These Hills are not connected with the Hillys by any chance, are they? I only ask that because my mother's family (Kollenborn) is represented in the Avila cemetery along with a family they married into, the Hillys. Some of the Kollenborns changed their surname to Kollenburn (with a "U"), and so perhaps a Hill changed to a Hilly or vice versa. William KollenbOrn married Charlotte Hilly, and I think it was John KollenbUrn that married Nancy Hilly. Their father's name was Henry Hilly, and he is buried there in Avilla. The sextons of the Carterville Cemetery are Bob & Pat West (417) 673-2049 Renessa Lewis List Mom -----Original Message----- From: Andrea Heslin [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, March 20, 2006 7:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [MOJASPER] Carterville Cemetrey - Jones Ruby, I am going to suggest a step or two that will lead you into doing the legwork on this. Since you know where she died and you know her name and date, research Webb City. They will likely have a website for their community listing the name of their town attractions, municipal buildings etc. Most communities do have their own website. You should be able to locate the name of the Newspaper for that community. An even better way will be to call information and ask them for the phone number for the Webb City Library. (Assuming Webb City has a library.) You should be able to get information from them regarding the name of the local newspaper and whether they have them on microfilm. Once you are armed with that information, contact your local library and ask them if they can get you the newspaper editions for the date of her death and the 2 or 3 days following her death that are on microfilm for interlibrary loan use. Most libraries will do this service for you. They may charge you a small few but will be worth it. It will give you the opportunity to research the newspapers for yourself and the thrill of discovery as well. Additionally, when you make your phone calls, try to locate the number for the sexton of the Carterville Cemetery. He/She will be able to give you the exact location and information of the grave if they have it in record and possibly even a map of the cemetery depending on whether they have one available. Hope you will find this to be of help for your search. Some women also had 4 and 5 husbands. They married early. They married men much older than themselves. They were still having children at the same time as they were having grandchildren. In some families, the women married out of the family and under different surnames their children and grandchildren married back into it. Even the official documents can have errors on them, which causes even more problems verifying our research. I answered a query from Theresa Dial wanting information about the twin sister of Amon Dial. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jasper&m=2960 She also posted a query on the Dial Message Board earlier in which she says Agnes disappeared in 1874. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.dial&m=446 I'm not a Dial researcher, I only posted what I found via Google and Federal Census. I did find the family in the 1860 and 1870 census, and as long as they were the correct family, there was not a twin for Amon listed. I attached those census to that post. Do you know what happened to Amon's twin? Did she survive even though she is not on the 1860 census with the family? I also noted the two Phillips in 1870 census. Ages there were 5 years apart. The Phillip with Amon in the household, ages did not all agree with the 1860 census. This often happens. Sometimes, it's the dates when the census were taken, and sometimes... it's just wrong. According to the 1860 census he would have been closer to 40 than 45. Did Theresa ever contact you? So far she hasn't answered my posts here. Orlena

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1MB.2ACI/2962 Message Board Post: Searching for information on the family of my ggg grandfather Hubbard Taylor and ggg grandmother, Sidney (Spradley) Taylor. Hubbard Taylor was born about 1813/1814 in Kentucky and died October 24, 1865 in Linn Creek, Camden County Missouri. Sidney Spradley was born about 1814/1815 in either Alabama or Tennessee. Her death date and place of burial are unknown. Hubbard Taylor and Sidney Spradley were married in Madison County, Alabama on July 21, 1834. As far as my research has determined, they were the parents of six children. There may have been other children, but these are the children that I have found listed on census records. 1. William M. Taylor - Born about 1836 2. *Elizabeth Taylor - Born about 1838 3. John Taylor - Born about 1840 4. Josephine Taylor - Born about 1842 5. Sidney Taylor - Born about 1845 6. Missouri Taylor - Born about 1851 *Elizabeth (Taylor) Lindsey is my ancestor. Through my research, I found records that Hubbard Taylor briefly served in the Civil War and fought for the Union in the Missouri Home Guards. On August 26, 1891, at the age of 76 years, Sidney Taylor applied for a Widow’s pension under the “Widow’s Act of June 27, 1890.” Below are excerpts taken from Hubbard Taylor's pension file. Note: I have made some corrections to the original transcript for the ease in reading. DEPOSITION - CASE OF SIDNEY TAYLOR, NO.525400 On this 15th day of January 1900, at Scotland, County of Jasper, State of Missouri, before me, Jno. L. Cowles, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Sidney Taylor, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says: I am about 86 years of age, no occupation Residence and post office Scotland, Jasper County Missouri. I am the widow of Hubbard Taylor who was a member of Company B, Osage Co, Regiment, Missouri Home Guards from July 1861 to December 1861. That was all the service he ever rendered either military or naval. The soldier died at Linn Creek, Camden County Missouri, on October 24 1865. My maiden name was Sidney Spradley. I was raised in Lawrence County Alabama and married Hubbard Taylor in Madison County Alabama when I was about 18 years old. The date of my marriage as near as I can get at it was the 24th day of July 1834 = now I fix that date this way: A few days before we had a big camp meeting, Mr. Taylor went to Huntsville Alabama about 12 miles from where we lived to get the license about three days after that we got a preacher down at the Camp meeting to go home with us and marry us. The preachers name was Hawkins a Methodist preacher. When I made out my papers first I di! dn't know what they wanted exactly and of course didn't remember very well then after that I got to studying over it and I remembered a good deal. Then about a year or more ago I told judge Cossart of Chauncey Camden County Missouri what I have told you here and he wrote to Madison County Alabama and got a copy of the license which I now hand you and that shows a license was granted us July 21 1834, but he could not get any record of a return being made on that license because the preacher who married us probably didn't make any return. Question. Had you or the soldier ever been married before? Answer: No sir, neither one of us. Question: How do you know he had not been? Answer: Oh I had known him before he was old enough to marry he was only 21 when he married me. Question: Had he any brothers and sisters living? Answer: I don't know of any living. The last one died about 2 years ago that was a brother, an Eben Taylor who was in an Illinois Regt. don't know what one, was a pensioner for wounds. Hubbard had six sisters and 3 brothers. They all scattered and the Lord only knows what became of them. I had six sisters and three brothers but I never saw any of them after I married and they all lived in Lawrence County Alabama, the last I heard of them many years ago I know two of my brothers are dead. William was living in Huntsville Alabama the last I heard of him. I was married in the house of Mr. Taylor's sister’s daughter a Mrs. Benjamin Tipton, they lived in Madison County Alabama 12 miles from Huntsville on the Huntsville and Nashville main road right close to a little country town called McNulty then. I never heard what became of Mrs. Tipton if living she is older than I am. There was three Tipton’s at my wedding one man and two women there was Elizabeth Campbell and Richard Campbell and some others whose names I can't remember. Jeff Bell came in right after I was married - There were two [not sure if that word is 'two'] Derrick’s, McNulty’s and McDaniel’s were all neighbors. I don’t recall we stayed there over six weeks after we married then we moved out to Illinois a place called Washington, I think where Hubbard’s father was. Only there a few days then father and all of us come to Jefferson City Mo. Lived in town at first then in the country altogether making that our pos! t office until some time in 1857 left there in the fall and came out to Camden Co Mo. Now I 've told you all I know about my case. W H Conway is my son-in-law and Sidney Conway is his wife and my daughter. Conway has known me for over 20 years and Sidney was born in 1846.
