I just saw this news article in my Everton's newsletter. How sad that such a fine organization is closing. I attended a meeting many, many years ago in Independence. Now that I am actively researching several branches of my family I realize how important these organizations are. I encourage everyone to join the organizations in the areas in which you are researching. Even if you cannot attend local meetings your support is important to keeping these societies going. Genealogy Society in Missouri Closes With a Thank You The Heart of America Genealogical Society of Kansas City, Missouri will be closing as of 30 June 2004. The decision was based on declining membership, the inability to get members to volunteer for leadership positions and poor attendance at Society meetings. The Society's book collection will continue to reside at Mid-Continent Public Library, North Independence Branch. The Society sends out thanks for all the support over the years.
This is a sad thing indeed... Although I am in Oregon now, I am originally from Ray County Mo. and also lived many years in the Kansas City area. I belong to many 'lists' and have been doing research on my JOY, BERRY, FORBES and allied families for over 10 years and never, until now knew that the Heart of America Gen Society existed. Could this have been a large part of their problem?? Not working at making their presence known? Although I live at a distance, I would have certainly been in close contact with them, trying to make connections with heretofore unknown relatives. So sad to lose another bunch or 'root seekers'!
