    3. This is very true. Miami, Jay, Grove, Picher and so on were good places to get married as the Grand Lake o' the Cherokees was close by--marriage and a honeymoon all in one. If anyone is searching for a wedding date & found nothing, try NE Oklahoma. It was very popular esp. with the mining boom. Something that people who do not live in the Joplin area may not know, is that Miami, Oklahoma, and the surrounding towns are a marriage mill...People from all over the 4 state area will run down to Miami to get married rather than take the time to do it in the local area....There are wedding chapels all over and the Joplin paper advertises places where the blood test and marriage will only take a couple of hours.... _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

    1. Re: [MOJASPER] Marriages in Carthage or Joplin, Census look up for 1880
    2. I thought for years my mother and father were married in Joplin and hounded the Jasper County Court house unmercifully because they could not find the record according to my dead reckoning. I sent letter after letter requesting a records search, one year at a time, for a period of eight years. One day I was cleaning out a bunch of "stuff" I didn't know where it came from. There was a small, square Panatella Cigar box, very neatly and securely tied with old, heavy string that would last forever. On top tied to it was a stack of old letters I had written to my father. For about twelve years he had kept in Lafayette Colorado where he lived and died, every letter I had ever mailed to him from California and Texas. I recognized the handwriting on the letters so I had kept the whole package. My father had died some six years earlier in 1976. I decided to open it up and look in the box. There were two of my son's school picture I had sent to him, my mother death certificate from 1953 when I was 17, my high school graduation certificate, an old highschool 2" x3" picture of me, his first Social Security card made on a little brass plate, two of my son's grade school report cards, and his and mother's marriage license. They had run away and gotten married in a county in due west of Joplin in another town, another county, another state: Vinita, Oklahoma. It was an invaluable lesson for me. It taught me that there were things my father really cared about when I had thought he cared about little of nothing. I shudder to think how many times over the years and my many moves I almost threw my old letters and that cigar box in the trash without unting the string! Bannister and Middleton came with 3 more brothers to Cooper county Mo then to the Carthage MO. where the set up the first court house. 1. [MOJASPER] Earliest LANE ancestor
    2. Richard Moberly
    3. Well, here goes again with my LANE line. My earliest documented LANE is below. Elijah LANE born circa 1815 in Tennessee died before 13 Nov 1877 somewhere in SW Missouri, probably in Newton County Missouri. He married Elizabeth WELLS in Perry County, Illinois, 17 Nov 1836 (I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate)(3X5 handwritten Card) 1.Daughter Manerva LANE born c 1838 Perry County Illinois She married Pleasant F Staton, 19 June 1860, Perry County Illinois. 2.Daughter Lucinda LANE born c 1839 Perry County Illinois She married George W McCollum, 9 Dec 1858, Perry County Illinois 3.Daughter Mary LANE born c 1841 Perry County Illinois She married David Follanslee 6 Oct 1859, Perry County Illinios 4.Son John Daniel (Barelow) LANE born 1 Oct 1844, Tamaroa, Perry County Illinois He married Suphronia Elizabeth KIRBY, 6 Sept 1870, Camp Ground, Uniontown, Bourbon County Kansas. They are my ancestors. John served in the Civil War. I have his muster papers and their marriage certificate. 5.Daughter Sarah LANE born c 1846 Perry County Illinois 6.Son Franklin J LANE born c 1847 Perry County Illinois 7.Daughter Melvina LANE born c 1849 Perry County Illinois Also listed in census as Meloina and Mevina D LANE 8.Son William C LANE born Perry County Illinois 9.Daughter Eliza A LANE born c 1855 Perry County Illinois 10.Son David LANE born c 1862 Perry County Illinois 11.Son John LANE born c 1866 Perry County Illinois (Another John? Could have been named for eldest John who might have not returned from the Civil War yet. John D LANE mustered out in November of 1865 and may not have returned home immediately. Just another question. Possibly a grandson? Another line to follow when I have time.) Below entries all in Perry County Illinois: Elijah LANE granted Land Patent Certificate 1 Aug 1838 Elijah LANE 1840 Census Elijah LANE granted Land Patent Certificate 10 Mar 1843 Elijah LANE 1850 Census Farmer Elijah LANE 1860 Census Farmer Below entries in Newton County Missouri Elijah LANE 1870 Farmer Shoal Creek Township, 13 Nov 1877 John D LANE granted administrator of Elijah LANE estate. 1860 Census District 7 Perry County Illinois Bennett LANE age 85 listed with the household of Elijah LANE Mary LANE age 72 listed with the household of Elijah LANE What is this relationship? Elijah was 45 on the 1860 census (yes, I know he is shown as 65, but with the research done and previous and subsequent census records, logical conclusion is a misread census record or a simple typo) Bennett and Mary could be his grandparents? They have two daughters from an earlier census record. Could be granddaughters as he was approx 57 when Kesiah LANE was born and 59 when Mariah LANE was born. I haven't tracked this family yet, but they are my best bet for a lead on Elijah's ancestors. Best Regards Rich & Terri Moberly NOTE: I have a short story written by my grandmother's sister about her parents and what little she knew of her grandparents. Quite interesting Elijah LANE John D.
