I've learned a tiny piece of info on George & hoping someone can help! This would be the son of Stephen & Talitha HOWARD, and he was born in IL. I was told "he may have died in 1901 in Jasper Co." I believe George is living next door to his mother on the 1880 census, with a wife Mary & several children. Is there anyone from the area willing to do a look up? I have no other info on his life at this point. Thank you in advance... Mary in Michigan i-be-leve@msn.com
You are right of course. I amnot giving up, just puzzled. My frind Gladys Kitchen in OK found this and now I am confused even more, if that is possible... I got one for you. I put in Sultana Coates into the 1930 census , the only one found was a married women , living in san Franciso, Cal. born 1892, Greece, has three children, and hubby 's name Gustave. So do you think senseor wasn't Willis in Calif, before returning to Mo. that these are who we are looking for and she was a married lady, they ran off together, had kid , she didn't like Mo. and went back West. Beig from Greece she would of been dark in color and perhaps taken for and Indian. Think about it. Hummm... Hi Rose, Yes, if they try to disappear, finding them becomes almost impossible. But what if "her son" went into the household of a relative, say someone else from their tribe or to another person with kind & good feelings toward the Native Americans. No, they would not necessarily marry where they met, going over the 'county' or 'state' line cannot be ruled out. Hi Rose, Yes, the Osage Indians were in that area, but not just S.W. Missouri. Check a map for Jasper Co., MO. Jasper Co., MO. is next to Cherokee & Crawford counties of KS. South of Jasper you would find Newton and McDonald counties of MO., and just to the west you would be in Ottawa and Delaware counties of OK. And remember that Oklahoma was the original Indian Territory. East of Newton and McDonald counties of MO. you would find Lawrence and Barry counties of MO. South of McDonald and Barry counties of MO. you would find Benton and Carroll counties of AR. So you better be looking over the borders of all these counties even when it is over the state line. I know one gal from church whose mother was a mixture of several Indian tribes. She came from Miami, Ottawa Co., OK. The Handybook for Genealogists is quite interesting at this point. Ottawa Co., OK. created in 1907 - parent county = Indian Terr. Delaware Co., OK. created in 1907 - parent county = Cherokee Lands Adair Co., OK. created in 1907 - parent county = Cherokee Lands Different OK. counties came from different Indian tribe lands. But down in Arkansas that is not the case. Have you tried to google Osaga or Native American tribes? Can anyone else give Rose a suggestion? Hello list, I am Rose Adams from sunny CA. I am new to this list and am hoping for a good outcome for my search. My grandfather Willis Raymond Adams marrid Sultana E. Coats in 1939 in Sarcoxie. They were supposed to have had a son, he is said to be indian. We have been looking and looking trying to find our cousin, but until we found the marriage license, we didnt know where they lived. Since we dont have a census for that time for a while yet, can any of you suggest what we look for? I dont know if they divorced or if she died. Hopefully in CA Rose Adams
