    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: burgess_researcher Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/6699.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I received this email when inquiring about jail records. Have not yet gone to research to see what they have, but here is where the records may be: Dear Ms. ?, Thank you for your interest in Jackson County, Missouri, history, and for contacting the Jackson County Historical Society about your family's connections. We apologize for the delay in our response. The interest in local history is so great that we have a continual backlog, and we try to respond meaningfully to the plethora of e-mails in our queue. The Jackson (Mo.) County Historical Society is a not-for-profit organization located on the historic courthouse square of Independence, Missouri, in the midst of a county filled with rich history. We are dedicated to the preservation and understanding of our heritage and to promoting the study, appreciation, and interpretation of local and regional history. To do this, we have for the last 60 years been collecting, preserving, and making available materials that provide a broad insight into the county's civic, social, cultural, economic, and educational development. We have and continue to gather an impressive collection on an infinite number of Jackson County-specific topics through generous donations and make these materials available to the public. Membership dues, gifts, donations, and grants are our primarily revenue sources. Contributions (including membership dues) are tax deductible. In reference to your specific query, we believe we "may" have records that have been donated and cataloged in years past about your research topic. The records of the Jackson County Jail are not complete, but we do have some lists that could be consulted. You are welcome to visit our Archives and Research Library, where we will be happy to assist you as you conduct your own research. We are located at the address below, and are available by ADVANCED APPOINTMENT Monday through Friday. Members who support the work of the Society enjoy unlimited on-site access for free. Non-member patrons are assessed a $10 fee per individual upon each visit to the Archives and Research Library. If it is not possible or convenient for you to visit, we are happy to conduct research for a fee. Our two-hour minimum generally allows us to thoroughly research most specific questions, and although we do not always have positive results, we always report fully on sources consulted and do our level best to refer patrons to other avenues of research. Fees are based on the time spent on the search, not on the results. Please refer to the steps for requesting our research assistance on the "Personalized,Historical Research" page on our web site:www.jchs.org/archives/archives.html Cordially, David W.
