Hello , Am trying to locate an M.E. church in Carthage that my grgrandmother's brother,Henry G. Can't help you with the Mais name, but the ME church would most likely have been what is now the Methodist church in downtown Carthage. My gr grandparents attended church there, my grandparents were married there, and my grandmother's sister played the organ there. My gr grandmother was born in 1845 and my grandmother was born in 1866, so one (if not both) of them would certainly have known your Henry Mais. Also, coincidentally, my gr grandmother (above) was born and raised in California, MO and her grandfather was a Methodist minister who organized the first Methodist congregation in California (1840). In 1847 the congregation moved to town and worshiped in the courthouse until a church was built (1855). This was the first church built in California. By 1917 the church had been been converted into "California Machine Works." The post office now stands on the site. The chances are pretty good that our families knew each other in both California and Carthage, but I've never come across the Mais name in my research.
