I'm not sure how the discussion went from the Jackson Co. Home to Vaile, other than that they are both historical buildings. Vaile, like many prominent buildings in Independence, was build by the Randall brothers, sons of contractor William Randall, who moved from Virginia to Missouri in 1857. William's grandson, Joseph William "Bill" Randall, served six terms as Jackson County Judge and nine terms as a U.S. Representative. Bill's maternal grandmother, Laura Elizabeth Harris, was first married to Martin Van Buren Flanery, a staunch Conferederate who only escaped being hanged on the Independence Square by the intervention of two Flanary uncles who were Union officers. Laura left the Lee's Summit area of Jackson County under Union Order No. 11 (1863) and went to Texas with her two-year-old son and her sister Julia Irwin. Martin was killed there by Union troops. Laura returned to Jackson County after the war and married Joseph Powell Bridges in 1867. The daughters of Josph and Laura married two of the above-mentioned Randall brothers. Bill Randall is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery on Noland Rd. in Independence, under a very modest gray stone. Possibly more than anyone wanted to know . . . Back in Virginia some of my Hobbs ancestors are distantly related to the Flanerys. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
