"On this rootsweb maillist and all the others I subscribe to, in order to reply to the maillist, rather than it be a private email, you choose "reply all" rather than just "reply". Choosing "reply" will send a private email to only the person who posted the message." That is not how it works for me - the majority of the lists send ALL replies back to the entire list - even tho I may only click reply and not reply to all. I have watched this happen many times so now I am careful to remove the list from a reply or comment that is not appropriate for the whole group.
"In my opinion, not having them default to the List, leaves a lot of unanswered questions in the archives because a lot of people just click "reply" and don't realize it's not going back to List" Possibly it could be set up so you can either reply to the list or to the individual? My AOL does that - it is rather annoying to have those lists whose every reply goes to the entire list - so much of the replies are just a thank you or something that is not relevant to the list at all.
In the List Tools (customized settings) which only the List Administrator can access, the choice is given of either checking or unchecking a box next to following statement: "Replies should go back to the list by default". They either do or don't. There's no other choice, or other way it can be set up. The reply to list by default feature is beneficial because it keeps the facts on the list and into archives so that future researchers can benefit from the information. When the information is sent via private response, it's not doing anyone else any good but the person who receives it. I agree too that everyone should make an effort to see that their thank you's are sent via private e-mail. I also prefer reply to list, I love to hear about area families and learn a lot about others searches in the area. Linda On Mar 3, 2005, at 9:53 AM, B. I emailed the state coordinator several months ago about the status of this site, but I received no reply whatsoever. The ~only~ thing that has been updated are the pictures that were referenced below. I have tried to contact the site administrator with no results. I have submitted information, with no results. I know several others who have also tried, and had the same experience. We (as a group) are missing out on a ton of information that has been submitted and would be so useful, but without someone reliable administrating, nothing can be done. And without Mr. Kuhlman's cooperation, or the state's help, nobody can "take over" the site either. I truly don't understand why, if he no longer wants to administer the site, he hasn't just told someone, so that somebody else can take over. It ~is~ a wonderful website. But it could be so much more! He is also "supposed" to be administrator of the Jefferson County Historical Society webpage, but they are in the same situation. They cannot update their info, etc....because he won't answer their emails, etc.... It is very frustrating! Yes, I know that. However, a lot of folks don't know that and assume when they click reply that it's going back to the List, and it doesn't. By having messages default to the List, it keeps the flow of discussion going better. Also, for example, on our messages which we just exchanged, when you clicked "Reply All", I got your reply twice, once from List and once from you. Now, that I've clicked reply all to respond to make sure my message goes back to List, you're getting message from List plus personal message from me. If it defaulted to List, you'd just get it once. Oh, we could avoid this by wiping out each other's names on the "TO" line and just leaving copy to List, but that's just an extra step to take. Bettye On Thu, March 3, 2005 11:28 am, M. Larry, If you have documentation that would be valuable to other researchers, why don't you consider post it to the Message Board, or the Mailing List in addition to submitting it to the MoGenWeb site? You can add attachments such as photos, scanned documents, etc. to the message board posts. At least that way it would be "out there" for other researchers to find pending the MoGenWeb coordinator getting it added to the site. I'm the coordinator of the St. Francois County MoGenWeb site. St. Francois County is a smaller county than Jefferson County, and you would not believe the huge backlog of submitted items I have to add to the site. Sometimes it gets so overwhelming I don't know where to start. These sites are run by unpaid volunteers and getting this stuff organized and online takes a lot more time than most people realize. I have to work full time at another job which, coupled with family obligations, sometimes leaves me with very little time and energy to work on the site on a daily or even weekly basis, even though I would love to have the time to. On this rootsweb maillist and all the others I subscribe to, in order to reply to the maillist, rather than it be a private email, you choose "reply all" rather than just "reply". Choosing "reply" will send a private email to only the person who posted the message. ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. LaDonna, I've noticed that replies now no longer default to the List but, instead, go privately to the person who posted the message. I'm thinking that they used to default to the List. Did you change this option when you took over List? In my opinion, not having them default to the List, leaves a lot of unanswered questions in the archives because a lot of people just click "reply" and don't realize it's not going back to List. I'm the Administrator of several mailing lists, and I've found that having replies default to the List generates a lot more interaction between the subscribers. Also, many times, when people post queries there may be other people lurking out there who would like to know the answer too, but when reply goes privately to poster, they're left hanging. This is just my opinion. I've submitted several times over the last two years with nothing ever being added even after the administrator emailed me to tell me they would. I think its been poorly kept and is in need of someone that will take on the responsibility and duties in an expeditious manner. I have a lot I could add but I don't seem to have the luck you did. The website just sits there and collects dust in my opinion. Larry ================ ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. Is this your aunt? She was married to a Clyde Williams. According to the article, Lola Williams who had the two-headed baby was 18 years old and I didn't think that the age matched up, but then I don't know the exact date of that article either. There were a child or two in that cemetery that I thought maybe could be this baby, in the event that it didn't live long. I tried researching on Goggle, using name of doctor, hospital, etc., but didn't come up with much. Keep us posted if you find out anything further. I found a picture of a two headed baby online and she was really strange - not at all like I had envisioned. Here is link in the event anyone wants to take a look at her. <http://journals.aol.com/hestiahomeschool/HomeschoolingJournal/entries/3276> If above link doesn't work, try this: http://tinyurl.com/6f3wr Bettye On Tue, March 1, 2005 2:32 am, Darlene Green said: > This is a little scary, I have a great aunt who was named Lola Williams > about the right age to be this Lola Williams. LaDonna, What Jefferson County website are you referring to as not being kept up? Surely you're not referring to the Jefferson County MoGenWeb site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mojeffer/index.html In my opinion it's a wonderful website and is being kept up quite well. I submitted some photos recently which were promptly added to the website. Hi Listers, Many of you have been asking about the status of the MoJeffer Website. The mailing list and the website are not managed together, I have no way of updating the website. I have made contact with the state coordinator and he is looking into the matter. Currently the site has not been considered abandoned. I do not know what steps will be taken in this situation or MoGenWeb policies until the state Coordinator informs me. At this point in time, I do want to ask for any volunteers who may be interested in helping temporarily or permanently with the site if they can not contact the coordinator or if he just needs assistance. If it comes to needing a new coordinator, I have been told by others, it can be a slow process, maybe even taking up to 30 days to update/change coordinators. Please email me off list and let me know you may be interested so I can contact you in the future. Thanks for being patient, LaDonna List Mom
Found the following website in Ancestry.com magazine. Database for Missourians that served in Military conflicts from War of 1812 to World War I. Website is www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers ===== __________________________________ Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Yahoo! The Mo State Archives has a downloadable list of each Local Records (Missouri Counties) microfilm record available. You can visit and view microfilm at their Research Room in person if you live in that area. _http://sos.state.mo.us/archives/resources/county/croll.asp_ (http://sos.state.mo.us/archives/resources/county/croll.asp) I purchase for home use and have not had a problem with them. Do you know more about the microfilm at the MO State Archives? Is there a list of available years published? The Circuit Court docket 1916-1917 time frame is at the Jeffco Library, so hopefully 1911 is there too. -Kay Subj: Re: [MOJEFFER] Researching Lawsuits? Date: 3/2/2005 8:50:31 AM Eastern Standard Time From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Hi Gary, You will want to visit the circuit court clerk at the court house and review the microfilm. Be sure to note the newspaper Circuit court dockets (agendas) printed frequently before, during, and after that time to follow the case to make it easier & quicker searching. Some of the original books may be housed at the Jefferson County History Center (Jefferson College Library), I don't have a list available but will note which ones next time I visit. If you can't visit, the MO State Archives sells the microfilm, they are not interlibrary loaned. In a message dated 3/1/2005 7:24:50 P.M. Let me look into the details on the site and I will update everyone with what's going on and what can be done.
