Hi MoJeffer Members! I'm LaDonna Garner, the new List Administrator, or List Mom as some call it, I'm very excited to be keeping the list on track and moving. [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) I'm a member of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, Newsletter Editor and wear many other hats around Jefferson County so if you don't know me yet, you most likely will eventually, I am here to help. For those who will be asking, the past administrator has been unavailable for reasons unknown to me. So we will wish him great health and successful researching and continue on. UNPOSTED E-Mails: I know some of you, especially the Volunteer Team, have sent emails that never posted to the list during the past few months. Postings are filtered for various reasons and size is one of them. Please try to keep your emails to a desireble post size, under 6 printable pages and you should have no problems. Contact me and I will help you figure post size. An unposted email gets auto deleted within 7 days, so any unposted emails you posted before Feb. 17, feel free to repost them now. I will be monitoring this area regularly and will contact all senders before the auto delete happens. (FYI, this letter is about 2 printed pages) The remainder of this email will review updates to the Mailing Lists Policies and How-Tos. If you have a concern with anything or anyone regarding this list, please contact me directly at [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . If I am ever to be away from the world more than 2 consecutive days, I promise to post a notice. Hoping this list produces many findings and friends...good luck on your researching! The following is Policies and How-To's for the mailing list. Please keep this message handy or visit _http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/MO/jefferson.html_ (http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/MO/jefferson.html) . You can also view and search past messages to the mailing list. PLEASE DO NOT post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc. When in dought, contact me direclty. For information on virus hoaxes see _http://www.symantec.com_ (http://www.symantec.com) and check their searchable encyclopedia. ITEMS FOR SALE: Rootsweb prohibits using the list to promote advertising, personal or business. With our list being unique in reference use, posting a reference you found for purchase will be permitted but please conduct purchasing info, such as prices, off list in private email. I appreciate everyone's cooperation in keeping this a peaceful and pleasant list. FLAMES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! The list is to be conducted in a friendly and helpful manner; failure to do so will result in removal from the list. Each member has much to offer and are welcomed to join in the discussions. If a discussion shall result in a heated dispute, please take it in stride, smile, and move on...I'll take care of the situation privately. SIGNATURE LINES: Please be courteous and keep your signature line to a 3 line minimum. Rootsweb has also suggested we not include our entire "Researching surnames" in the signature lines causing the archives search engine to include this in its surname search causing mayhem for visitors. FILE ATTACHMENTS: (messages with files appended or attached) to the list are not allowed by RootsWeb due to concerns with virus attacks and size. If you have a file you would like to share with other members, post what you have to share, then send the file only to those who request it, via private email; you may post the website address for members to visit. MAILING & POSTING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. TO POST A MESSAGE TO THE MAILING LIST, send it to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. When replying to a posting, you may want to change the Subject line for better responses. Be courteous, 1 page emails are more pleasant for most members to view, download, and print. DO REMEMBER when replying to a digest email, highlight the text you'd like to forward or delete what you do not need to avoid reposting the entire digest (of many previous emails) which can make the post too large. 2. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE. Whatever you just prevoiusly did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" (without the quotes) to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . 3. HOW TO CHANGE TO DIGEST MODE (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message every 12 hours or every approx. 32,000 bytes). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" (without the quotes) to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" (without the quotes) to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) to start receiving digests. 4. HOW TO CHANGE TO NOMAIL MODE. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. You can always visit the archives for past messages _http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MOJEFFER/_ (http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MOJEFFER/) 5. HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE. Send a message to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text.
Hi Gary, You will want to visit the circuit court clerk at the court house and review the microfilm. Be sure to note the newspaper Circuit court dockets (agendas) printed frequently before, during, and after that time to follow the case to make it easier & quicker searching. Some of the original books may be housed at the Jefferson County History Center (Jefferson College Library), I don't have a list available but will note which ones next time I visit. If you can't visit, the MO State Archives sells the microfilm, they are not interlibrary loaned. In a message dated 3/1/2005 7:24:50 P.M. This was William Jasper Adams. On page 11 of Howard Litton's book Tanglefoot, Volume 1(he is quoting from an article in "The Building Trades Journal, Volume 16, No. 6, St. Louis, MO, November 15, 1895 (Tanglefoot refers to Festus) "William Jasper Adams, Hotel - Mr. Adams is the pioneer hotel man in Festus as well as the first settler in town, in fact the city now occupies what at one time was Mr. Adam's farm. The present elegant building was erected in 1883 for this special purpose. He has been identified with the progress of Festus since its founding and has held various positions of trust, at present being collector for the city. He and his sons are also in the news and confectionary business. They carry a full and complete line of confectionary items, notions, toys, school supplies, cigars and tobacco. They have been in business since 1890." Later references to him in Mr. Litton's book say "W.J. Adams and Sallie A. Adams, his wife, were the proud parents of four children; Jasper, William, Esther and Beulah." "The next news item in the paper (Tri City Independent) dated December 5, 1919 stated that Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Adams and grandchildren bid Festus goodbye this day, departing for St. Louis where they would make their home. They had resided in Festus continuously for more than 48 years, arriving in 1871, at which time there were but 6 or 8 houses in all of Festus. Mr. Adams had driven a hack ever since arriving in Festus, meeting trains at Bailey Station before railroads touched the twin cities. On December 31, 1919, W.J. Adams returned to Festus on a short business trip. He wanted to sell his team of horses and his hack." I cannot tell you how to do internet research on a lawsuit, if that is what you mean. However, as a practicing lawyer I can tell you that a trip to the courthouse should reveal which officer (probably the court clerk) has the file. There should be an index and the file should still be available, either in reality or on microfilm. Of course I mean the courthouse for the county in which the lawsuit was filed. Hope this helps, Dan
I have never done this in missouri, but Illinois does have an archive, so hopefully Jeff Co will too. Good Luck!! Don't know how helpful this is, but the Mo. St. Archives has a website of Mo. supreme court cases and it is searchable online. I was able to find an 1811 court case involving my ancester Hugh McCullough and for a small amount of money was able to get the complete court record of the case - very interesting reading. The Mo. Archives site is: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/judiciary/supremecourt/default.asp#search ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Null" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 01, 2005 6:25 PM Subject: [MOJEFFER] Researching Lawsuits? > How do I research more about the lawsuit notice that was transcribed? > ________________________________ > Jefferson County Record > May 11, 1911 > Volunteer Transcription Part 4 > > Post master Theo. I have been digging around on this, but nothing yet, 2 headed babies must have been rare... I did find this, and it could be totally unrelated but thought you might like to hang onto it just incase, it lists that there is a photo graph in an album of a two headed baby. Don't know if there is more info on where the baby came from http://www.sandiegohistory.org/photocollect/palist2.htm#258 PA 258 & PA 259 Walter Ipsen/Calfornia-Pacific Exposition Photograph Albums, 1935- 1936. These two albums contain the photographs of Walter Ipsen, a member of the bugle corps (?) of Company G, the 30th Infantry in the U.S. Army during the 1935-1936 Exposition in Balboa Park. Images include Exposition sites, activities and people. Subjects include San Diego Zoo, Native Americans in Ken Maynard's Wild West Show, 'girl chorus'' and other groups at the Organ Pavilion, Tin Pan Alley on the Midway, Army soldiers, troops doing drills, Army Camp Derby, the Lakeside Rodeo, artillery guns at Camp Don (1936), Falstaff Tavern, Old Globe Theater, midway shows including 'A Real Two-Headed Baby,' Johnnie McDill 'the Mae West of Midgets,' Zoro Gardens Nudist Colony performances, (Queen Tanya with other nudists who are identified by first name), 11th Cavalry drill, beer garden, Midget Circus entrance, Palace of Education, Spanish Village, Enchanted Land, lily pond, Press Building, semi nude chorus girls with guns and bugles, Peter the Hermit, Indian Village, Caf‚ of the World, Palisades Caf‚, model town, Avenida del Palacios, California State Building, Exposition bus, Victor McLaglen's motorcycle group & parade, high wire act, Army band and bugle corps, soldiers playing volleyball, Beech-nut girl, cactus gardens, some buildings at night, 'bail out tower' ride, Hollywood Hall of Fame, Streets of Paris, Gold Gulch, and many other attractions. does anyone have any info on the Adams who was mayor of Festus in the 1890's . What was his first name? or family? thanks- James Davis researching DAVIS &ADAMS
This is a little scary, I have a great aunt who was named Lola Williams about the right age to be this Lola Williams. Since no husband was mentioned I would guess she wasn't married. Mom once told me Lola had had a illegitimate child. Of course, there was no mention of a two headed baby. But my mother probably didn't know as she wasn't born till 1915. If anyone has any info on this please forward to me also. Thank you, Darlene
James, I feel pretty dumb - sometimes all the 'unknowns' run together (until my brain crosses as much as my eyes do). Can you believe, that I knew Bechler was the Sheriff, and that he had more than one term as sheriff. My mind was stuck on the first letter 'R', so I assumed there must have been more than one sheriff...it never crossed my mind that the first letter was the problem. Thank you for solving this!
