Be sure you let us know when you get your site up and running. Would love to see it. I have photos of the Jasper and Newton Eoff graves, as well as a number of other Eoffs. Would love to see what you have. Jerri Eoff Sudderth in MN
I am happy to see there is so much interest in Bethlehem Cemetery. This last week I took more than a hundred pictures of the earliest graves and had I not run out of time I would have taken more. My intent is to create a web site of the cemetery showing the individual grave markers and a panorama picture of the entire cemetery. This is a long range goal because of the travel involved, I live in Texas, and the expense. I will have a site up and running this summer using the pictures I have at present. They are being developed now. Desoto Joe is right that many graves markers are missing. While at Lewis's Cafe in St. Clair this weekend a long lost Reed cousin told me that vandals had gotten into the cemetery and taken or destroyed several grave stones. I don't know how long ago this happened. There were many Manion and Eoff graves taken in the first batch of pictures, so those families will find the incomplete web site interesting. I could not read some of the inscriptions and skipped those that were not legible. However, if there was any writing visible I have a picture of the earliest stones. We need to collaborate on this effort and find or create a history, copy and record the cemetery records, and because Desoto Joe has done such a wonderful job transcribing other cemeteries, encourage him to focus on this one. The result would be a complete history in print and picture of our early Jefferson Co. pioneers.
When I was in Farmington in the spring of 2000, the librarian had a photo of a group of unidentified Civil War veterans. I realize this is not in Jefferson County, but photos do travel. She was showing the photo to everyone who came in for genealogy research to see if she could establish identities. This could or could not be related to your question. -Jo Sweeney

I have been there many times & have a few Civil War soldiers from there. The one thing I know for a fact, is that there are many more buried there that have no stones remaining to mark their graves. I believe that some stones are laying right under the surface, but are covered by earth, so they are not seen as one walks the area. Desoto Joe/The Record Man
Martha, With respect to the records of Bethlehem Cemetery... I was there about 7 years ago and spent some time with the elderly caretaker, who lived about a mile down the road from the cemetery and church. I do not recall his name...and had a heck of a time locating it to begin with as the church has (had) no phone. There were, he and his wife told me, no written records except what the two of them had produced. Several years before, they had developed a plot map, with info recorded from each stone, amking where they thought other, unmarked graves were. (I recall they said they had even plumbed possible plots to determine if vaults or coffins were there.) Then they added new information as burials occurred. They generously lent me the original map when I went out to locate the graves of my great-grandparents (Henry Martin EOFF and Lucresa NULL EOFF) and my 2xgreatgrandfather (Jasper EOFF). Unfortunately, I didn't have the understanding then of what I had rolled up in my hands! Were that to happen today, I would have located a copier someplace in Grubbville and environs! Is anyone else researching this McColloch line? He was born in 1807 in Big River, served as Constable, Deputy Sheriff, Sheriff, State Legislature and Judge. He was married twice and was survived by his wife and 4 children. I think he might be the James McColloch who was father to my g grandmother Minerva McColloch Manion. I would be happy to exchange information Martha Benson
I just received the wonderful book put out by the Jefferson County Gen. Society, Deaths From Jefferson County Newspapers 1866-1920 and now I have a couple of questions. The notices were taken from the Leader and the Jefferson Democrat . Is the Jefferson Democrat the Hillsboro newspaper and what town is the Leader from? In looking at the book, I know that not all death notices are in it . I have looked at the Hillsboro newspaper for a particular death notice and it is not in it and if the Leader covered the Morse Mill area also, I would like to know where to send for microfilm for the year 1903. One other question, I have been avidly reading all the cemetary information posted by Desoto Joe, but since I know that 3 of the burials I am looking for, probably in the Bethleham Church cemetary, are in unmarked graves, I am wondering if that church has kept written records of people buried there. I think most of my Manion family were members of that church and I would also like to know if anyone has written a history of the church and if it is available. Thanks Martha Benson
