This may be a really dumb question, but how does Cherokee, Kansas relate to Jasper, MO? My grandmother says her father was born in Joplin, Jasper, MO, but other information I have gotten says he was born in Galena, Cherokee, Kansas. I've noticed Cherokee come up often when researching Jasper. What's the connection? Tara Loundree-Anderson Are we related? Hi Rachel, Thanks for the info- my married name is Doherty but all our relatives are from Scotland prior to this generation. I am looking for the Henckel name in Joplin from @ 1868 when I think immigration took place from Germany. If you can be of any help I'd certainly appreciate it. The only connection I have been able to find is my ggrfather is buried in Fairview Cemetary in the "Henckel" plot, he died in Nov 1879 leaving 8-9 children and a wife who just seemed to disappear. I haven't been able to find a definate census listing, land records, immigration record or anything. A connected name at the cemetary and is in several newspaper articles I have been able to find, is Schifferdecker. Actually, I'm writing because I found it interesting that Bank of America is there. I'm a retired employee of that Bank here in CA. It's amazing to see that our dear Founder's dream of a Bank of America everywhere has come to be. It took nearly 100 years, but oh well!! I live here in CA and don't get back 'home' very often. I wonder if someone close there could check a marriage for me, if not, I understand, and will write to county records. Thanks again for the info. Margaret Rollins yoyo4233@aol.com

I've got a question...does anyone know what might have happened to the records of all these mining companies? ie American Lead & Zinc, etc. Someone mentioned awhile ago that there was a new mining museum headed up by the Univ. Missouri-Rolla. Would they have them? I have asked at both the Galena Mining Museum & the Archival Library & neither has any mining company records, beyond photos or city directories. Hi! Just wanted to let everyone know I uploaded my family tree to Rootsweb. I have 4,106 individuals from all over the place, including several families from Jasper, and all over Missouri. I hope this can help someone. You can find my family tree at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=witcher77 If anyone has any corrections or additional info for my tree, please let me know. Good Luck!! My great-grandfather, Elliott Leroy FOSTER, was born Sep 1896 in Joplin, and died 6 Feb 1936 in Carl Junction. He was killed in a mining accident (a rock fell on his head). He was married to Betha Irene JACKSON, d/o William JACKSON and Lillie BROCKWELL. Elliott's father was William FOSTER. That is all the information I have on him. I can trace the JACKSON and BROCKWELL lines quite well, but have nothing on the FOSTERs. Any help would be appreciated. Tara - Witcher77@aol.com
Marriage records office is no longer in the Carthage courthouse.. It is located in the Bank of America building, 2nd floor on the north west corner of the Carthage square. Divorce is a court action- you'll need to check the index's in both courthouses, but the file will be housed in Carthage. Death - depending on what your looking for (wills, probate & more) the best place to go is the Jasper county Records Annex, 125 N. Lincoln Carthage. Good Luck! Here's some courthouse info: Jasper County Vital Records Office Jasper County Clerk Courthouse Carthage, MO 64836 (417) 358-0441 or (800) 404-0421 Also from http://www.rootsweb.com/~mojasper/vitals.html Jasper County Courthouse 601 Pearl Joplin, Missouri 64801 Hours: 8-5, M-F Office of Circuit Court: Some records were burned, mostly survive from 1877. If looking for divorce or other civil action check both courthouses ------------------- The divorces are at the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court. I haven't yet been to the Jasper County Courthouse, but the people in Barry and Lawrence counties were extremely helpful. They let me back into the vault to look for divorces, which are with the other lawsuits. You'll probably want to bring a buddy, since the books are very large and heavy and two people makes it quite a bit easier. Also, bring good ladder-climbing shoes and clothes you can get dusty in. - Heather On Thu, 7 Mar 2002, Ron Grassi wrote: > Marie, > > You will probably get that information from the County Recorder or County > Clerk's office. Sorry Marie, I don't have an address. I'm in Iowa, originginally from Pittsburg, KS. I would think you could find the address by checking for the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage. The address should be online, or on the Jasper County web page. Good luck! ciao, Ron
