Lloyd and Rick: Thanks so much for the info--you have "made my day" so to speak. I have looked for info on these names at our library and fallen into the trap of expecting their names to be spelled as I think they should be.......and done the same thing when searching the list archives.......... I've learned a lot and need to think about the census info some more........Frances Granville/Glanvill/Glanville and William Reed/Reid were probably married around 1862 (since their oldest son William was 8 in the 1870 census). I have looked on the marriage site for Jefferson, Washington, St.Francois counties..............I will look again using the alternate spellings. In the 1850 census James and Frances Granville had a son named James, b. Eng, age 10.........he is not with them on the 1860 census, therefore he must have married or died or struck out on his own........his mom Fannie Granville was still living in 1880, and is probably with one of her children........james or Cora maybe. Anyway, I have a lot of searching to fill in blanks........do you know of any mine accidents that James, the father and James, the son might have been involved in. Have you seen any info of this type? Once more, thanks for all of your help........it is most appreciated. My next jump with these families is back to England and I'm afraid it will be a difficlt one Carol PS-Lloyd, was William Reed in your listings--he died in 1891.
Carol- I found several entries in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses: I can't find your William Reed/ Reid in 1860, but I did find James and Frances Granville. The spelling is a bit off. >From the 1860 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Missouri; Valle Township, Avoca Post Office, houshold #22, taken August 19, 1860: Glanvill, James; age- 44, male, married, occupation- miner, real estae- $1500, born- England ---- Frances; age- 45, female, born- England ---- Frances; age- 14, female, born- MO, in school ---- Cora; age 12, female, born- MO, in school ---- William; age- 9, male, born- MO, in school ---- Elizabeth; age- 5, female, born- MO In 1870, I found both households: >From the 1870 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Missouri; Valle Township, Hillsboro post Office, household #132, taken August 29, 1870: Glanville, James; age- 54, male, occuption- farmer & lead miner, real estate- $1500, personal property- $440, born- England, parents foreign born ---- Fannie; age- 54, female, occupation- keeps house, born- England, parents foreign born ---- William; age- 16, male, at home, born- MO, parents foreign born ---- Elizabeth; age- 12, female, at home, born- MO, parents foreign born >From the 1870 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Missouri; Valle Township, Hillsboro post Office, household #165, taken August 30, 1870: Reid, William; age- 34, male, occupation- blacksmith, no real estate, personal property- $300, born- England, parents foreign born ---- Frances; age- 25, female, occupation- keeps house, born- MO, parents foreign born ---- William; age- 8, male, at home, born- MO, father foreign born ---- Anna; age-5, female, at home, born- MO, father foreign born ---- George F.; age- 2, male, at home, born- MO, father foreign born Smith, Wallace; age- 15, male, occupation- blacksmith, born IL In 1880, I don't find the Granvilles, but I did find the Reed household: >From the 1880 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Missouri, Valle Township De Soto, household #247, taken on Lewis Street, apparantly on June 4, 1880: Reed, William; male, age- 45, head of household, married, occupation- blacksmith, born- ENG, parents born- ENG ----Francis; female, age- 35, wife, married, occupation- keeping house, born- MO, parents born- ENG ---- William; male, age- 17, son, occupstion- laborer, born- MO, father born- ENG, mother born- MO ---- Annie; female, age- 15, daughter, at home, in school, born- MO, father born- ENG, mother born- MO ---- George; male, age- 13, son, at home, in school, born- MO, father born- ENG, mother born- MO ---- John; male, age- 10, son, at home, in school, born- MO, father born- ENG, mother born- MO ---- Alice; female, age- 6, daughter, in school, born- MO, father born- ENG, mother born- MO ---- May; female, age- 3, daughter, born- MO, father born- ENG, mother born- MO
I am searching for information about Fannie (Frances) Granville , d July 30, 1885. She is buried in Valle Mines cemetery.......she and husband James Granville are listed in the 1850 census for Jefferson County, both born in England, she in 1815, he in 1814. I have found no further info on James.........any Granvilles listed would be most helpful. Their daughter, Frances, married William James Reed..........he died in 1891...........a look-up for him would also be helpful...........he is my husband's ggrandfather. Thank you for your kind offer. Carol in Indep., MO
I do have the 1883-1892 death records put out by the Jefferson Co. Genealogical Society if anyone needs a look up for these years. Lloyd
Big Thanks to Mona and Bettye for clearing up the confusion with the new area codes for reaching the various Clerks offices. I have a information from the JCGS publication Jefferson County Death Records 1883-1892 which lists some particulars on an ancestor including name, date of death, age, place of birth, cause of death and location (Jefferson County.) Would a death certificate contain additional data from this time period? Hoping to find out something on this person's parents. Thanks for all the help :) Tracy Lewis Anchorage, AK
Dear list, I'm trying to contact the Jefferson County Clerk's office about current fees for ordering death certificates and the phone number listed for county offices doesn't appear to be working. Does anyone have the current phone number/address for the Clerk's Office? Also, does anyone know if the information provided on the death certificate is identical to what is listed in the JCGS publication on Death Records 1883-1892? Hoping to find out a little more on parents.... Thanks so much, Tracy Lewis Anchorage, AK
There have been several changes in our area codes over the last several years. Current phone number for Recorder of Deeds (who handles marriage licenses, and therefore I think also death records) is 636-797-5414. Good luck! According to the 2001 Legal Directory, I have the following phone numbers which might come in handy: Clerk, County Commission (County Clerk?) 636-797-5477 Clerk, Circuit Court 636-797-5443 Recorder of Deeds - 636-797-5419 Their area code was recently changed so perhaps that's what's causing your problems. Posted on: Jefferson County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Jefferson/10484 Surname: John Votaw, Henry Votaw, Isaac Votaw ------------------------- These three brothers probably came to Jefferson County around the year 1803 from Green County, KY. John Votaw (Jr) married Jane Inks 9 Apr 1793 in Green County, KY. Her brother, William Inks, came along with them. Henry Votaw, married Ebby Link on December 13, 1796 in Green County, Kentucky. They also lived in Bon Homme Twp., Saint Louis County, MO first, I believe - or maybe that particullar area was later a part of Meramac Twp., Jefferson Co., Mo. Isaac Votaw, we believe came with them and then went on to Texas. Any information will be greatly appreciated. We know that Henry applied in May 1, 1824 for and was granted land : (1) sw, Section 5, Township 43-N, Range 4-E in Jefferson County/St. Louis Couty (2) NW, Section 8, Township 43-N, Range-E, Jefferson?St. Louis Counties. John Votaw applied for and was granted land May 1, 1824: (1) S1/2, Section 32, Township 44-N, Range 4-E in St. Louis County, MO. Can any one help with their descendants??
