Phil Armstrong, of Webb City, Mo., will be the guest speaker at the program to be held in the upstairs meeting room at the library. It is asked that those planning to attend sign up as soon as possible or call the library at 541-2291 to make reservations. Dowsing refers to the skill, art or craft of detecting hidden or buried water, metals, gemstones, or graves without the use of scientific apparatus. Dowsers generally use an Y- or L-shaped twig or rod to assist with detection. Dowsing has existed in various forms for thousands of years Armstrong has been associated with genealogy research for more than 30 years. He will discuss the use of rods to locate graves and identify the sex and age of those buried. Barbara Becker, genealogy librarian at the Miami Public Library, considered herself a true skeptic when she first heard Armstrong speak about grave dowsing at a Grove Genealogy Fair. She walked away a believer. "Everyone knows the human body has metal in it," she said. "The dowser's rods are attracted to or react to that metal. "It's not a matter of witchcraft or the occult. It's just a science we don't understand yet." Those who believe or don't believe in dowsing are invited to hear Armstrong discuss his experiences. ~~~~~ Depending on which part of Jasper Co. you are in, you may find yourself interested in the adjoining Counties also.
