In a message dated 2/21/01 9:31:44 PM, MOJEFFER-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << Are these perhaps actual French immigrants? Does anyone have a basic knowledge of the immigration patterns into this area? >> Ste. Genevieve, Missouri was the first settlement in Missouri founded in the 1700s by French Canadian trappers and Jesuit priests who travelled down the riverways from Montreal, to Detroit and down into Peoria, Illinois. They ended at Kaskaskia, Prairie du Rocher and Fort Chartres where a mission was founded by Jesuit priests. Many of the people later migrated into the areas around Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois and other counties which were rich in minerals that were mined by the French. The area around Old Mines and Potosi still have descendants from the original settlers of Ste. Genevieve but many of them moved into the Jefferson County area too, Desgagne and Politte, to name the two that I am related to. (The Politte name also carried a dit name, Robert or Raubert.) If you live around the eastern counties of Missouri you will be quite familiar with French Canadian names that are a great part of our history. There is super book about the French Canadians by Father Yealy called, simply, Ste. Genevieve. It is out of print but the best book of the history of the French. Becky

Hello all, I have transcribed a statement from the Board of Land Commissions Missouri. I was hoping that someone could tell me about some of the familie named. It sounds like these families were part of group that settled in this area (Merrimack - Negro fork) at the same time. I am hoping to determine if my John Pyatt came to Jefferson County with them in a group and where they all came from. I can't help but noticing all the VERY french names on this list. Are these perhaps actual French immigrants? Does anyone have a basic knowledge of the immigration patterns into this area? Anyone have a guess as to the word immediately preceeding the word 'claimant' on the last line of the statement? Thanks, MCP "30 Jan 1809 pg 451 (reference Book 1 pg 499) James Richardson assignee of the inhabitants of Mardais de Liard claiming 1000 arpents of land. James McDonald sworn says that about 11 years ago Francois Honore, Louis Honore, Baptiste A???, ?Noel Honore, Antoine Braden?, John Pyatt, George Shultz, Phillip Shultz, Soloman Pettit (and that there was another house said to belong to Jonas Sparks) inhabited and cultivated on the land, claimed, had gardens, got their fencing and firewood off said tracts, cultivated that year and lived there and cultivated for several years. witness believes 3 or 4 years consecutively, claimant inhabited and cultivated on said land all this time with the rest; and was a ?syndic? claimant has continued to inhabit and cultivate the same ever since. Laid over for decision."

Why not try my suggestion: I'm not waiting for questions from descendants. I've created a Memories file on my computer and when I remember something interesting I'm typing it in there. I plan to give copies to each of our children. I think the Memory Box is a very good idea & there is probably a lot of us out there that wished we had thought of that when some of our older relatives were alive to answer some of our (brick wall) questions. Bobbie

I agree Bobbie, it's too late for me to do that now but maybe we can persuade some of the younger descendants to do this. So many answers are gone forever for me. Unfortunately, it looks like that no one in my family has any interest. The only hope is that a grandchild will show an interest, eventually. Nancy C. Peeples, 74, who was engaged in the plumbing business in Casper for a number of years and later was city electrical and plumbing inspector, died early Saturday morning at Natrona Memorial Hospital. His death followed a lengthy illness. Mr. Peebles was born May 25, 1884, at De Soto, Missouri. He and Susan Jane (Jeanette/Jennie) Triplett were married November 10, 1910, in Lincoln, Nebraska. They moved to Wyoming from Lincoln in June, 1916, homesteading in Johnson County, and came to Casper in 1921. Mr. Peebles was engaged in the plumbing trade most of his life.
