William CARTER, who was arrested several days ago for stealing a ring from C. N. STAVANOW, will have a trial to-morrow. STAVANOW is a furniture manufacturer. He went into a barber shop near the corner of Twelfth street and Grand avenue and took a bath. CARTER was employed as porter and "rubber." When STAVANOW entered the room he wore a diamond ring worth $60. It was tight on his finger, but with some soap he got it off and dropped it in a pocket of his trousers which hung near; CARTER watching him. In due course of time CARTER lathered him and put a little soap in his eyes. When STAVANOW was able to open them he caught sight of the negro's hand coming away from his trousers and his ring was gone. He accused CARTER of the theft, but CARTER denied it. CARTER left the room to get a light, saying that the ring must have fallen on the floor, but strange to say it was never found and so he was arrested. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
