    3. Paradise Cemetery is north of Carthage about 6 miles on 71 Hwy . Take the M highway exit and turn left. Just across the overpass is Paradise cemetery on the right. It is actually on the NW corner of 71 Hwy and M Hwy. Hope that helps. -----Original Message----- From: Orlena [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 1:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOJASPER] Paradise Cemetery Mike and everyone, On the Lat-Long map, it seems that is MO M to the west of the Hwy 71 interchange, and MO N to the east. I don't know about you all, but I'm directionally handicapped enough without them confusing me with one road having 2 different alpha letters. I'm used to streets changing names at County and State lines, but I can't help but wonder the reason here. Orlena Orlena <[email protected]> wrote: Mike, Have you run onto Lat-Long.com site. It can be really good or a complete zero. http://www.lat-long.com/ Check this out. http://www.lat-long.com/Missouri/cemetery.html enter Paradise, for this example, into the search feature. If more than one cemetery is found they will all appear. They only have one Paradise Cemetery. Click on it. The map that comes up has 2 options, Satellite and Hybrid. The Hybrid is, for this purpose, the best. (Satellite alone, as with GNIS and TopoZone often confuse me.) Click on Hybrid then zoom in using the + . I'm sure you don't need this detailed instructions, but it may help someone else. The directional arrows allows you to see the entire area map. Using the down arrow, it looks as if north of Carthage one could get on the other road that seems to run along the west side Hwy 71 and get to the cemetery without having to figure out the interchange. What do you think? I've already sent them this link, but I hadn't followed the other road back then. I haven't been in that area for many, many, years, so I don't remember it at all. ~~~~~~~~~~~ According to the 2 Cemetery Lists I have of Jasper County cemeteries: Continue on 71 past Joplin and Carthage. PARADISE: Northwest corner junciton Hwy 71 and Rte M Road (Base Line Road); north of Carthage, south of Jasper. (Their spellings) another one PARADISE: Start at intersection of Hwy 71 and State Route M south of Jasper. Cemetery located in the north west corner of intersection. They do agree on Route M, however this map has State Hwy N written on it, which is still Base Line Blvd. I'm changing it to M, as that's apparently correct. I just noticed, my map is on 4 pages, 2 top and 2 bottom, when fit together and overlapped as needed, I have the complete map except there's no legend. Paradise Cemetery is on the end of each one. The page west of Paradise Cemetery is indeed M, while the page East of Paradise Cemetery was a writo N. ~~~~~~~ Everyone should write this information down somewhere. If you are interested in Jasper County these can be the folks to contact. They have been most helpful. For their records, they'd like a written request even though they do help over the telephone. They can find the needed information Book Page etc. to get your request at the courthouse handled more swiftly. Steve Weldon, who has helped me, is very good. 3. Hi Orlena, Again, you have come thru for another user on this list! :) As to the Lat-Long map showing M on one side and N on the other, that is USUALLY how the county designates the roadways. Having driven down to Kansas a number of times, and also going over to Joplin from Pittsburg, you will notice when driving on the highways that the roads are shown with one number or letter on one side, and another letter AFTER/BEFORE that one on the other. Hope this helps you from getting confused when driving again. lol Ron in Iowa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Orlena" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 1:46 PM Subject: Re: [MOJASPER] Paradise Cemetery > Mike and everyone, > > On the Lat-Long map, it seems that is MO M to the west of the Hwy 71 > interchange, and MO N to the east. > > I don't know about you all, but I'm directionally handicapped enough > without them confusing me with one road having 2 different alpha letters. > > I'm used to streets changing names at County and State lines, but I can't > help but wonder the reason here. > > Orlena > > Orlena <[email protected]> wrote: > Mike, > > Have you run onto Lat-Long.com site. 3. Orlena... I believe that what you say is very informative for people who do not live in the Four-State area and are not familiar with the fact that Joplin is the shopping/medical metropolis for the SE corner of Kansas, the NE corner of Oklahoma, the NW corner of Arkansas and the SW corner of Missouri. Growing up in SE Kansas demonstrated this to me from childhood. We shopped in Joplin, our TV stations were in Pittsburg and Joplin and more importantly, should we need surgical or trauma care, we were taken to St John's Hospital in Joplin. I know about Freeman's Hosp, but am not as familiar with their services. Several members of my family passed away at St John's, but their homes and burial places were in SE Kansas communities, such as Cherokee Co, Labette Co, Montgomery Co, Wilson Co and Crawford Co in Kansas, just as you stated, and the funeral homes that provided the services were from the home communities. I did not even know until I began doing genealogy that Joplin is in both Jasper and Newton Counties. Amazed me. Thanks for your post bringing this information to the attention of the people who live out of the area. 3. Hi Orlena, I appreciate all the help you have/are giving to people on the list, and do realize that just because it says someone passed away in Joplin, doesn't really mean that, BUT...the funeral homes are a very good place to start. If they didn't handle the arrangements, sometimes they have information as to exactly WHO DID. And the funeral homes in Joplin, Webb City, and also in Neosho and even Pittsburg, Kansas, ....where I am from originally, have been very helpful to me. A lot of people don't even think of checking with funeral homes, and I didn't either, when I started this hobby/obsession called genealogy, back in the late 1980s. But a friend, who happened to be a funeral director, overheard me talking one evening about getting an obit from down around that area, and it was he who suggested using the funeral records. He told me that the obit is usually taken from the funeral record, but that there is USUALLY more genealogical information contained in the funeral record than can be printed in an obit. And, I've found that to be true in a lot of cases! That is why I always suggest checking www.funeralnet.com. It has funeral home listings from around the World, and I've found that most funeral homes are very helpful when it comes to working on a family tree. I do want to thank you for all the help you have given me, and also others on this list! ciao! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1MB.2ACI/2933.1 Message Board Post: Since you have the place and date of death, go to www.funeralnet.com and find the funeral homes in Joplin. Call them, letting them know you are doing genealogy research on your family line, and ask them if they handled the arrangements for the funeral. When you find the funeral home that DID handle the arrangements, ask them to please send you a copy of the Record of Funeral. The funeral record is usually where the information for an obit is found, and sometimes there is quite a bit of genealogical information in the funeral record, if the informant is a family member. Sometimes, there is also a copy of the obit attached to the funeral record. The funeral homes in Joplin have helped me quite a bit in the past, so I wouldn't think there should be any problems. Good luck in your searching! Ron in Iowa
