As before please summit this article to any web site so as others may be helped. Two More County Adoptions Found While running deeds on cemetery locations at the Recorder of Deeds Office at the Jefferson County Courthouse I came upon two more adoption “deeds”. First, recorded in book 9 at page 356, “… Charles F. Lee of Jefferson County (adopts)… and Luella Maria Hughes, an infant girl of the same place (Jefferson County) daughter of Thomas Hughes and his deceased wife, and about the age of seventeen (Thomas)…”, standard “deed” of adoption. The second, on May 5th, 1907, recorded in book 63 at page 49, “…Eliza Ehlers and John Ehlers her husband of the County of Jefferson (adopt Susan) and John B. Gamache and Cora E. Gamache his wife of Jefferson County, parents by adoption of Susan Ruth Sutton, a minor, see deed of adoption at Recorder’s Office, City of St. Louis on July 25 1905, in book 1862 at page 177, also March 10th, 1906 in book 1895 at page 473…” What I believe is happening here, as I don’t have access to the St. Louis City records, is Eliza & John Ehlers are adopting a child that was adopted twice before, first recorded in book 1862 second recorded in book 1895. This also is a standard “deed” of adoption and the document was recorded, as any standard “deed” for land would be. It states that “…for $1.00 and the love and….”. If I am correct this child may have been a problem child, being adopted three times within a 22 month period. It appears like what would be done with a foster child of today. Herein lies another problem for genealogical researchers, if I am correct and the above was adopted twice, then her name my have been changed. Thus her “real” name may not be “Sutton” but have been changed to that by the first adoptive parent. You would have to look at the two previously denoted deeds. And finally be aware that any “Susan Ruth” you are looking for may not in fact be a “Gamache”. I got a copy of my ancestors' certificate through the Missouri Archives. It was a Xerox copy not a real certificate, but it was only $.50, as I recall. -Jo
(I already sent this information, but, I think I accidentally sent it only to cindyh instead of the whole list as I had intended. At least, I didn't get it back myself as a list subscriber. So, if you've seen this already, ignore.) In case you haven't made a request to the Missouri State Archives in a while, they have a new procedure and rate schedule. I do not think they are do any mailings on this, only letting people know as they make new requests. Basically, if you are out-of-state they now charge $15.00 per "letter". All patrons can send four letters per year with four requests on each (this is from memory). The in-state researchers pays only for copies and out-of-state for copies and the research fee. So, if anyone on the list from Missouri doesn't use the archives service and want to 'loan me' their name and address four times a year, please let me know. Ha Ha. I spend all of my free money (as if there was such a thing with two kids in day care at $140/week) on death certificates, books, on-line subscriptions, etc., I spend way too much as is!! I guess driving to Jefferson City and getting to look at anything I want without a long wait is looking more attractive. Anyone in that area want to babysit a very laid-back 4 year old and a high-maintenance 20 month-old? I didn't think so ; ) Marianne in Mountain Home, Arkansas Josweeney@aol .com To: MOJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com cc: 01/11/01 Subject: [MOJEFFER] Marriage certificates 03:34 PM I got a copy of my ancestors' certificate through the Missouri Archives. If you have access to a Family History Center, marriage records are available from 1825-1951 and marriage certificates from 1836-1948. The certificates have only recently been microfilmed. Rick Saunders http://genealogypro.com/fsaunders.html

If you visit the county clerk's web page (http://www.jeffcomo.org/clerk/serv/gen.html), you'll notice that all queries for genealogical research are referred to the state archives (http://mosl.sos.state.mo.us/rec-man/arch.html). However, if you wish to walk into the court house, you may be able to see the records. The Jefferson County Library, Northwest Branch has those records on microfilm, as well. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that before.... does the Jefferson Co Courthouse have the marriage certificates from the 1880s? Would love to have a copy of my grandparents'! Do we just write to the County Clerk's office? What information would we need to give (I think we have the right date for their marriage), and, of course, what would be the fee? TIA!
