Found the Blackwell Cemetery today. It is about a mile or two north of the town of Blackwell. It is surrounded by an iron fence & all stones are in it except one located between the fence & the railroad tracks. There are others buried here that I could not make out & because their markers are gone. James Palmer / April 3, 1831 - November 16, 1887. (located outside the fence) Mattie A. / Daughter of C.P. & M (Mary).J. Epperly. February 3, 1878 - July 25, 1880. William A. / Son of C.P. & M (Mary).J. Epperly. April 16, 1863 - July 23, 1875. August 24, 1870 - January 4, 1871. ( then it has 1 year, 8 months, which makes no sense.) Albert A. / Son of Aquilla & Dollie Blackwell. May 14, 1881 - October 30, 1893. Emmars / Daughter of Aquilla & Dollie Blackwell. Died October 30, 1831. 2 years, 11 days. Minnie J. / Daughter of Aquilla & Dollie Blackwell. Died November 21, 1882. In your research has anyone came across these burials and what cemeteries? Geo. W. Hughs (or one of the above) b. abt. 1809 in TN. Married Evaline (Cadwallader) Armstrong on 09, April 1851 in Jefferson Co. Evaline was born in PA. Have been unable to find out when they died or where buried. Assumed they died in Jefferson Co. Last census they can be found in is 1880. Any help will be appreciated. LLOYD CARTER
These are cemeteries I visited in the last two weeks. I am not sure if they were reported by other persons so I will list the monuments I photographed. The first one I feel will be called Horine Cemetery, although I have not found a registered name. As Horine has no "official" cemetery and this 1/2 acres size cemetery is just next to the original town of Horine and doesn't look like a family plot, I am calling it Horine Cemetery for now. This cemetery was shown to me by Sharon Smith whose Grandmother is buried there. The Burris family plot within the cemetery has four granite corner post but the fencing is gone, Samuel and Burris carved into corner post. I don't know if this denotes two family plots, i.e.. Samuels and Burris's. Aurther E. Burris, Born Jan. 17 1883, Died March 28, 1913, 24 IN Co. D., "Our loved one", located within the corner post, broken monument. Amanda Elizabeth Lattimore, Born Nov. 15, 1878, Died July 6, 1923, "Gone but not forgotten", "Our Mother" across top of broken monument. Information supplied by Sharon Smith, whose grandmother is Amanda. Her maiden name was Austin, she lived in Horine until the home place burned. She was a "healer" who took care of blacks. Probably a midwife. Earl Lattimore, a baby born dead either June 30 or July 1, 1923 is also reported to be buried here, however no monument found. There were many depressions denoting graves, very overgrown, some field stones. _________________________________________________________________ The second cemetery was shown to me by John Sapper and is in our records as the Herrington Family Cemetery. This is not the Herrington Cemetery in Pevely. This one is between Hillsboro and Cedar Hill off BB Hgy. Joshua Herrington, Born February 8, 1811, Died Sept. 9, 1886, "In memory of", two clasp hands within circle at top. Lucinda, wife of, J. Herrington, Born June 20, 1817, Died Jan. 1, 1874, this is on the back of broken Joshua monument. E. Hirsch, De Soto, Monument Maker name on stone. Nancy E., wife of, James R. Herrington, Born April 18, 1832, Died Jan. 8, 1901, toppled monument. Field stone with hand carved lettering, my best guess of some of the words is Linda Herrington died 1876 aged 38 years 6 months. Extremely hard to read. Toppled lying flat. Martha A., wife of, B. F. Herrington, Died June 23, 1884, Aged 23 yrs 12 ds. Two clasp hands inside circle at top. She would have been born 6-11-1861. These were the only monuments found. Cemetery in woods, many depressions, some unreadable stones, about 1/8 acre in size. ___________________________________________________________ The third and final cemetery was also shown to me by John Sapper. No name found yet. Single 7 foot spike stone with carving on all four sides. Top of monument dismounted and lying along side. Heir Ruhen, Jacob Hilpertshauser, Geb. April 22, 1839, Gest. April 25, 186, Below on the same side, Joseph Bleiker, Geb. Feb. 28, 1806, Gest. Dec. 22, 1876, both on side 1. Side two, Heir Ruht., Die Familie Bleiker. Side three, Heir Ruht, John Hilpertshauser, Geb. Juli 28, 1832, Gest. Oct 6, 1880, and a German verse below. Side four, Heir Ruhen, Barbara Hilpertshauser, geboren JSLER, Geb. Nov. 9, 1799, Gest. Oct. 27, 1875, below on same side, Elias Hilpertshauser, Geb. Juni. 21, 1807, Gest. Nov. 2, 1879. Elias Hilpertshauser, first purchased the ground from the U. S. Government, Bleikers show ownership on the 1876 & 1898 Atlas'. Can anyone translate the German and email it to me. ____________________________________________________ Listed in our records a Vineyard Cemetery, one monument, shown to me by Albert Fults; Lucinda, wife of, Wm. Vineyard, Born July 30, 1818, Died Aug 22, 1876, "Rest in Peace", footstone LV, Information from property owner, there were three other stones William Vineyard b. 1821, Sarah Vineyard b. 1842, Steven Vineyard b. 1846. Family plot, extremely overgrown, about 20x20 in size. _______________________________________________________ Last, I am currently working on cemetery locations for the Historical Society. If you know the location of a cemetery in Jefferson County please email me so I can record its location and update our records. Thanks! Dave Hallemann Sleuth@cat2.com

Posted on: Jefferson County Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/JeffersonObits/246 Surname: WHALEY, VANHOOK ------------------------- Sharon, the WHALEY surnamed sounded familiar to me, so I checked my index. My ancestor Mary "Polly" VanHook married John Lee, they resided in Harrison Co., KY before moving to Jefferson Co., MO. Mary's brother Archelaus VANHOOK married a JEMIMA WHALEY b. 1776 in Loudon Co., VA. Since Mary and John moved to MO, posssibly the WHALEY family that settled there were also of the Loudon Co., VA family. This is all the information that I have, and probably not much help except if you haven't looked in Loudon Co., VA, you might look there for your WHALEY family. Archelaus VANHOOK and JEMIMA WHALEY VANHOOK both died in Montgomery Co., IN.
Posted on: Jefferson County Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/JeffersonObits/244 Surname: WHALEY, GREEN, DAY, FISHER ------------------------- Does anyone have any info on the WHALEY Family who lived between Bonne Terre and DeSoto? This was my grandparents, James and Mary Elizabeth DAY WHALEY. My father was Arthur Harold WHALEY born Jan 18, 1916, died October 12, 1999. I can't seem to find anything in Jefferson County about this family. We have our Reunion there every year, but I can't find any records about family in county. How about records of the Primrose Baptist Church? is it in Jefferson Co or St. Francios County? I know they are buried there, so there has to be records somewhere? Is there any relatives out there? Sincerely, Sharon timetraveler@socket.net
Posted on: Jefferson County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Jefferson/430 Surname: McCormack, McMullin ------------------------- Karen, the only info I have is on a few of the McCormacks who married into my McMullin family. I am not a descendant of any of them. Jefferson Co., is where the reunions took place. The Reunion Book, which is in my possession, is also at the library in DeSoto. Good luck in your search. Ellen
I stopped by Simpson's Hill Cemetery today & here are those stones that remain. There are many more buried here. They used just stones to mark the graves of many & the stones remain, but the identities are long ago lost. There may exist records that place people here, but no way to find out just where in the cemetery they are placed. This cemetery has been neglected for a long time. Mary Williams / December 24, 1844 - November 25, 1895. Henry Williams / August 16, 1871 - July 5, 1900. John Williams / December 28, 1876 - October 5, 1886. Mayfield ( Just a bottom base stone is here with this name. Someone has removed the headstone with the interred information ) Hanah Adiine or Adline Davis / March 18, 1859 - December 5, 1877. ( There are a few stones around this grave & a crypt. It leaves one to believe that these are other members of the Davis family. John R. Davis / 1827 - October 8, 1864 is buried here, but no stone bears his inscription. He was killed by members of Company B. 47th Missouri Infantry near Maddox Mill on the Big River.) Mary McCulloch / December 16, 1829 - May 26, 1899. James R. McCulloch / Died January 23, 1885 in his 55th year. L.J. - Husband of E. Henry / February 28, 1848 - August 14, 1891. Hulda May - Daughter of L.J. and Emily Henry / Died March 10, 1885. 10 years, 2 months. Mary A. - Daughter of L.J. and Emily Henry / Died May 20, 1885. 3 years, 5 months. Wm. Paul - Son of L.J. and Emily Henry / Died July 22, 1884. 2 months, 11 days. (Emily may be here also, but I could not find a stone marked with her name.) Hester Wilson / January 30, 1832 - February 14, 1913. Isaac E. Wilson / August 16, 1834 - July 2, 1891. James Wilson / December 15, 1855 - May 19, 1894. 38 years, 5 months, 4 days. ( There are probably more Wilsons in this part, because some are big stones that are off the base & I was unable to lift them back up. There could be other names etched on the bottom of these stones. ) Henry Pruett / Died November 8, 1884 in his 55th year. Desoto Joe/The Record Man

Go to http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ , click on "search land patents", fill in zip code and then put in Missouri for searching. There were 8 or 9 John Gamble's. The first one listed was confirmed in 1828 for his heirs out of the St Louis land office. Good hunting. Dear listers, Thanks for the help so far - Maness, Hallemann, Loretta and Hank Goehring, the Desoto Library staff, and the Kimmswick Historical Society. I am still trying to establish which Arnold family my ggrandmother Mary or Maria Arnold came from. Any help would be appreciated. Tramping the local cemeteries with Hank and Loretta yielded no graves for Mary or John W. Naumann. I think his is strange as the Jefferson Democrat reports that Mrs. John Naumann was buried in the nearby cemetery. Thanks to all, judith.silbaugh@worldnet.att.net
