Shades of City Life Brought to Light by Times Reporter The transactions in the "last sensation" line yesterday at the Police Court showed a decline and falling off in first class cases. W. W. COOK, the City Attorney, discoursed at some length upon the merits and demerits of the two wife beaters, O'DONNEL and TORBET. O'DONNEL is as yet corked down in the "stone jug," while TORBET was bade go and sin no more. THE CANNIBALISTIC EAR AND NOSE EATER, Mike GALLAGHER, who attempted but failed to "chaw" off Tom MANGEN's nose and ears, is still in jail amusing himself chasing the mammoth vermin that dispute with prisoners the possession of the blankets this cold weather. Charlie HARRIS said he had not the least idea of breaking the laws or disturbing the peace by carrying A SIX SHOOTER UNDER HIS COAT; but Charlie paid up like a man and left his pistol for safe keeping. Officer BULGER reports a conflict, wherein he suffered great discomfort. He attempted to arrest Tom WELCH, whose inclinations prompted him to object to being taken to jail. In the tussle BULGER LOST HIS COAT AND SHIRT, and suffered such rents and bruises that it will take a month's pay to repair them, but Tom WELCH went to the county jail. Deputy Marshal AGNEW was asked by a prisoner the other night while walking down Walnut street, what he would do if he (the prisoner) should knock him down and run away, to which AGNEW very modestly replied, while showing the muzzle of a revolver, "I WOULD SHOOT THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD OFF." The inquisitive prisoner went quietly to jail, where he now languisheth for that that he hath not. The serenity of the "peelers" resort was broken in upon last night by a forlorn damsel from Columbus, Kansas. Her case is a standard example of the falsity of man and the frailty of woman. She gave her name as Miss HANNAN, but said she was NEITHER WIFE MAID NOR MOTHER. The "Times" reporter found her seated, or rather squatting upon a bundle of men's apparel. Her grimy, filthy hands clasped around her knees. Her red, smutty face was crowned by a bush of matted hair, this last surmounted by a faded tawdry bonnet. Her shoulders were covered by a gaudy but very dirty shawl, and LIKE NIOBE, SHE WAS ALL TEARS. She had left her friends at Columbus, Kansas, to seek her first and only love, a stalwart youth named Dennis CONNOLLY, aged 22, with whom she said she had lived as mistress or wife for nearly two years. About three months ago Dennis left her forlorn and alone, and came to Kansas City and engaged in work hauling coal for Mr. Thos. GOLDRICK. Two days ago she came to Kansas City IN SEARCH OF HER "LOST LOVE," and brought with her as a peace offering a full suit of new clothes. She found her "Denny," but Denny did not welcome her, but got upon a "high old drunk," whereupon his former wife abstracted from him the money he had received as pay for coal delivered for his employer, who, to recover the money, had the wandering female arrested. She spent the night in the Police Court. ====================================================== (I have no connection with any of these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
