The Dupont plant in Carl Junction manufactured dynamite (TNT). My grandfather, Henry Grounds, was the plant nurse. While we spent many evening meals listening to his description of plant mishaps, they were usually from men getting caught in the machinery instead of explosions. In fact, I don't remember ever hearing about an explosion. Does anyone else have memories, photos, or knowledge of the Dupont plant they would be willing to share?

I grew up on a farm north of Joplin and recall that there were two what we called POWDER companies in the area -- DuPont in Carl Junction and Hercules in Joplin. Now I realize that when they had explosions at these plants (and I recall there being at least one at each plant when I lived back there)that POWER was generated, but don't think it was intentional.... picky, picky, picky!!! I think we may be related. My grandfather was Earl E. Hill and his father was John Riley Hill, who was Samuel Piety Hill's brother. I think that is correct. Anyway, I have just started trying to trace a lot of the Hill family. I have a little bit of info and have some pictures which has helped somewhat. Maybe we can share some information some time. I live overseas in Scotland and am hoping someone may be able to help me.I'm very willing to pay for any help. I'm hoping to find an obit and to see if Sarah's husband is buried next to her. Sarah is buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Jasper Co. Sarah Rinearson York/Simpson born 29th Jun 1860, died 29 Oct 1922. She was married to Ephraim York and then to an E. T. SImpson. She had 3 daughters I know of, a Ollie M. York/Hauser (no further info), a Grace B. York Roberts, and Mary E. Mary or Ollie married a BLACK as there are 2 grandchildren William D (1906) and Ruth P. (1908) with Sarah on the 1920 census. Sarah after her 2nd marriage to E. T. Simpson in 1906 still shows as Sarah York on the 1910 and 1920, and on her death certificate she is listed as Sarah York Simpson. Hoping to find anything on this family as well as further info on Ephraim York. Thanks, John B.

Looking for obit for Hazel E. CLAY died Joplin April 30, 1974. Also her husband David M. CLAY who was still alive when she died. Thank you Connie
Didn't the mariage license give a location, such as Sultana Coats of Joplin or someplace. They usually do. Re: Greek on census I'm wondering if when asked nationality, Creek couldn't have been the answer. http://www.creekindian.com/ I can tell you with certainty that not all races entered into the census are correct. I've found people of Native American heritage listed as White and Black. In some cases they actually were, they had married into or been adopted into the tribes. They were even entered into the rolls as white/black. There are degrees of race, 1/2; 1/4; 1/16 and etc. There was a point when even though they were some Native American, it was no longer enough. http://www.comanchelodge.com/cherokee-rolls.html http://ngeorgia.com/history/creek.html Orlena Rose Adams <rosebud4242@peoplepc.com> wrote: Hi Gloria: Of course I have tons on the Adams family, nothing on Sultana, as her marriage license only states she is over 18. Hi Gloria: Of course I have tons on the Adams family, nothing on Sultana, as her marriage license only states she is over 18. In a message dated 4/14/2008 10:53:07 AM Central Daylight Time, i-be-leve@msn.com writes: I've learned a tiny piece of info on George & hoping someone can help! This would be the son of Stephen & Talitha HOWARD, and he was born in IL. I was told "he may have died in 1901 in Jasper Co." I believe George is living next door to his mother on the 1880 census, with a wife Mary & several children. Is there anyone from the area willing to do a look up? I have no other info on his life at this point. Thank you in advance... Mary in Michigan i-be-leve@msn.com I couldn't find a death certificate in the Missouri Sec. of State database but I did find him in the 1900 census of Jasper County Missouri (Twin Grove township). He was a 63 y.o. farmer having been born in Feb. 1837 in Illinois. Living with him was his wife Mary E. Howard, age 29, born in Texas in July 1870. They had been married 6 years and she had given birth to three children, two who were still living. One was a female born in Missouri in Dec 1896 ant the other a male named Mysal (?-writing unclear) born in Missouri in March 1899. The previous entry on the census sheet was a Steven Howard, a 35 y.o. farmer born in Jan. 1865 in Kansas, father born in Tenn., mother born in Missouri. His wife, Etta Howard, 26 y.o. born in Illinois in Sept. 1873 (both parents born in Tenn.) She had given birth to 4 children, three were still living. They are Mary M. born in Dec. 1892 in Okla., Nora M. born in Aug. 1894 and John C. born in Feb. 1900 (3 months old) in Missouri. I don't know of any relationship between George and Steven Howard, but it is a large coincidence for two people living next to each other with the same surname so I thought I would include it. If your George Howard was murdered, considering how close to Kansas they were, he could have died in Kansas, possibly in adjoining Cherokee County, KS. Hope this helps.
