It does cost money, but I had good luck using USSearch for finding living family members, specifically my father's sister whom he'd never met. The more information you have about somebody before you request a search, the better they are at locating them. The URL is http://www.ussearch.com/ Would you know an approximate birth date and place for your father? It might be on your birth certificate. What do living family members know about him and where he went? Would your aunts and uncles or grandparents if they are still living know who your father's parents were? If your parents were legally divorced, and you know the county, you could get a copy of the divorce record. That might have some clues about where your father was at a particular time. The divorce record will often also have the date and place of the marriage. You might also want to check the Joplin City Directory for the year you were born and see where you father was living at that time. I haven't tried it myself, but you might be able to write the reference librarian there and ask them to look it up for you. http://www.joplinpubliclibrary.org/ Good luck! - Heather On 18 Jul 2002 FosFam@msn.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1MB.2ACI/2037 > > Message Board Post: > > I am very new to this whole searching for relatives. Hi, I would suggest starting with white page sites, I use switchboard (url is below) since it's updated regularly. do a search on Robert Foster in Joplin MO. If that turns out not to help, then try just foster and see if you can find any relatives that way. Good luck. Be sure to use the Mormon (Latter Day Saints) site. It has the biggest genealogy data base in the world. You might also go to google.com and write in your family name and see it anything comes up. In my experience it probably will. Also, you might use the some source and write in "Genealogy". There are many fee sites that off software for sale. They usually do not cost much. This can get you started. Donna, Thank you very much, I sure do appreciate your help, have been researching the Porter line and there are so many branches, thought I'd try this one again. thanks again, Maureen in Ohio
Regarding the Joplin Globe article on the mining shafts being closed.....I'm glad to hear this. I remember my father telling us how back in the late 1920's he and other friends would ride motorcycles down those chat mounds.....one of his friends was killed doing this. Fortunately, when he and my mother got married, one of the conditions was that he stop riding motorcycles and never go near the chat mounds again - I guess the promise held...he never did. Thanks Brenda - a very interesting article. My father worked in the mines in the tri-state area, so I have a personal interest.
My gg-grandfather, John William Motley, was in Washita County, near Greer County in 1900. There were some other Motleys out there mentioned in John's Union pension application. I'll have to dig that up and let you know. He moved the family to Searcy County, Arkansas in 1905 or so, and wasn't in Oklahoma for very long. - Heather On Wed, 17 Jul 2002, Norma Bremer wrote: > Hello, I need to reply to this as I have a Motley (Georgia Root Motley ) > That signed my grandmothers wedding register in 1894 in Willowvale Greer > County OK, Because of the nature of the signature, I am replying as my > grandmothers husband was a Johnson B: in MO Jasper County in 1870. Hi! I have a Luther Motley who married Frances Woods. I have that he was born December 27, 1850, I'm not sure whether that was Missouri or Kentucky, and that he died December 30, 1945. He is buried in the Dry Valley Cemetery, which is in Newton County, MO. His father was Edwin M. Motley from Kentucky (probably Allen County) born Feb 4, 1826 and died Sept 7, 1893. Also buried in the Dry Valley Cemetery. His Mother was Amanda Moody born in Kentucky 5/7/1833 and died March 27, 1905. Also buried in Dry Valley Cemeter. I got the relationship information from other Motley researchers, so it isn't original to me. However, I did visit the Dry Valley Cemetery myself. Is this your man? - Heather On 17 Jul 2002 sgottgriffin@aol.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: MOTLEY > Classification: Lookup > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1MB.2ACI/2036 > > Message Board Post: > > Looking for any information on lineage of LUTHER MOTLEY born in Carterville, Missouri. >

Hello, I need to reply to this as I have a Motley (Georgia Root Motley ) That signed my grandmothers wedding register in 1894 in Willowvale Greer County OK, Because of the nature of the signature, I am replying as my grandmothers husband was a Johnson B: in MO Jasper County in 1870. James Leroy! and Georgia signed cousin. But it was a note from Portsmouth Iowa. Which is where my grandmother was born (Waterloo Iowa). The Johnson's and the Wolfs were in IA in 1880. The Johnson were in MO in 1870. There is a connection but it is alluding me.I will look in data but I fear no other Motleys. Ennis rings a bell.Though.Anyhow you can look in www.normasplace.com and maybe you might recognize some of the names. Is that the area of Mineral twp? I seam to remember seeing some Johnson's in Mineral twp in the 1870 or 80 census or both. In 1875 there was a farm of about 80 acres owned by a Johnson within about 1/4 mile of the Spring River and the Lattin Farm which was in Mineral twp. A Johnson married one of Dimmick Lattin's daughters. Webb City is in Jasper County - just north of Joplin up Range Line. It's really almost contiguous now - business, cemeteries and such. Margaret
Actually, I just realized something. Ancestry.com *does* have an index for the US census in Missouri from 1830 - 1870. It just isn't linked to the images. Sometimes you use the page number in the index to go to the correct image, but sometimes it's hard to find that page among the images, if they aren't broken down by township. - Heather On Tue, 16 Jul 2002, [iso-8859-1] Adhani wrote: > Oh, wow!
