This is where he was in 1880. I checked the 1870 census and cannot find Galena Township. In comparing the list of townships for 1870 to the 1874 township map I noticed several changes. Does anyone on the list know what the name of Galena Township was before 1874. Sharon

Wow, what a site!!! Thanks for passing it on. I was born and grew up on a farm just north of Joplin but left the area after high school. My dad and several neighbors worked in the mines. I could kick myself for not asking more questions about mining - such as the actual process of producing those horrendous chat piles (but gee, they were great to slide down on!!). I still have great specimens of lead and zinc ore, beautiful pieces of quartz, and "tiff" that he would bring home in his lunch bucket. (Who knows, there might be some Uranium too!!) Thanks again. John

It is available from the Family History Center of the LDS, and each volume has a surname index. Their website gives details on the newspapers and years covered. Also, you could request microfilm of the newspapers from the State Historical Society of Missouri via Interlibrary Loan at your local public library. If you have an exact death date, this might be your best bet, otherwise, you are going to be reading a *lot* of old newspapers. I find that fun, but it sure can make my eyes tired. Anyway, the State Historical Society of Missouri has a publican that lists all their newspapers on microfilm. You can buy it from them for $14. Their web site is: http://www.system.missouri.edu/shs/ This publication says that they have the following Carthage papers on microfilm for the dates you need: Weekly Banner: Mar 10, 1870 - Dec 23 1875 Aug 31, 1876 Feb 1 - Nov 8, 1877 Jan 3, 1878 - July 3, 1879 Jan 1 - Dec 3 1880 Jan 5, 1882 - Dec 29, 1887 Weekly Advance Jun 29, 1876 Jasper County Democrat Aug 20, 1884- Aug 21, 1885 Daily Patriot Jun 27, July 1, 2, 6, 7, Aug 11, 1876 Aug 13, 1877 - May 27, 1878 Jan 3 - Dec 29, 1881 Peoples Press [Many dates 1872-1881] Carthage Press 1881- 1882 and 1885 Republican Jun - Dec 1884 In Web City for 1870-1885 New Century Jan 5 - Feb 23, 1877 - Heather

She thought I was a lookup volunteer and posted on my original message. Sorry. K
Wandering around the internet I came across a site of special interest to those (especially out-of-towners) who have been seeking information of residents of the area during the mining boom and who may be bewildered by frequent references to mountain-like chat piles and mineral-laced water pools which mark abandoned mining sites in the area. John Schehrer has posted some advice re research and a bevy of pictures showing mining sites mainly in Ottawa County OK which abuts Jasper and Newton counties in MO and KS forming what is termed the Tri-State area. The Webb City MO-based Southwest Missouri Railway (a streetcar system) was extended to Picher OK to help miners who continued to live in Jasper Co MO reach the active mines there, as the mines in MO were closed Try it: <http://www.homestead.com/schehrer2/research.html> At the bottom of the "Research" page hit "Back to Start" and enjoy the pictures and other info.

Many of the first names tie into my husband's family's names in both IA and Indiana. In particular, Samuel Combs married Mary Pinkley in Clay Co. IN and owned property there. Then they moved to Illinois and then Iowa. They had a son named Andrew J. Combs, another named James Wilson Combs. Some of the girls were named Sarah and Alice. Could you please tell me if you or Shirley Jameson are descendents of this family line?
