To get a copy, go to ancientfaces.com and download the photo there. Sending from my computer takes 12 minutes and crashes my computer. Nancy
FYI If any of you are on AIM you can transfer pictures and files quickly through there and it doesn't tie up your e-mail. You can also zip or stuff your files to cut them down in size. Kathryn

I need to try answer these questions if possible. If you can answer one or all please let me know? THANKS SO MUCH!!!! 01. Calvin JAMES went to Southeast Kansas, where he was one of the earliest settlers. He "broke out" some prairie land and built some cabins on the west side of Spring River near the mouth Shoal Creek which is now Cherokee Co., Kansas. He properly done this after 1835 because he had a permit from David M. Harlan to be on land. David didn't arrive untill 1835 from GA 01A. He lived near Spring River near mouth of the Shoal Creek. Then near Carthage, Mo., he had land were he built three cabins. Spring River runs northof Carthage, Jasper County. Tucker Ford on Spring was used by troops during the battle of Carthage. A spring, east of the center of town, was originally named James Spring. The names of this spring has changed, found nothing to indicate why it was first named James. Which one is the right one. Looks like the last one is more detailed.? 02. Calvin JAMES appears in the Deerfield Township, Van Buren Co., MO., Census of 1840. Please note that Calvin married Perlina Tucker 26 March 1839, Cass Co., Mo 03. Then in Census of 1850 for McDonald Co., MO., Family Dwelling # 147., Calvin 36 TN farmer, (real estate value $100), Perlina 31 TN, David Solon 9 MO, William W 4 MO, James Franklin 2 MO. This was taken in 53rd District.. 04. He probably later moved to Jasper County, Missouri, just a few miles east across the state line, and served as a Justice of the Peace in 1855. Is there any proof of this?? 05. Calvin JAMES was appointed first postmaster 8 Dec 1858, at Brushville, McGee Co., KS., for a year or two. This info is found in a book called Kansas Post Offices, or similar. The stuff on Lowell and Tennessee Prairie says that the office was discontinued at the time of the battle of Carthage (date?). Where was Brushville and did it close on account of Calvin death? 06. Calvin had built three cabins on his place, and about 1859 Quaker Valley Mills, a school was taught in one of them by the daughter of Dr. Lisle. Does someone know about is? Sure would like to verily. 07. 1860 Calvin 46 Tennessee, Perlina 41 Tennessee, David S. 18 Missouri This is from a Census but which and where is the rest of the information? 08. He died before the Civil War and is buried near Carthage, Missouri. This came from my grandmother sister, where and when?? Copied from the Modern Light, January 27, 1898 Edited by Dorothy Fanoele A family named JAMES, brother in law to DAVE HARLAN, had a settlement by his permit, about a quarter mile above the present location of the Quaker Valley Mills, having three log houses by the old road near the bank of the river. In one of these houses a daughter of Dr. Lisle taught what was probably the first school in the limits of what is now Cherokee County about 1859.[Carol Louise Hartung Rini.FTW] This is from Norman S. I am not sure of any dates. Just guessing that they were probably born late 1870s-1880s, not even sure where. They had 3 sons, Hubert,Gilbert, and Edwin (my grandfather) that were possibly born in Newtonia or in or around Jasper County. My Grandfather was b.1909 and his Dad died when he was very young. Sarah then married a Jess/Jessie Spoon and died about 2 years or so after Charles. The boys were then raised (I believe) by a sister or brother to Sarah. Thanks for any help.
Is there where I can go on the internet get a plat map of Deerfield Township, Mo.? The Kansas book said that Calvin's JAMES place was on the west side of Spring River, above the mouth of Shoal Creek. Calvin JAMES went to Southeast Kansas, where he was one of the earliest settlers. He "broke out" some prairie land and built some cabins on the west side of Spring River near the mouth Shoal Creek which is now Cherokee Co., Kansas. Can anyone answer this? I know that this happen in Ga., on me before. Please keep in mind that Calvin James was using the permit of his brother-in-law to be on Cherokee Land. Terry Terry, Your mentioning that Van Buren County was renamed Cass County made me think of something. We know that many counties were originally large, and they were later split into smaller counties. I wonder if Jasper County was one of the large ones that was split up, and McDonald County was originally part of it. Then Calvin could have moved from Van Buren to Jasper, then the part he lived in was split off as McDonald. This is all wild-eyed speculation, of course, but it's a possibility. When I go to the library again I will look into Missouri history. Norman
