    1. [MOJASPER] Fw: [STLOUIS-MO] Nettie RIDDLESBARGER and Geo. W. READ - St. Louis &Carthage

    3. Forwarding to the MOJASPER list - got the address wrong on the original. Oops. Sorry. Tired. Marie -------Original Message------- From: mstephen Date: 12/02/07 11:24:45 To: MOJASPER-L-request@rootsweb.com; stlouis-mo@rootsweb.com Subject: [STLOUIS-MO] Nettie RIDDLESBARGER and Geo. W. READ - St. Louis &Carthage My Nettie RIDDLESBARGER seems to have kept her name Nettie (I was earlier wondering if it were really Jeanette). I have found that she married Geo. W. Read probably in St. Louis, probably in either 1883 or 1884. She is with her mother Susan Riddlesbarger in the 1880 St. Louis census in June and then they (incorrectly written as Riddlesbacher) are with her sister Emma Barrere (incorrectly written as Barrera) and husband in the November census 1880. I have found Nettie and Geo. in the 1910 St. Louis census as well as the 1920 St. Louis census. Nettie Price Read died in St. Louis in 1922. I have printed out her death certificate. I have found Geo. W. Read of Carthage as President of the Missouri Division of the Railway Agents' Association at least in 1893. Information gleaned from an article written in 1929 based on an interview with Nettie's sister Fannie (Frances Adkins Riddlesbarger Schafer) says that after the death of the mother Susan Riddlesbarger in 1884 Fannie went with her sister and husband to Carthage, where Fannie grew up, met and married Pierre Schafer. Now, my questions and requests for help. I cannot find Nettie and Geo. Read in the 1900 census. Can anyone help there? I can't find them in St. Louis, and I can't find them in Jasper County. I cannot yet find Nettie and Geo. W. Read's marriage. This I believe was in St. Louis and is outside of the online searchables. I have the LDS film numbers for St. Louis marriages. Does anyone have access to these without ordering them in? Does anyone go to the local Family History Center which keeps these on site and could look in them? I can order in the ones I need so as to print copies, but if someone could please look in the indexes and tell me a marriage date I could then order in the appropriate films here. The numbers are 528151 - Index to marriages, male O-Z 1881-1911 (looking for Geo. W. Read, born in Canada about 1846 or 1847 -- also looking for Pierre G Schafer who married Nettie's sister Fannie); 528164 - Index to marriages, female O-Z 1881-1911 (looking for Nettie Riddlesbarger, born in Kansas City, Missouri to Jesse Riddlesbarger and Susan Norton Riddlesbarger; on Nettie's death certificate she is "Nettie Price Read" and I have not seen "Price" in other references to her so do not know if that is a first-married name - I don't think so, as in the 1910 census they are both M1, 26 years. Also looking for sister Fannie or Frances Adkins Riddlesbarger, same parents, born in St. Louis about 1869.) I have sister Emma's marriage in 1874 in St. Louis. City Directories - does anyone have access to city directories for St. Louis and Carthage to help me pin down when Nettie & Geo. Read were in those two places? Since I cannot find them in the 1900 census I don't know when they went back to St. Louis, where they are in 1910 as well as 1920, both years on Clara Ave. Clara Ave is also the address on Nettie's death certificate. Death notice & burial permit from St. Louis Post Dispatch -- I found that death notice and burial permit were published in the St. Louis Dispatch, 1922: Read, Nettie Price 9/18 p21, *9/20 p24 (this latter appears to be the burial permit). Can anyone find these for me and scan or copy and mail? Costs covered, of course. Replies to mstephen@bmt.net . Thank you so much for any help on the above. 3. Missouri Adoption records were sealed in 1941 so you might get lucky and find something in the county court house in Carthage. But, you must know for certain this is where the adoption took place. Being born in Jasper Co doesn't mean the adoption took place there. And, the other way around - being adopted in Jasper Co doesn't mean the person was born there. At this time I don't believe you will be able to access any records from the State. There is a current law which allows some access to records but the time frame you are seeking may or may not be included. Even if it is included - only the adoptee can request the info and the adoptive parents have to okay things, etc. In your case everyone is deceased so I don't think you will have much luck. Let me caution you that should you contact the State for info - it will probably close any access you might have found thru the county court. So, do not contact the State. Do not request an original birth certificate or any other documents. If you will contact me privately - I can give you a few ideas on ways to conduct your research without sending up any red flags. Mary

    3. He seems to have just walked away from his first family Your fellow is not the only one to do that. My ancestor left his wife while she was pregnant with his second child (just because he thought the child was not his); and he married a young 'chick' nearby and had 13 more children. His brother went west leaving behind a wife & 14 'kids' just to get away from the hard feelings of the Civil War in MO. and none in the family wanted to go with him. His pension did go to his 1st wife. His obituary suggests that he married again out west. In his Civil War records he doesn't even mention his first wife, but does at least mention the kids! I was hoping an obituary might have more information on his second family. 3. Did you get "All" his Civil War record envelope file, or just the ones they picked for the price you paid? If so, you may just not have gotten the info that you wanted. I don't have a lot of them, but I bought the entire file, which included everything even all the scrap paper, back when they weren't as expensive as they are now. I bought one entire file and I could tell I hadn't gotten it all while reading, then by putting it together page by numbered page. I wrote back asking for everything I hadn't got, but had paid for. I'd paid over $50.00 and got little info of any value. I wasn't able to get them to give it all to me, they claimed to not be able to find the rest, I finally had to give up. I did however get something on one page they'd sent. Up to that point I'd gotten nothing prior to the War and his marriage, but all the marriage information was there. I still have no idea if he's a relative of mine or my step great great grandmother. I have a few photographs of him from an old photo album. Anyway, every file I bought had the information for every marriage, sometimes conflicting info from different filing times, which still asked the same questions. It even had the marriages of his widow when she drew his pension after having later married twice. They had the info on the children dead and alive, but again it was often different from one application to the next. I may be wrong, but I believe only minor children needed to be accounted for in the records. Once they have no rights to support they didn't need to still be listed. I'm no longer up on the facts about the records. There can be much confusion of names, dates and birth orders especially as the applicant ages. I have death dates, with cemeteries, but am unable to find any records to support the info. This is after Death Certificates were required. I will say the State of Oklahoma tried... I think they sent me everything that was remotely close. Obituaries? Just take a look at some of todays. People die, but apparently were never born. There is no birthdate, place or parents. Some don't even give a death date or place. The women (generally speaking) may have a number of sons with different surnames, sometimes including their own maiden name. There is no mention of husbands. Their daughters will still be using their maiden or other names, but most of the male grandchildren will have yet other surnames. It's also the same with some men, they'll have a number of sons with different surnames NOT including their own. Nothing in the obits accounts for it. I read and wonder! Obituaries can be full of incorrect information especially in the old days, when they were written by/for the local newspaper without any info from the family. I have one with the deceased's given name entirely incorrect! I had one, the deceased's name was the only thing correct. I have obituaries of people I knew, and they are absolutely confusing and actually incorrect, but some one of the family gave the info and it was published. It's possible you may be able to find an obituary for him via the newspaper. The Carterville City Hall, I believe, has cemetery records to tell you if anyone else of his surname is buried in the cemetery. If you think some are buried under different surnames, they should be able to check them also. If you know his wive's names check WorldConnect to see if anyone has them in a family tree without knowing about him or with his name incorrect. Also check www.familysearch.org. Do you know which State, if not MO, he married in, check them for online records. I suggest you contact the researchers on WorldConnect, with some information from you, they may realize they know, or have more information than they think. This band stayed together until 1928. Please contact me if you recognize any of these names. I think Byron Fly later became "a judge".
