It really shows the box seats, and indeed looks to me as if they aren't covered by the roof. I even like the newspaper clippings. I got a good laugh with Knell_Fairground3_copy.jpg I was watching as it opened and in it's large size before it fully loaded, I thought the roof was really torn up. I was thinking it must have been some wind. Then the picture was there and I could see the paper was in pieces. I do like the view from the stadium. Every new angle helps. I also did a search of the Postcards at Joplin Public Library and found the Trotting Park was also known as the Barbee Park Race Track. http://tinyurl.com/8yz44 Click on Description Barbee Park Racetrack (Joplin, Mo.); Barbee, Gilbert; Racetracks (Horseracing)--Missouri--Joplin; Today's Joplinites can scarcely imagine the thrilling events that once took place in southwest Joplin from 1872 until 1909. The excitement began in 1872 with the construction of a half-mile racing track. By 1876, the Jockey Club and Fair Association had expanded the grounds, which stretched from 17th to 20th Streets between Murphy Avenue and Maiden Lane. In 1879, the sprawling 40-acre site, known as the Joplin Exposition, boasted the racing track, stables, stalls and pens for the animals, plus shelters for agricultural implements and carriages, all of which, according to the 1883 History of Jasper County, Missouri, "experienced horsemen pronounce one of the best in the United States." The park also featured a grandstand and a 3000-seat amphitheatre. One of the most spectacular buildings was an octagonal-shaped "art and floral hall," which was two stories high, topped with an observatory "commanding a most excellent view of Joplin and the surrounding country." In addition to ! the horse racing, the Exposition track also presented chariot races, military tournaments, political rallies, and fire department competitions. After the Exposition wound down in the late 1890s, Gilbert Barbee purchased the site, renamed it Barbee Park, and kept the racetrack going for several more years. The legendary "Gib" Barbee, who served as the area's Democratic political boss, owned the Joplin Globe newspaper and the infamous House of Lords bar. Barbee hit some hard times in April 1909, when a fire destroyed the grandstand. Fire fighters managed to save the stables and other buildings, but the grandstand was a total loss at $6,500. In 1927, Barbee's son O.H. cleared and leveled the acreage for residential development. He built the Barbee Court addition right on the old race course, preserving the graceful oval of elms trees that once surrounded it. The outline of the racetrack can be traced by looping around from 17th to 19th Streets from Maiden Lane to the alley between Porter and Harlem Avenues. The stone and brick bungalow-type homes in Barbee Court all faced on Harlem, the homestretch of the former racetrack. Sources: Gibbons, Charles. Angling in the Archives. Joplin: H. So far I haven't had much luck. I've been surprised that I can't seem to find anything on the Miami, OK grounds where they have their rodeos. It's been a long time since I was there. I really don't remember it very well. I'm wondering how many race tracks were in the tri-state area? Jasper, Newton Co. MO, Cherokee Co. KS and Ottawa Co. OK. The counties around them would also be of interest. I can't help but wonder about who constructed the grandstands? Thank you again for sharing. Orlena

I keep getting: Imaging An internal error has occurred. Yes, I also believe the 1905 postcard is the earlier stand without the dormers. It has 12 front support posts. They apparently later built an uncovered section, then the larger 13 support posts stand with the dormers and connected them all. I've seen a couple of postcards that seem to indicate they may have removed the roof and roof supports and used the older stand that way for awhile. Anyway, the area seemed larger than the uncovered area between the two stands would have been, if the older stand had been completely removed. Usually by clicking on the enlargement feature in the bottom right corner, I can enlarge the attachment photo. This time it doesn't appear to be working. We do get a good view of the 1905 crowd. Note the lady above the 7, I'd sure hate to see the damage done to her skirt and petticoats. They'd have to be filthy also. Lady above the 90 seems to be just a little shorter length in white or very light color. Some of the other ladies seem more practical, if not as fashionable. The dormered stand in the Joplin Library postcard, doesn't show it very well, but it seems to have some box seats in front between the staircases into the stands behind the fence next to the track. The roof doesn't look like it extends over enough to more than possibly just cover it. http://tinyurl.com/ahx44 In the Buck Special racing picture Robert attached, people seem to be both in that area and behind a different fence next to the track. In your 1905 it also seems to have people between the stand and the fence. Are there any postcards of the Joplin Race track? I wonder if the same builder built many of the same type stands in the area? I don't know how long the Miami, OK racetrack has been there. Thank you so much for sharing your postcards and information. I do really appreciate the old postcards printed in Germany. Orlena
