"The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Friday, December 25, 1903 AT THE GILLISS HOME. The eighty-six inmates of the Gilliss Orphan's Home at Twenty-second street and Tracy had a delightful Christmas at the home yesterday afternoon. In the parlor was a Christmas tree and Santa Claus came down the big chimney into the fireplace. As Dr. Frank NEFF, who represented St. Nicholas, stepped out into the room, the children jumped and clapped their hands and shouted, "Ha, we have caught you at last!" "Sure enough you have," returned Santa Claus as he began filling the stockings which had been hung up around the fireplace. There were dolls, toys, fruits, nuts and candy for all. The entertainment was arranged by a committee headed by Mrs. J. R. MERCER. This committee had decorated the parlor with festoons of evergreen and with holly wreathes. Each year Mrs. MERCER presents a watch to the boy whose general deportment for the year has been the highest; and the best behaved girl each Christmas gets a fully equipped work box. The prize winners yesterday were Willie VAN and Bertha WARREN. ====================================================== (I have no connection with these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo4
