Wandering around the internet I came across a site of special interest to those (especially out-of-towners) who have been seeking information of residents of the area during the mining boom and who may be bewildered by frequent references to mountain-like chat piles and mineral-laced water pools which mark abandoned mining sites in the area. John Schehrer has posted some advice re research and a bevy of pictures showing mining sites mainly in Ottawa County OK which abuts Jasper and Newton counties in MO and KS forming what is termed the Tri-State area. The Webb City MO-based Southwest Missouri Railway (a streetcar system) was extended to Picher OK to help miners who continued to live in Jasper Co MO reach the active mines there, as the mines in MO were closed Try it: <http://www.homestead.com/schehrer2/research.html> At the bottom of the "Research" page hit "Back to Start" and enjoy the pictures and other info.
