers then at Hillsboro. We had only a weekly mail from Victoria and no hack service at all. When we wanted to go to St. Louis we hired a two-horse farm wagon to take us to Vicortia or else rode down horseback, taking a boy along to return with the horse. There was no newspaper nearer than St. Louis. Elias F Honey was circuit clerk and recorde, and S.A. Reppy county clerk. We then had no probate court, probate business being done in the county court. The population of Hillsboro that year was less than a hundred and the taxable wealth did not exceed $6000. Joe Hoeken is the only one, I think, who was in Hillsboro then who still lives there. Mrs. Thomas says Mrs. Williams and daughter, now in the town, were there in 1863. John H Reppy was born in Hillsboro in 1863. JOHN L THOMAS Washington D.C.
