    3. This is from Lowell & Tennessee Prarie A Historical Sketch of the Oldest Settled Portions of the County. Copied from the Modern Light, January 27, 1898. "In '59 or '60 the Colony settlement north of Spring River had a post office located there called Brushville, because of its nearness to Bush Creek. This was probably the first post office within the present limits of Cherokee County. This office was discontinued suddenly about the time of the battle of Carthage." Calvin went to Southeast Kansas, where he was one of the earliest settlers. He "broke out" some prairie land and built some cabins on the west side of Spring River near the mouth Shoal Creek which is now Cherokee Co., Kansas. Calvin appears in the Deerfield Township, Van Buren Co., MO., Census of 1840. Then in 1850 was in the Census for McDonald Co., MO. He probably later moved to Jasper County, Missouri, just a few miles east across the state line, and served as a Justice of the Peace in 1855. Calvin was appointed first postmaster 8 Dec 1858, at Brushville, McGee Co., KS., for a year or two. This info is found in a book called Kansas Post Offices, or similar. The stuff on Lowell and Tennessee Prairie says that the office was discontinued at the time of the battle of Carthage (date?). Calvin had built three cabins on his place, and about 1859 Quaker Valley Mills, a school was taught in one of them by the daughter of Dr. Lisle. He died before the Civil War and is buried near Carthage, Missouri. It shows that the post master and all took a private departure for the north, with what cattle and property they could collect hastily. Also I am showing a 1860 Census 8 Oct taken shows Calvin age 46 b.TN., Perlina age 41 b. TN., David S age 18 b. MO., Nancy Jane age 16 b. MO., William age 15 b. MO., James age 12 b. MO., George G. age 8 b. MO., Mary P age 7 b. MO., Julia Ann age 4 b. MO. (Don't know where the census was taken.) My questions is this, as early as March 26, 1839, Van Buren Co., Mo., m. to Perlina. 1840 Calvin appeared on the Deerfield Township, Van Buren Co., Mo. Census Then again 1850 Census McDonald Co., Mo. Justice of Peace 1855 at Jasper County, Mo., Calvin was apponited past master 8 Dec., 1859. Then if this Census for 1860 is correct then Calvin died during or after 1860. Also Perlina according to Norman James "an insurance policy issued to Garrett James died at the age of forty eight, of pneumonia. This would place his death in 1862, which is probably too late, Perlina died of malaria fever (?) at the age of 50. But this would place her death in 1869, and Jennie said she died during the war." Terry How many of Calvin and Perlina children was watched over by John R Blythe and also how many of his children was still there for Perlina to watch. I would think that Perlina became wealthy from the death of Calvin an John. Because if she went to Topeka, Kansas I sure that she didn't have to worry about remarrying to take care of the kids. Was her relative's living there? Why would she leave the farms (two) to go to the city? Has anybody got an Will or probate on Calvin or John? If not were would be the best place to look.
