Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1MB.2ACI/1915.4 Message Board Post: My father tells me that his father worked in mines, but like your other correspondent noted, these were primarily over in Galena KS or Picher OK. My father vividly remembers the labor related violence in Galena and apparently himself worked in the mines as a child of 8 or so. I will ask my father to remember what he can about the mines and possible ways we can locate workers. Please feel free to write me if you like.

    2. Tim & Brigitte Hostetter
    3. Thanks to all for the information. I've found that the townships listed in the 1870 census include Centre Creek, Georgia, Jackson, Jasper, Marion, McDonald Mineral North Fork, Preston and Sarcoxic. There are quite a few that don't show up on the map from 1876 ( Centre Creek, Georgia & North Fork) and those that don't show up on the census (Sheridan, Lincoln, Twin Grove, Madison, Galena, Joplin and Union). Somewhere between 1870 and 1876 some names changed I guess. I will keep looking for what Joplin Twp may have been called. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ned72@webtv.net> To: <MOJASPER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 23, 2002 12:41 AM Subject: Re: [MOJASPER] Joplin Township? > "The Heritage County Atlas Reprints Volume 6, An Illustrated Historical > Atlas Map of Jasper County, Mo" Published by Brink, McDonough & Co, 1876 > shows that there was a Joplin Township in 1876. 3. Heather, I have also been in touch with Larry Motley and it was his information that got me started. Lousia Jane Morris was her maiden name and a cousin of mine said they called her Liza Jane. I would like very much to have the picture. My grandfather William Arthur Motley also thought Louisa(his mother) was born in Ind. but I believe she was born in Ga. and they had been to Ind before moving to Mo. Louisa`s parents were born in Ala. according to the other children on the census`s I`v found. He also said his father James Henry Motley was born in Mo but he was born in Ky. I will send you information snail mail if you like. 1. Re: [MOJASPER] Joplin Township?
    2. "The Heritage County Atlas Reprints Volume 6, An Illustrated Historical Atlas Map of Jasper County, Mo" Published by Brink, McDonough & Co, 1876 shows that there was a Joplin Township in 1876. It was east of Galena Township and between Galena and Jackson Township. On the map it was in parts of both Range 33 and 32 in the East/west grid and Townships 27 and 28 in the North/South. (Don't get confused in "townships" for some reason the "real estate" maps showed numbered "range" values on the e/w direction and numbered "townships" in the N/S direction - so there were numbered townships as well "named" townships - the latter appear to be political, whereas the former were to identify "real estate") The n/s line separating Galena and Joplin Townships appears to be Joplin city's North Main street. The next township north of Joplin was Mineral. Joplin township included Webb City and Carterville.   Although this doesn't answer your question "Was Joplin TOwnship in existence in 1870?" I hope this helps John

    1. Re: [MOJASPER] 1860 slave schedule
    2. Heather, 1850 Jasper County Slave Schedule Sarah Motley male age 40, female age 37, male 16 and female 15. Based on the sex and ages, it would appear that these were the same four slaves you found in 1860. Column 6, fugitive from the state, is blank in the 1850 Jasper County Slave schedule and in the other 1850 schedule I have read. I did not read 1860 Jasper but the Lawrence Co. slave schedule for 1860 has a number of check marks in that column, some are next to the names of children. This column was blank or not used in the 1860 Newton and McDonald County slave schedules so I had not attached any significance to the rather random check marks in the Lawrence County schedule..until you posed the question. Long answer, I do not know the meaning of column 6. Bill Landers Cape Cod, MA
