The grand jury was composed of Alfred STEWART, foreman, O.C. BAKER, Frank BALDWIN, P.R. MANESS, Samuel MARSDEN, Henry FREESE, Thomas J. LEE, L.A. GREEN, A.T. John SHAFER, Weigand ROHE, Fred HASKE(?), Jacob SCHWEIZER, Louis WAPPLER and John F. WAPPLER, were citizens of the United States. John GUENZLING was found guilty of seducing Anna STAAT under promise of marriage, by a jury, and fined $325. WALTER, Victoria, Mo. J.B. COFFIN of Swifton, Ark., was here last Saturday. He left some lucre for the J.D. The divorce case of M.P. HARDER, Charles MERCER and Vina BIGFORD, George RUTH and Emma HEITCHER. W.P. HAMRICK, after several months' absence, called on us last week. He now resides at Houston, Texas county, Mo., and is satisfied with his new home. D.F. NORRIS reports, that on last Saturday he killed ten rattlesnakes and a red fox on Fort Hill. We want to learn now where Fort Hill is, as we want to steer clear of it. Ernest John BOISRAME, who died on the 20th ult., at his home near Frumet, was born in Paris, France, December 1, 1845. He leaves a wife, one child and other relatives to mourn his untimely death. Among the marriage licenses granted in Iron county and published in the REGISTER of last week, we notice the following - Thomas C. LEECH and Rosa B. HUGHES. In another column of the same paper we find, T.C. LEECH of the Herald is quite sick, we understand. If the thought of matrimony effects Bro. Tom that way, we pity him after he is locked up to the form of his affections. However, we congratulate the contracting parties. Miss Annie WILLIAMS, daughter of the late ex-Collector John WILLIAMS, died last Friday, at South Pueblo, Colorado, of consumption. She had gone north, accompanied by her sister, Carrie, with the hope of improving her heath, but the change of climate seems to have hastened her death only. Her remains were brought home and buried last Monday, by the side of her father's grave. She was an estimable young lady, and will be mourned by a host of friends. There are good prospects for several weddings to come off in the near future, the contracting parties living near Hillsboro, Wm. DEER, according to Mr. WELCH's say so, has built a condition to his residence, which betokens an addition to the family, and William is wearing out his shoes by tramping in an easterly direction. Hermann SIEMERS spends two thirds of his time in St. Louis, and recently bought some more land and now intends to erect a brick house. Edw. LEUTZINGER has a path of his own, and the manner in which he keeps the weeks tramped down, is evidence that no grass will grow under his No. 10s. Besides these, there is By-bye,Georgie. DEATHS and BIRTHS - The following deaths were reported the past week: Date Name Age August 14 Delia C. KLEINSCHMIDT 11 mos. GREEN of this place has been very sick the past week, but is now improving. Mrs. Senator BYRNS has also been ill, but is getting better. Miss Ella WILLIAMS, aged 27 years, died at her home, in Crystal City, on the 7th inst. Charles COOK, for many years a resident of the same place, also died. LICENSED TO WED - E.H. FROST and Ruth LEE, Charles CALLIER and Nancy Ann KING (colored), Anton DICKEMANN and Mrs. Susan MARTIN, Deidrich ULZEN and Sophia ROBENART, R.J. FROST and Emma LEE. A brakeman on the Iron Mountain railroad, named James DOTY, fell from a box car of a freight train, Monday week ago, between Bailey's Station and Hematite, and fractured his skull. Drs. FARRAR and KENNETT have their doubts about his recovery, and sent him to the hospital. Thomas MANION, living on Dry Creek, lost his six-year-old son a week ago last Monday, and as he was the baby of the family and his death so sudden, it is a sad blow to the bereaved parents and relatives. The child was on a wagon, which had 35 bushels of wheat on it, and the lad fell off, one wheel passing over his chest, crushing it frightfully. the boy lived but a short time after the accident. Quite a sensation was produced here, last Friday, by the arrest and imprisonment of Fidelo ROGERS, charged with the murder of Joseph YERGER. G.P. HERZINGER, a detective with headquarters at St. Louis, has been at work on the case for a month or two but the matter was kept very quiet and but few knew any thing about it until the arrest was made. Mr. HERZINGER had collected sufficient evidence a month ago, but on consultation with the Prosecuting Attorney, it was thought best to wait until the grand jury met. The grand jury found an indictment and capias was given to the detective, who, with Mr. T.B. MOSS, made the arrest and brought ROGERS in. The evidence against ROGERS is not yet made public. He takes it very quietly, and would not employ an attorney until told by the Court that he had to. ROGERS is the man who had two houses burned down last year, with whom the public was sympathizing so freely. a

    1. [MOJEFFER] 1922 Sulphur Springs Train Wreck
    2. I've seen articles on this before, but I just read in our Sunday paper, "Jefferson County Journal", _http://suburbanjournals.stltoday.com_ (http://suburbanjournals.stltoday.com) According to new accounts of the accident, August 5, 1922, about 90 passengers were on board Missouri Pacific Local 32 making its regular trip north from Hoxie, Ark. The steam engine stopped to take on water at Sulphur Springs. It was while making this stop that the MoPac No. 4 from Texas slammed into the rear of No. 32, causing one of the worst train wrecks in Missouri history. The noise could be heard three miles away. Mrs. Ruth Eichenberger Kite, 88 yr old of Leadwood, Mo. survived the crash when she was 3 yrs old. She and her father, Rudolph Eichenberger left Hopewell, Mo. to go to St. Louis and pick up her mother who had been visiting relatives in New Jersey. Mr. Eichenberger was killed in the crash that took 34 lives and inhured another 150 or more. Mrs. Kite and her daughter, Melba say they are interested in seeing if any other survivors of the train wreck are still alive. Survivors of the Sulphur Springs train wreck who want to tell their stories are invited to call reported, Kevin Carberry at 636-931-6636 X 221 or send emails to _kcarberry@yourjournal.com_ (mailto:kcarberry@yourjournal.com) . 1. [MOJEFFER] John Pollett
    2. Years ago, my sister and I were driving around in Washington/Jefferson County back behind the Washington State Park area and were looking for some cemeteries or graves of family members. We pulled over and talked to some lady who told us where we could walk, but to never come back there on the weekend when her father or father-in-law was there or he would throw us off the property. It had electric fence around it and my poor sister kept running into it getting zapped. We found some graves that had been destroyed. Then there was this one grave that was awesome. It was a huge, flat stone, probably 6 feet or so in length and maybe 3 feet wide with a chain around it. On the grave it said, "In memory of John Pollett, graduated in 1858 from the Scientific Department, Dartmouth College, deceased October 1, 1860, age 27 yrs. This stone is erected by his classmates." I have no idea where we were, just back behind Big River somewhere. I could kick myself for not having a camera. Didn't know if any Politte's possibly were looking for this or not. 2. In a message dated 2/23/2007 6:28:16 P.M. Central Standard Time, Manessmchr@wmconnect.com writes: Jefferson Democrat Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri 3 AUGUST 1884 Caleb and Cad SANDERS, father and son, had a preliminary examination before 'Squires GOFF and RANKIN; last Saturday, charged with felonious assault, and were held to bail - the old man in the sum of $100 and the young man at $500. Cad had had a row with Wm. NEPHEW in the morning, and in the afternoon the two went to where NEPHEW was at work with a threshing machine. Young SANDERS pulled a rock out of his pocket and knocked NEPHEW down, and the old man flourished a pistol, threatening to shoot. Thanks so much for posting this. I am so EXCITED to read this, Wm Nephew was my great grandfather. He was married to Mary Lucille DeGonia in 1877. Wm Nephew was born August 25, 1851 and was from France and I have had a hard time trying to find out a lot about him. His wife, Mary Lucille "Lucy" DeGonia's parent's were John Baptiste and Virginia Politte of Jefferson Co., Mo. Lucy and William moved to Washington County and I found in St. Joachim's records that William's parent's name were: Vieto Nephew and Hortense Dupien On William "Willie's" death certificate September 9, 1923, the informant was Virginia DeGonia and was living in DeSoto. I can't find all my notes (packrat) so I am not for sure if Virginia was William's mother-in-law cause Virginia died 1928. I was told by a cousin, Tommy Wilson, now deceased that John and Virginia lived at Big River Heights and that John was buried there also. Jack DeGonia took care of Grampa Nephew. There was some family friction and of course I am so excited I can't find the court documents right now. I know I found the documents at the Washington County, Mo. Courthouse. Wm and Lucy's had a son, John who was born 1891 and married Estella Pickett. They lived in DeSoto out on hwy 110, near hwy 67 around a curve. I remember going there as a young girl back in the 50's. Would love to hear from anyone with other information on the family Sharon (Hartzell) Smith Arnold, Jefferson Co., Mo.

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Just to remind everyone -- Charlotte's Pearls are now archived permanently at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/mo_newspaper.htm -------------------------------- Jefferson Democrat Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri Part II AUGUST 20 1884 On Monday, the 11th inst., Miss Martha CAMPBELL, a young lady of about 23 years of age, daughter of Francis CAMPBELL of Dry Creek, made a serious attempt to take her own life. He took her father's shotgun into her room, fastened it to her bed end, standing in front of it, pulled the trigger with a horse whip. The load of shot entered her left lung just above the heart. Dr. STEGMANN was called in and pronounced the wound fatal, but at last accounts there was thought to be some hope of her recovery. Her parents were of the opinion that her mind had become unhinged from brooding over a judgment that had been rendered against her, a couple of years since, for damages for slander. To a neighbor woman who stated the cause of her rash act to be the people had talked about her; but neighbors say she bore a good reputation and had not been unfavorably talked about. Later developments indicated that disappointment in love was the cause. Gus. STEGMANN, who was working in St. Louis, hearing of the affair, came home immediately and procured a license to marry Miss Martha, and the ceremony would have been performed last Thursday had not Gust's father interfered and taken him away. We have had no news from there since Friday, but hope the marriage has taken place and that all will yet be well with them. It is a very sad occurrence at best, and a terrible blow on her parents. 3. Thanks Charlotte, That is the child, though Missouri Birth & Death Records Database shows name as Thomas Allen Hensley 15d male white 03/17/1884 Jefferson, Buried Sandy Church 3/19/1884 returned by Thos Hensley, father of child. I'm trying to find out if this child was a brother to my grandfather, so was hoping to find an announcement of the birth that might show the mother's name. Guess they didn't always report the births on a regular basis. Thanks for looking for this.
