Hi Listers - Wondering if someone could help me -- I was given the name of Pat West, Caretaker of Carterville Cemetery. I wrote her asking for help locating a death date/grave for my ggf, John Riley Johnson. His wife B.A. Johnson, (Betsy Ann) has a marker, and his name is listed in the index as being there also, but no marker visible. My leter came back as not living at 816 Massachusetts Ave. Joplin, which I was given as a contact address. Question, does anyone know how to contact her, or whoever is caretaker of Carterville Cemetery, or obtain a death date for John R? Thanks in advance. Beverly in Az.
I suggest you call the Jasper County Research Center. Their number is 417-359-1100. Bev, Try calling information for Joplin, MO and getting a direct listing for the cemetery and for one mortuary. If you cannot reach anyone directly at the Cemetery with a phone call, then try the mortuary and get a cemetery contact from them. I just did all of the above to locate burial info in Lompoc, CA. Also if you post a request on the Rootsweb.com Joplin County site, you may find someone who is kind enough to go out and take a photo of both the gravesites and the headstone for you. I woke up this A.M. and had photos (taken by a person in Lompoc) of every headstone for my family members in the cemetery and my grandfather's gravesite, no headstone. Of course now that I know there is no headstone I will have one placed there. If you can find out the name of the actual Mortuary that handled the burials, and they are still in business, they may be willing to locate their records & send you copies....that always has great family info, Addresses, names of family members etc. Reasons for death...Worth the effort to try. Many mortuary businesses stay in the family for generations so it is possible.
