Thanks to Betty Robertson, Here is a new valid virus warning - if you receive an email with one of these files attached and no subject - DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY and the EMPTY your TRASH CAN/RECYCLE BIN. For more information go to: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.mtx.html The following is a brief description of the files to look for: Worm component The worm component makes a copy of Wsock32.dll and names it Wsock32.mtx. The Send export function of this .mtx file is then modified to point to its own code. This allows the virus to mail a copy of the worm infected with this virus to the same person to whom the user sends an email (using the same program). Here are a list of file names that this virus might use when it sends the infected worm to other people. For those files with .pif extensions, the .pif extension might not be visible in your mail program. This could have been a meeting of veterans to decide the formation of a Jefferson County post. They probably attended a meeting in St. Louis for this purpose. There would eventually be three posts in Jefferson County. The Perry V. Fletcher post # 46, located in De Soto. The J. N. Whitehead post # 171, located in Victoria. The Jno. D. Rohye post # 314, located in Cedar Hill. I know some of the names, but others on here will help me!! I will search for them, thanks! Desoto Joe/The Record Man
I believe the J. M. JACKSON in this article is my great Uncle, James Monroe JACKSON. He was a Private in Co. I, 22nd Ohio Infantry, (the same unit as his brother, George.) I wish I could say that this "Soldiers Meeting," is where my photo of "The Association of the Survivors of the Battle of Shiloh," came from, but I "think" the photo was taken at a later date. I would like to find information on James and Jane L. (MATHEWS) JACKSON's children. They are shown in the 1870 Central Township, Jefferson County, Missouri Census. The children are: John age 9, Abraham age 7, Mary age 5, Sarah age 3 and James age 2 months. James died May 25, 1876 and Jane died May 18, 1905. Hi, First I would like to say thank you to one of the friendliest and most helpful lists on the web. I Would appreciate if someone could look up the marriage of Desmas Speidel who married Lucy Ann (Schmidt/Smith) Stringfellow. They were probably married after 1880. They migrated from Jefferson Co. to Marion Co. IL. Desmas and Lucy were the parents of Frederick Albert, Hubert, Christina, Josephine, and Ledwina Speidel. It is my understanding that the Police chief of DeSoto, MO is a descendant of this family. Would like to hear from anyone researching this family. Warm Regards, Lois Branch Webevannin@aol.com
I am looking for an Obit or death notice for David Chance who died May 18, 1904. On the 1900 census he was living in Big River Township, probably around Ware, Mo. Also living in the same area where he and his wife were living were his 2 married daughters, one married to a Manion and the other married to a Huskey. There is no one still living in the family that knows where he is buried. What newspaper would be the best one to look at for this info?
Posted on: Jefferson County Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/JeffersonObits/199 Surname: Evens, Day, Gamel ------------------------- CIVIL WAR VETERAN BURIED AT HOPEWELL Military service and burial was accorded Captain William H. Evens who died Tuesday, December 18 [1934] at the home of his son, Claude, in Festus [Jefferson County], of the infirmities of old age. Funeral services were held at Hopewell, Washington County, Mo., Sunday, December 23, at 12 o'clock and conducted by Rev. Hays of St. Louis, pastor of the Methodist Church and life-long friend of the deceased. Captain William H. Evens, second son of the late John and Charlotte Evens who came to America from England in 1821, was born near Potosi, Washington County, Missouri, on December 11, 1839, where he spent practically his entire life. He was the founder of the first scotch hearth smelter lead furnace in America. On September 25, 1861, Hamilton R. Gamel, then governor of the state, reposing the utmost confidence in the fidelity, patriotism, ability and valor of Mr. Evens, commissioned him Second Lieutenant of the Hopewell Rifle Company, Fourth Regiment of the Seventh Division of the Missouri Militia. He was commissioned Captain of Company C, 31st Regiment of Missouri Infantry Volunteers, by Gov. Gamel on August 5, 1862, and mustered into service on the 25th day of September of the same year. Authorized by the secretary of war and signed by C. McClure, Adjutant General, he was honorably discharged on August 8, 1864. He was appointed and commissioned Colonel of the 32nd Regiment in the Enrolled Militia of the State of Missouri by Governor Willard P. Hall, to rank from Oct. 7, 1864, and empowered to discharge the duties of said office according to law. He participated in the battles of Chickasaw, Baou, Jackson, the Siege of Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Ringgold, and the Atlanta Campaign. He served Washington County as their representative in the 46th, 48th, 49th and 50th general assembly, and was a charter member of the Henry C. Beckell Post No. 348, Mineral Point, Missouri, and the Officers of Tennessee, which he attended as long as there was a quorum. After his return home he engaged in the lumber business, then in flour milling in 1876, which he continued until retiring in 1923, when he moved to Herculaneum with his son, Claude, with whom he made his home, and moving to Festus in 1930. On September 21, 1871, he was united in marriage to Eliza J. Day, daughter of George and Rosina Day who came from Lincolnshire England, and settled in Potosi in 1841. To this union were born seven children, two of whom, Israel and Walter, with his wife preceded him in death. He is survived by five children, Harry E., J. Sherman, G. Claude, Mrs. Mary Gamel and Robert W., sixteen grandchildren. Captain Evens often visited his son Harry and his family who lived in Flat River until they moved to St. Louis about a year ago and had many friends in the Lead Belt who with the News extend sympathy to the bereaved family. [The Lead Belt News, Friday, December 28, 1934]
Today I was invited over to a gentleman's home & he allowed me to photograph his Great Grandfathers Civil War picture & another when he was in his old age. The great thing was, this man was an officer & in the picture he is holding his sword, well this relative then produced the sword!! Completely intact & in fantastic shape. It was indeed a pleasure to handle this. I also have been getting many calls about Jefferson County Cemeteries & today, found 4 elusive graves, plus the locations of more soon to follow. Then the day turned a little sour, I had to go to work :~( Desoto Joe/The Record Man
I have just completed transcribing obits for the Shaner and Bequette surnames. These are connected to the Byington, Pinkston, Pigg and other surnames of St. Francis and St. Genevieve counties in MO. If you would like a copy, please email me at pochi@usmo.com and tell me if you need it as a text (.txt) file or as an MS Word (.doc) file. Ann
This is the last one for the night folks! Jefferson County MO Leader 20 July 1866 #29 "Letter from Judge Hendrickson, Editor Jefferson County Leader: I see that my name is mentioned in your paper in connection with the nomination of a candidate for Representative in the next Legislature. I stand ready to make common cause with the Radicals of this State and County, and will cheerfully accept this nomination, should I appear to be the choice of the party through their Convention. Our common suffering for which we battled forms a bond between the Unionists of old Jefferson and myself which shall never be broke; and in whatever position their will shall place me--either as a private in the loyal host, or as a leader in the coming struggle--I shall continue to serve them, and our beloved country, with all my heart, mind and strength. We were together in battle; we are still alike in principle; and we will rally together at the ballot box. I voted for Mr. Lincoln in 1860; I stood with him through his entire administration; and the same moderate and just principles will continue to be my guide. Very truly yours, William Hendrickson
Jefferson County Leader 13 July 1866 No 28 "Representative in the General Assembly ..... We therefore call general attention to the propriety of nominating Judge William Hendrickson as the Union candidate for Representative. reared in Jefferson county; maintaining through an active and useful life an unspotted personal character; known among the people as an upright Christian gentleman; a man not ashamed to work with head or hands; true to his country and the laws, - he is today our foremost man. In our acquaintance with Judge Hendrickson, we have been charmed by his courtesy, won by his truth, and led by his wisdom and moderation. On the question of internal improvement, Judge Hendrickson's record is clear. He has steadfastly favored the building of both railroads and improved highways in our county. Superior to local prejudice, he has sought, by a liberal public policy, to secure the equal improvement of all parts of the county. Foremost to welcome emigration, and in every enterprise for the public good, no man can bring accusation against him. Should Judge Hendrickson decide to become a candidate, after careful consideration, we trust it will be with the distinct determination to canvass the whole county, and meet the political gatherings. We wish him to impress his thoughtful and considerate vies upon the public. He will have nothing to be ashamed of or to conceal. Shall we have a response?"
Jefferson Co., MO Leader 13 July 1866 No 23 Judge [William] Hendrickson gave an address to the teachers "To secure the conversion of the children--to bring them to a knowledge of the highest truths of religion--was the leading idea of Judge Hendrickson's remarks. He would have the children understand the full value of their opportunities and the extent of their responsibility"
