"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Thursday, December 6, 1900 SUES THE PULLMAN COMPANY. Because he was forced to sit wrapped up in a blanket for four hours on a hot morning in July, without his trousers and other articles of raiment which the laws of society compel a man to wear, Isaac RYDER wants the Pullman Palace Car company to pay him $2,000. In addition he wants the Pullman company to pay him $51 for cash and clothing stolen from him while he was a passenger on one of its cars. RYDER was a passenger on a Chicago Great Western railway train on July 8, last, bound from Kansas City to Chicago. He occupied a berth in a sleeping car. About 5 o'clock in the morning he awoke and made the discovery that he had been robbed. His trousers were missing and with them went all his cash and a few articles of less value. There were no other trousers on the train that would fit RYDER that hadn't an occupant, so he says he was compelled to sit for four long hours with nothing but a blanket to hide his person. To add to his discomfiture, the other passengers poked fun at him. They ridiculed him in every manner possible, so he alleges in a petition for damages filed in the circuit court yesterday, and the humiliation he suffered can only be imagined by a man who has had the misfortune to lose his trousers under similar circumstances. A short distance beyond Dubuque, Ia., RYDER got hold of a pair of pantaloons and then he laid aside his blanket. The plaintiff doesn't say so in his petition, but a blanket on that morning in July must have felt mighty uncomfortable. With some people it would have worked the same change as a Turkish bath. RYDER, however, doesn't state that his health was damaged in the least. He wants pay for the mental anguish he suffered and for the money and other articles stolen from his berth. Included in the list of things which he asserts were stolen from him are the following: "Cash, $27; trousers, $20; pocket knife, $1.50; suspenders, $1.50; handkerchief, $1.50." ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
