    2. The Rushing Family
    3. Hello Jefferson County researchers, Henry Frederick Tarnow born 27 November 1818 in Germany. Henry was enumerated as a Taurna, Henry 52 M W School Teacher in the 1870 Jefferson County Census. I believe he was the Henry Turner who taught school for a short term at the Maple Grove School. (Refer to page 25, Jefferson County Genealogical Society Newsletter; September 2001; Issue 24) Henry Tarnow was a cousin to Amandus CRULL of Jefferson County1. February 2, 1855: Amandus Crull and wife Mary Ann to Henry Tarnow of Jefferson County for $12.50 in township 42, Range 4 East and in section 27 of same township, south half of SE quarter, 100 acres more or less1. "The above is the Deed of sale from Amandus Crull and wife Mary Ann to Henry Tarnow of Jefferson County, Missouri, February 2, 1855. County Court House Hillsboro, Jefferson County. Deed book M, p. 342." 1 "As noted earlier, Amandus and Mary Ann sold one hundred acres to Henry Tarnow for $12.50. He was probably the cousin Amandus visited when he first arrived in St. Louis about 1841. The remaining 140 acres he and Mary Ann sold to William H. Powell for $800. I know of no reason for the great difference in the price of the land."1. Henry married NANCY SHEFFIELD 26 August 1855 in Jefferson Co., Missouri. Children of HENRY TARNOW and NANCY SHEFFIELD are: i. Mary Margaret Tarno born 05 May 1857 in MO, and died 09 August 1923 in Woodruff Co., AR. She married William Andrew LINDSEY 17 December 1879 in Woodruff County, Arkansas ii. John William Tarno born 29 March 1858 in MO, and died 01 September 1926 in Kaufman, Kaufman, TX. He married Donnie Isabella LINDSEY 14 December 1887. iii. Charles Henry Tarno, b. 30 May 1859, MO - (1880 census). iv. Albert Lorenzo Tarno, b. 05 September 1860; d. 28 August 1861. v. Amandus M. Tarno born 20 January 1862 in Atchison, KS. He married Callie LINDSAY 11 August 1886 in Woodruff County, Arkansas vi. Andrew Jackson Tarno, b. 30 January 1863; d. 13 October 1866. vii. James Augustus (Gussie) Tarno, b. 14 January 1865; d. 16 March 1878, "died at 14" M.E. Harding. viii. Henry Edward Tarno born 09 August 1866 in MO, and died 31 December 1933 in Flint, Genesee, MI. He married (1) Lille MAY 27 May 1892 in Jackson County, Arkansas (2) Minnie O. GREER 24 February 1899. ix. Nancy Meleta Tarno born 05 January 1869, and died 30 December 1945 in Center Point, Howard, Arkansas. She married Joseph TOLBERT 16 February 1896 in Jackson County, Arkansas x. Agness Tarno, b. 09 January 1871; d. Abt. 1873, "died at 21/2 years old " M.E. Harding. Nancy Sheffield was born 05 March 1834 in Missouri and was possibly the daughter of JOHN SHEFFIELD. I found John Sheffield listed in the 1830 Jefferson County census (Ancestry.com) but do not have access to the 1840 Jefferson census. Nancy lived with Mary FROST in the 1850 Jefferson County census. They lived in District 42. Also listed in the same household were: Jackson Sheffield, age 18; Mary Sheffield, age 13; Mileta and Lorenzo RICHARDSON who were most likely the children of Absalom and Polly (Sheffield) Richardson. Isham and Lavina (ATKINSON) Sheffield lived in the District as well. I would love to hear from anyone researching the above surnames. 1. [MOJEFFER] Threshers from Plattin
    2. Jared E. Billings
    3. Marianne: In 1861 the Missouri State Guard (MSG) was formed. It was a state militia whose purpose was to defend the state against any invading Federal troops. It was allied with, but not part of, the Confederacy. I am not absolutely certain but I believe the vast majority of the men from Missouri with southern sympathies in 1861 enlisted in the MSG rather than the regular Confederate Army. By mid 1962 when the MSG had disbanded most of the men in the MSG had since joined the Confederate Army. I do not know for certain but I believe it to be possible, if not likely, that the "Threshing Crew" from Plattin Township joined the MSG originally. I am going to share with you information on the MSG units that were raised in full or in part from Jefferson County. Perhaps you have, or can find, information that would confirm or deny this. I do not know how much you know about the MSG so I will first give you an overview. It was commanded by former Missouri Governor Major General Sterling Price. It was composed of nine divisions, one for each of the nine congressional districts at the time. Jefferson County was in the Ninth Congressional District. "The Plattin Rangers Company" was raised in Plattin Township in the early summer of 1861. It was largely composed of Jefferson County men with some men from St. Louis County. It never really served in the IX Division but served as an independent cavalry company in the I Division. The company was commanded by Captain White Kennett, First Lieutenant Harry Churchhill and Second Lieutenant Charles B. Tilden. The uniforms of the Plattin Rangers consisted of red caps, red shirts and grey pants. "The Dixie Rangers Company" was raised in Jefferson and St. Francois Counties, contained men mostly from Jefferson County and was organized July 10, 1861. They mustered out on December 24, 1861 in New Madrid. They never served with the IX Division. They served as Company D, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, I Division. The company was commanded by Captain John J. Smith, First Lieutenants C. D. Payne and R. Burris, Second Lieutenant Felix Murray and Third Lieutenants Captain Benjamin Tyler and J. Essellman. "The Iron, Jefferson, Madison, Reynolds & Washington Counties Company" was organized July 5, 1861 and mustered out December 27, 1861 in New Madrid. They never served with the IX Division. They served as Company A, Third Cavalry Regiment, I Division. They often operated independently and were referred to as "White's Partisan Ranger Company." They were commanded by Captain James D. White, First Lieutenants Captain Whitaker A. Martin and Merrill Park, Second Lieutenant Thomas B. Sandford and Third Lieutenant William T. Relfe. "The Jefferson & St. Francois Counties Company" was organized September 12, 1861 and mustered out December 24, 1861 at New Madrid. They never served with the IX Division. They served as Company F, Second Cavalry Regiment, I Division. They were commanded by Captain O. D. Turley, First Lieutenant William Simpson, Second Lieutenant James Moore and Third Lieutenant William S. Wilcox. I share this information with you in the hope that we may learn that our ancestors from the Threshing Crew may have joined one of these units. Perhaps one of the names I have provided you with will match up with names you have in your records. Jared

    3. If you're too far from Hillsboro, like I am, you can order it through the Missouri Historical Society. As you said, they want a date and a newspaper name. I suggest you start with the Jefferson Democrat as did Desoto Joe. I would think that 1865-1866 would be on one roll. Also, if you happen to see the name William D Pyeatt/Piatt/Pyatt (or, any Piatt/Pyatt/Pyeatt) in any issue - he enlisted in the Confederacy with a threshing crew in 1864 and I'm very interested in any newspaper account from any time period. 3. >Also, does anyone know where I can find a copy of the 1860 Slave >Schdules for Jefferson Co. The LDS does not have it. thanks Yes, they have it. It is just an indexing problem. Go to the online catalog at: http://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlc/frameset_fhlc.asp Go to Missouri--Census--1860 and then click on population schedules. The slave schedules are listed at the end of the population schedules. It's just a problem in the way they do not index the slave schedules separately for their catalog. The microfilm you want is 0,803,662 Rick Saunders

    3. I am looking for others who might be researching the following families: James C. Powers who married Margaret McCulloch 2/5/1862 - Patrick Thomas b. in Ind. who married Sarah McCulloch 3/22/1854. I do not find either James or Margaret on the 1880 census and Sarah is listed as head of the household on the 1880 census. Children of Patrick and Sarah were: Alexina?? b. 1855 Amanda b. 1858 James b. 1861 John b. 1863 Patrick b. 1865 Peter b. 1870 Also, does anyone know where I can find a copy of the 1860 Slave Schdules for Jefferson Co.
