    3. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Monday, April 24, 1899 SMALLPOX SCARE. People living in the vicinity of Fourteenth and Lydia were treated to a smallpox scare yesterday. Dr. T. C. UNTHANK, who lives at 1416 Lydia avenue, has been attending the WILLIAMS cases in the West bottoms, and yesterday morning was taken down with the disease himself. He telephoned the City Physician COFFIN stating his condition and the police department was notified to quarantine the premises. An officer was on guard for a few hours yesterday morning, but most of the day the house was unguarded. The upper front windows to the UNTHANK house were open and a number of the neighbors, fearing the consequences, called upon Dr. COFFIN last night and asked that the place be quarantined. An officer was immediately sent to the house and a quarantine established. Dr. UNTHANK was removed to the pesthouse last night. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
