Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1MB.2ACI/1915.5 Message Board Post: Kay, I found an 1874 geological map of Jasper County posted at http://198.209.227.6/maps/data/DM55228959.asp. I couldn't get it to print well, but I can make out most details when I "zoom in" Another interesting site I found is one in which a genealogy hobbyist posted photos of the mines in Ottawa County, OK. This site is located at http://www.homestead.com/schehrer2/. The pictures will give you a flavor of what the boomtown Tri State area looked like--most all the mines in the tri-state area were built and closed down at roughly the same times. Both my father and my grandfather (when living) repeatedly mentioned that miners were always moving around to different employers in the area between Ottawa County, OK, Cherokee County, KS, and Jasper County MO. . As a child my father moved around between Picher, OK, Baxter Springs, KS and Galena/Joplin MO. When I went to "look" for my great-grandfather in the 1900 census (he had died very young and no one knew anything about that side of the family), I "found" him working and living in Cherokee County KS while his parents and younger siblings lived in Joplin. So if you are having any trouble locating relatives that you knew were in the area and worked the mines, try "looking" for them in all of those states/counties.

I'd be interested to find out so I could search that area in the future. 3. Hello, I am researching the Apperson family living in Galena Twp, Jasper Co, Mo around the turn of the century. Ida Hostetter married Apperson. In the 1900 census she was a widow with four children, Edward (22) Harvey (19) Emma ? (14) Charles (10) In 1920 I find Edward and Charles living in Galena Twp. I would like to find out more about this family if any of you are part of this tree. I can fill in the Hostetter part for someone who is interested. Thank you in advance and hope to make a connection. Brigitte Hostetter

By name, or do you just browse through all available photos? Thank you in advance.... I found more on George W. and Benjamin, too.

    2. I am searching for any information on Wqtkins in Joplin area. All I know is that my great grandfather died there in 1872 and was taken back to Syracuse, New York for burial. Are there death records for that period? Some time back I had a contact regarding Watkins in Joplin, but have since misplaced that communication - would appreciate hearing from anyone with info. Spiva Library, Missouri Southern State College · 3950 E Newman Rd · Joplin, MO 64801-1595 They say they have an extensive collection on mining maps, with mine names, etc. You could probably exactly find the land and the mines that were created on the sold land. UMissouri Rolla has a collection with info pertaining to the mines. If you go to http://www.umr.edu/~whmcinfo/, there is actually a picture of Jasper County Miners at the Dividend Mine in 1902 ! They list their collection and have a "fact sheet" that describes mining activities

The 1900 census places John Holmes (b. 1836, Illinois) and wife Elizabeth (born 1848) with three of their seven children in Joplin Ward 3. The children who still lived with the parents were William, b. 1874, Ben H born 1888 and Virginia, born 1896. I believe another son was John, born 1882 and working as a laborer on a farm in Cherokee County KS. at this census If you know anything about the descendants of these children, i would really appreciate hearing from you.
